Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew Everything

The man’s footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Slow.

Confident.

Unbothered.

As if he had not just walked into a ruined wedding carrying the weight of a lifetime of secrets.

Victoria stood completely still.

Her face had lost all color.

“Father…”

The man looked at her.

Not with anger.

Not with disappointment.

With something colder.

Disapproval.

“You should have known this day would come.””

Victoria swallowed.

“I tried to stop it.””

The man gave a faint smile.

“No.””

He looked around the ballroom.

“You tried to control it.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

For a moment, his expression changed.

Almost like recognition.

Almost like regret.

“My name is Charles Whitmore.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“And you’re Victoria’s father.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re the person who changed my records.””

Charles didn’t deny it.

That was the part that shocked everyone.

He simply stood there.

Accepting the accusation.

Robert stepped closer.

“Charles.””

The older man looked at him.

“Robert.””

The two men stared at each other like they were looking back at a war they had both survived.

“You knew this would happen,” Robert said.

Charles smiled slightly.

“I knew the truth always finds a way out.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“Stop talking like this is some kind of game.””

Charles looked at him.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

The sentence made Daniel freeze.

“What did you say?””

Charles walked closer.

“Your father had the same stubbornness.””

“My father hated people like you.””

A few guests gasped.

Charles didn’t react.

Instead, he looked at me.

And that was when I felt something strange.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like I had seen him before.

But where?

“Do you remember me?”” Charles asked.

My stomach tightened.

I stared at him.

“No.””

His expression softened.

“That’s because you were never supposed to.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Mom?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know him.””

Charles nodded.

“Of course you don’t.””

He looked toward the guests.

“This is why I came here tonight.””

Robert frowned.

“Why?””

“To finish what was started.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re going to explain everything.””

Charles looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Now.””

A small smile appeared on Charles’ face.

“You have your father’s impatience too.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“Don’t mention my father.””

“Why?””

Charles tilted his head.

“Because he was the only person who ever defeated me.””

The ballroom became silent.

I felt a chill.

Defeated him?

What did that mean?

Charles walked toward the table where the documents were scattered.

He picked up one of the old records.

“Thirty years ago, my family and Daniel’s biological family were involved in a legal battle.””

Daniel stared.

“Who was my biological father?””

Charles looked at him.

“A man named Michael Anderson.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it clearly meant something to Daniel.

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

Charles placed the document down.

“Because your father spent years searching for the same answers.””

Daniel looked at Robert.

“Is that true?””

Robert nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“So everyone knew.””

I stepped toward him.

“Daniel…”

He shook his head.

“No, Mom.””

His voice broke.

“I spent my entire life thinking I knew my family.””

He looked around the room.

“Everyone knew pieces of my story except me.””

I understood his pain.

But Charles continued.

“Your father discovered the truth after your adoption.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Why did he adopt me?””

Charles looked at me.

“Because of her.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

The entire room seemed to disappear.

Charles looked at Daniel.

“Your biological father was killed before he could protect you.””

A gasp escaped someone in the crowd.

Daniel went still.

“Killed?””

Charles nodded.

“And your mother…”

He looked at me.

“Your mother was the only person your father trusted.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

Charles continued.

“Your husband knew people were looking for that child.””

Daniel whispered:

“Me.””

“Yes.””

“And he brought me to her?””

Charles shook his head.

“No.””

The answer surprised us.

“Your father didn’t choose her.””

He looked at me.

“She chose you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Charles took a breath.

“Before you adopted Daniel, you worked at the hospital.””

My heart stopped.

I had not thought about those years in a long time.

“Yes.””

“You were a nurse.””

I nodded slowly.

Charles continued.

“You were the nurse who cared for him the night he was born.””

Daniel looked at me.

I felt tears forming.

“I didn’t know.””

Charles nodded.

“You didn’t.””

He looked at Daniel.

“You were only a baby.””

My hands began shaking.

Memories came rushing back.

The hospital.

The crying newborns.

The night shift.

A baby whose mother never came back.

A baby everyone said had no family.

But there was something I had forgotten.

Something buried beneath years of pain.

“I remember…”

Everyone looked at me.

I touched my chest.

“I remember a baby.””

Daniel stared.

“What baby?””

I looked at Charles.

“You knew.””

He nodded.

“You remembered.””

My breathing became uneven.

“There was a baby in the hospital.””

My voice became softer.

“He was alone.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“Mom…”

“I held him.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I remember singing to him because he wouldn’t stop crying.””

The ballroom was silent.

“I remember thinking someone should love him.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Was that me?””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The word came out broken.

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel looked overwhelmed.

Charles continued.

“That was why your father trusted her.””

“Because she cared for me?””

“Yes.””

“But why didn’t he tell me?””

Charles looked away.

“Because he was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

Daniel frowned.

“I was his son.””

“Yes.””

Charles’ voice softened.

“But he knew blood was not the thing that created your family.””

I looked at Daniel.

And suddenly I understood.

My husband had not hidden the truth because he was ashamed.

He hid it because he was afraid the world would try to take our son away.

Then Daniel turned toward Charles.

“What does Victoria have to do with this?””

The question changed everything.

Charles’ expression hardened.

“Victoria found out because I told her.””

Everyone looked at him.

“You used your own daughter?””

Charles didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You made her get close to me.””

“No.””

Victoria suddenly spoke.

Everyone turned.

She was crying.

“He didn’t make me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I chose you.””

Her voice shook.

“That part was real.””

Charles looked at her.

“You became emotional.””

Victoria looked at him.

“I became human.””

For the first time, Charles looked angry.

“You forgot your purpose.””

Daniel stared.

“Purpose?””

Victoria closed her eyes.

Charles answered.

“You were supposed to marry Daniel and secure an alliance.””

A wave of disgusted whispers filled the room.

Daniel looked sick.

“Alliance?””

Charles nodded.

“Your family’s company. Your name. Your future.””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“So I was a business deal.””

“No.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“You were never just that.””

“Then what was I?””

She cried.

“You were the one thing I never planned.””

The room became quiet.

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“I was supposed to use you.””

Daniel said nothing.

“But then I actually loved you.””

A tear fell down her face.

“And that ruined everything.””

Charles looked away.

As if her feelings were an inconvenience.

That was when I understood.

Victoria was not innocent.

But she had also been controlled by someone who taught her love was just another transaction.

Daniel looked at Charles.

“You destroyed my life.””

Charles calmly replied:

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I protected it.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Charles reached into his coat.

He removed one final envelope.

“This was written by your biological father.””

Daniel stared.

“Another letter?””

“Yes.””

“Why do you have it?””

Charles looked at him.

“Because I was the one who was supposed to destroy it.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“But you didn’t.””

Charles handed him the envelope.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Because after meeting your mother, I realized something.””

“What?””

Charles looked at Daniel.

“Some people are worth protecting.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

A few seconds passed.

Then he looked up.

His face was filled with disbelief.

“What?””

I whispered.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Charles.

Then back at the letter.

“My biological father knew you.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Daniel’s voice trembled.

“He wrote your name.””

I stepped closer.

“What name?””

Daniel looked down.

And when he spoke, the entire room went silent.

“He wrote…”

A pause.

“That he trusted the woman who would raise his son.””

His eyes lifted to mine.

“And he called you…”

May you like

Daniel swallowed.

“The only mother he would ever choose.””
