Chapter 2: The Envelope

Nobody moved.

The ballroom that had been filled with music, laughter, and expensive champagne suddenly felt like a courtroom.

Every eye was fixed on the envelope sitting on the table.

Victoria stared at it as if it were something dangerous.

For the first time that evening, she did not look like the confident woman who had walked down the aisle with perfect makeup and a flawless smile.

She looked scared.

“Daniel,” she said quietly, forcing a laugh that sounded nothing like her usual voice.

“What are you doing?””

My son did not answer immediately.

He kept one arm around me.

That small gesture meant more to me than any apology could have.

Because for years, I had worried that he was caught between the woman he loved and the mother who raised him.

I never wanted him to choose.

But standing there, I realized he had already chosen.

Not between us.

Between kindness and cruelty.

Between truth and a lie.

Victoria glanced around the room.

The guests were watching her now.

Not admiring her.

Questioning her.

She hated that.

She had always loved being the center of attention.

But she had never expected the attention to come like this.

“Daniel, can we please talk privately?”” she whispered.

He looked at her.

“No.””

Her expression tightened.

“Not here.””

“Yes,” he replied.

“Here.””

The word was quiet.

But it carried across the entire ballroom.

One of the older guests lowered his glass.

The wedding planner stood frozen near the stage.

Even the photographers stopped taking pictures.

Victoria looked at the envelope again.

“What exactly do you think you found?””

Daniel walked toward the table.

“You know exactly what I found.””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

I had known Victoria for almost two years.

I had watched her charm strangers.

I had watched her smile at people she needed something from.

I had watched her convince my son that she was the only person in the world who truly understood him.

But I had never seen her afraid.

Not until that moment.

Daniel picked up the envelope.

“I received this three days ago.””

Victoria swallowed.

“From who?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters.””

“No,” he said.

“What matters is what’s inside.””

He opened it.

The sound of paper unfolding seemed louder than it should have been.

I watched his eyes move across the pages.

His expression became harder with every second.

“What did you do?”” he asked.

Victoria shook her head quickly.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Daniel looked up.

“That’s interesting.””

“What?””

“Because the person who sent me this knew everything.””

Victoria’s lips pressed together.

“Someone is trying to ruin our wedding.””

“No.””

Daniel placed the papers on the table.

“Someone tried to stop me from making the biggest mistake of my life.””

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“You’re believing some random person over me?””

Daniel stared at her.

“I believed you for two years.””

The sentence hurt more than shouting would have.

Because it was true.

He had believed her.

Completely.

I remembered the first time he introduced her to me.

He had been nervous.

“Mom, I think I found someone special.””

I remembered the way Victoria held his hand.

The way she smiled.

The way she told me, “Daniel always speaks so highly of you.””

At the time, I thought I had gained a daughter.

I did not know I was meeting someone who was already planning how to remove me from my son’s life.

Daniel turned another page.

“Do you want to explain this?””

Victoria looked down.

Her confidence disappeared.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

The guests noticed.

A woman near the front whispered, “Oh my God.””

Victoria immediately turned toward her.

“Stop staring at me like I’m some criminal.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew what was happening.

Except Daniel.

And whatever was written on those pages.

“Tell them,” Daniel said.

Victoria looked back at him.

“Tell them what?””

“The truth.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Embarrassing you?””

He pointed toward me.

“My mother was slapped in front of everyone because your dress got touched by a flower.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“And you’re worried about being embarrassed?””

Victoria’s cheeks turned red.

“She ruined my wedding.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You ruined it yourself.””

A silence followed.

Then Victoria looked at me.

Not with guilt.

With anger.

“You did this.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“You.””

She pointed at me.

“You always wanted this.””

Daniel immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

Victoria ignored him.

“You wanted Daniel to leave me.””

I stared at her.

“I wanted my son to be happy.””

“Liar.””

Her voice became louder.

“You never accepted me.””

I looked at the woman standing in front of me.

The same woman who had just slapped me.

The same woman who was now trying to make herself the victim.

“Victoria,” I said softly, “I defended you when Daniel’s friends questioned your past.””

Her face changed.

I continued.

“I told him everyone deserved a chance.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What past?””

Victoria froze.

I realized immediately.

He didn’t know.

Not everything.

Just enough.

The envelope contained something bigger than I understood.

Daniel turned back to her.

“What past?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when I knew.

The woman who always had the perfect answer suddenly had none.

“Daniel,” she finally whispered, “it’s complicated.””

He laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that when the truth is bad.””

She stepped closer.

“Please listen to me.””

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice grew stronger.

“You had two years to tell me the truth.””

Victoria looked around.

The guests.

The cameras.

The flowers.

The wedding she had planned down to every detail.

Everything was falling apart in front of her.

And she knew it.

“Where did you get those documents?”” she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what you’re worried about?””

“I’m asking a question.””

“Fine.””

He lifted the paper.

“From someone who worked for your family.””

Victoria’s face went pale.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel continued.

“Someone who said they couldn’t watch another person get hurt because of your lies.””

Her breathing changed.

“Who?””

Daniel folded the papers.

“I’ll tell you.””

He looked toward the entrance of the ballroom.

Everyone followed his gaze.

The massive wooden doors were still open.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark suit.

His expression was serious.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

The man walked inside slowly.

Several guests recognized him.

Whispers spread.

“Is that…”

“Yes.””

“He worked with her father.””

Victoria’s hands began shaking.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

My son looked at her.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything.””

He looked around the ballroom.

At the decorations.

At the flowers.

At the guests.

Then at me.

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“I’m stopping myself from destroying my own life.””

The older man approached the table.

Daniel nodded.

“Mr. Harris.””

The man looked at Victoria.

“I’m sorry it came to this.””

Victoria stared at him.

“You betrayed my family.””

Mr. Harris shook his head.

“No.””

He glanced at me.

“I protected someone who deserved the truth.””

My heart tightened.

I had no idea who this man was.

Or why he looked at me with such sadness.

Daniel picked up the envelope again.

“There’s one more thing inside.””

Victoria’s eyes widened.

“What?””

He removed the final page.

Then he looked at her.

“This is the part you were hoping I would never see.””

The room became silent again.

Even Victoria stopped pretending.

“What does it say?”” someone whispered.

Daniel looked down at the paper.

Then back at the woman who was supposed to become his wife.

And the words he spoke next made Victoria’s entire world collapse.

“It says you didn’t choose me because you loved me.””

He paused.

“You chose me because of who you thought I could become.””

Victoria’s face went completely still.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

Because the final line on that page revealed something even worse.

Something connected to the woman she had just humiliated.

His mother.

And when Daniel finally read it aloud, I heard Victoria whisper one word.

“Impossible.””

May you like

Because the truth was not just about her.

It was about me.
