Chapter 3: Bellmore

“Because Bellmore is where this family buried its biggest secret.””

Olivia’s words landed harder than the splash had.

Nobody spoke.

Even the fountain seemed too loud.

I looked at Ethan.

“Bellmore.””

He stared at his mother.

“Mom.””

She turned on him.

“You promised me.””

“I didn't promise you anything.””

Her expression changed.

For eighteen months, I had watched Olivia control every room she entered.

This was different.

She looked afraid.

I raised the microphone again.

“What happened at Bellmore?””

Ethan shook his head.

“Clara, not here.””

I almost laughed.

He had said those words so many times.

Not here.

Not now.

Later.

When we're alone.

Except there had never been a later.

There had only been another secret waiting behind the last one.

My father moved closer.

“Who sent that message?””

“I don't know,” I said.

Ethan looked at him.

“Give me the phone.””

My father pulled it back.

“No.””

Ethan's jaw tightened.

“Mr. Morgan, you don't understand.””

My father laughed once.

“I understand perfectly.””

He looked at the soaked jacket still hanging from his shoulders.

“I came here today because my daughter asked me to stand beside her.””

His voice remained calm.

“You threw us in a pool.””

Olivia snapped, “I didn't throw anyone anywhere.””

My father looked at her.

“Your son hasn't denied it.””

Silence.

I watched Ethan.

He could have said it.

He could have stepped forward, defended his mother, defended himself, blamed the shove on an accident.

Instead, he said nothing.

Again.

I turned to Nadia.

“What is Bellmore?””

She looked toward the crowd.

“Somewhere private.””

“That doesn't answer me.””

“It was an estate.””

“Whose?””

She hesitated.

“Ethan's grandfather.””

I frowned.

“Why would that matter?””

Nadia looked at Ethan.

“Because that's where Emma was born.””

The microphone nearly slipped from my hand.

“What?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“That's not true.””

Nadia's voice shook.

“I was there.””

Olivia stepped forward.

“You were never supposed to speak about Bellmore.””

Nadia looked at her.

“Then you shouldn't have tried to destroy Clara's life.””

A few guests exchanged glances.

Someone near the cake whispered, “This is insane.””

I didn't care anymore.

“Start talking,” I said.

Nadia took a breath.

“Three years ago, Ethan told me he was going to take me to Bellmore.””

Ethan interrupted.

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

“I told you I needed time.””

“You told me your family wanted to meet me.””

Olivia's face tightened.

“That is enough.””

Nadia continued.

“When I got there, there was a woman named Mara.””

I frowned.

“Who was Mara?””

Nadia looked at Ethan.

“His father's former housekeeper.””

Ethan finally spoke.

“She was lying.””

Nadia laughed bitterly.

“She showed me the records.””

“What records?””

“Birth records.””

My heart started pounding again.

“Emma's?””

Nadia nodded.

“She wasn't registered under Ethan's name.””

I looked at Ethan.

He didn't deny that.

“Then whose name?””

Nadia's eyes dropped.

“Thomas Sterling.””

I frowned.

“Ethan's father?””

“Yes.””

A murmur swept through the guests.

Olivia spoke immediately.

“That woman forged those papers.””

Nadia shook her head.

“No.””

She opened her handbag.

“I brought copies.””

She handed one to me.

The paper was old.

Yellowed at the edges.

The name at the top was unmistakable.

*Emma Rose Sterling.*

Father: Thomas Sterling.

Mother: Nadia Brooks.

My fingers went cold.

I looked at Ethan.

“You told me your father died before you finished college.””

“He did.””

“Then how could he be listed as her father?””

Ethan said nothing.

Nadia whispered, “Because he was.””

Olivia looked furious.

“Clara, don't believe her.””

I looked at the document.

Then at her.

“Why are you so afraid of this?””

She didn't answer.

I turned toward Ethan.

“Did your father have another child?””

“No.””

Nadia said, “He had several.””

The crowd reacted all at once.

“What?”” I whispered.

Nadia shook her head.

“Not with me.””

She looked at Olivia.

“With women your family paid to disappear.””

Olivia slapped the microphone from my hand.

It hit the stone floor with a sharp crack.

“Enough!””

Security moved toward us.

My mother grabbed my wrist.

“Clara.””

I looked at Olivia.

She was breathing hard.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

I bent down and picked up the microphone.

“Then explain.””

She stared at me.

“Some things are better left in the past.””

I shook my head.

“Not when I'm about to marry into them.””

Ethan stepped between us.

“Clara, please.””

I pushed past him.

“No.””

He caught my arm.

I froze.

He released me immediately.

“I wasn't trying to hurt you.””

“You don't get to touch me right now.””

His face fell.

I turned to Nadia.

“Why were you at Bellmore?””

She looked down.

“Because Ethan asked me to meet his father.””

My heart stopped.

“Thomas knew about Emma?””

“Yes.””

“And Olivia knew?””

Nadia nodded.

“She knew before Emma was born.””

I looked at Olivia.

She seemed suddenly older.

Not softer.

Just exposed.

“How?””

Nadia took another document from her bag.

“This was in the Bellmore archives.””

I read the heading.

*Private Family Settlement Agreement.*

The words blurred.

“What does this mean?””

“It means Olivia paid me.””

My head snapped up.

“For what?””

“To disappear.””

Olivia scoffed.

“You accepted the money.””

Nadia's voice broke.

“Because you threatened to take my baby.””

A gasp came from the crowd.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked at me.

I could see the same question forming in his eyes.

I asked it.

“Did Olivia take Emma from you?””

“No.””

Nadia shook her head.

“She tried.””

My stomach twisted.

“She failed because I ran.””

Olivia hissed, “You abandoned her.””

“No.””

Nadia's eyes filled with tears.

“You told me if I spoke to anyone in the Sterling family again, your lawyers would make sure I never saw Emma.””

I looked at Ethan.

“You knew all of this?””

He whispered, “Not everything.””

I stared at him.

“That's not an answer.””

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“I knew about Emma.””

The terrace went silent again.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“You knew she existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew her mother was here.””

“Yes.””

“You knew your mother tried to make her disappear.””

He hesitated.

“That was complicated.””

I laughed.

“Complicated?””

Nadia looked at him.

“You stood outside my apartment three years ago and told me your mother had made a mistake.””

Ethan looked down.

“You told me you'd fix it.””

“I was trying.””

“You never came back.””

His eyes lifted.

“I was scared.””

Those four words hurt more than any lie.

I stared at him.

“You were scared.””

“Yes.””

“So you chose me?””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You knew the truth. You knew what your mother had done. You knew about Emma. And you chose me anyway.””

“I loved you.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“You loved what I represented.””

Olivia immediately said, “That's enough.””

I looked at her.

“No. It isn't.””

I turned toward the guests.

“Do you know what Ethan told me when I asked him why his mother hated my parents?””

Nobody answered.

“He said she was protecting him.””

I looked at my mother.

“She wasn't.””

Then I looked at Ethan.

“She was protecting the family name.””

Nadia nodded.

“And the Bellmore records.””

I frowned.

“What records?””

She hesitated.

“The original inheritance records.””

Olivia's face changed again.

I noticed.

“What inheritance?””

Nadia looked at me.

“Your grandmother's.””

My breath caught.

“My grandmother had nothing to do with them.””

Nadia shook her head.

“Your grandmother was connected to Thomas Sterling.””

My father stared.

“What are you saying?””

Nadia handed me another document.

“It was discovered after Thomas died.””

I unfolded it.

There was an old photograph clipped to the page.

My grandmother.

Standing beside a much younger Thomas Sterling.

I stared.

My grandmother had always told me she met him once at a charity event.

That was it.

Nothing more.

But the photograph showed them standing at Bellmore.

Together.

Smiling.

On the back was a handwritten date.

*September 14, 1998.*

My grandmother had never mentioned Bellmore.

I looked at Ethan.

“Why would my grandmother be there?””

He didn't answer.

Olivia did.

“Because your grandmother stole something from this family.””

My father stepped forward.

“Watch yourself.””

Olivia looked at him.

“She stole money.””

I shook my head.

“My grandmother didn't steal anything.””

Nadia said quietly, “She inherited it.””

“What?””

“Your grandmother was named in Thomas Sterling's first will.””

Olivia's face went pale.

I looked down at the document.

There it was.

A paragraph beneath his signature.

A percentage.

A property.

And a name.

*Evelyn Morgan.*

My grandmother.

I couldn't breathe.

“Why didn't I know about this?””

Nadia looked at Ethan.

“Because the Sterling family buried the will.””

Ethan whispered, “Mom…”

Olivia rounded on him.

“You promised me you'd never dig this back up.””

I stared at him.

“You knew.””

He said nothing.

“You knew my grandmother was part of this.””

Still nothing.

I stepped closer.

“And you still proposed to me?””

He looked at me, tears gathering in his eyes.

“Clara, I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“I don't know.””

“Before the wedding?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

He couldn't answer.

I felt something inside me finally snap into place.

Every strange question.

Every document Ethan wanted me to sign.

Every conversation Olivia abruptly ended.

Every time Ethan told me my family was “overreacting.””

It wasn't random.

It was a plan.

And I was the only person who hadn't been told.

I looked at Nadia.

“What was my grandmother entitled to?””

Nadia's expression changed.

She slowly pulled one last folder from her bag.

“I didn't bring this because I wanted to ruin your wedding.””

She looked at Ethan.

“I brought it because I found out Olivia had already started transferring the property.””

My heart stopped.

“Transferring it to whom?””

Nadia opened the folder.

Then she looked directly at me.

“To Ethan.””

I turned toward him.

He didn't deny it.

And that was when my father's phone rang again.

He answered.

His face changed after three seconds.

“Clara.””

“What?””

He held the phone out.

The caller was unknown.

I took it.

A man's voice came through, low and urgent.

“Miss Morgan?””

“Yes.””

“You need to leave that wedding immediately.””

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“I was at Bellmore the night your grandmother died.””

My blood ran cold.

The man inhaled.

May you like

“And I know who actually killed Thomas Sterling.””

The line went dead.
