Chapter 2: The Videos Hidden Behind the Smile

James did not sleep.

He watched the first video three times.

Then five.

Then he stopped counting.

Every time, he hoped he had misunderstood something.

Every time, he saw the same thing.

His daughter was afraid.

The next morning, rain covered Connecticut.

Ashdown House looked different without guests.

Without music.

Without cameras.

Just a giant, silent house filled with things James suddenly hated noticing.

The expensive furniture.

The perfect decorations.

The family photographs arranged like evidence.

In every picture, Sophie smiled.

But James started seeing the details he had ignored.

Her shoulders.

Her eyes.

The way she always stood close to him but never close to Victoria.

He found Nadia in the kitchen.

She looked exhausted.

“You sent the message,” James said.

Nadia froze.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

“Yes, you do.””

Silence.

Then Nadia slowly put down the coffee cup in her hand.

“I thought she would stop.””

James stared.

“How long?””

Nadia looked toward the hallway.

“Almost a year.””

His chest tightened.

“A year?””

“She always said it was for Sophie’s confidence.””

James laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“She poured juice into my daughter’s mouth.””

Nadia looked down.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question came out louder than he intended.

Nadia flinched.

“Because every time I tried, Victoria reminded me who signed my paycheck.””

James looked away.

He hated that answer because he understood it.

Not because it was right.

Because he had created the situation where Victoria had so much control.

He had spent years building companies.

Making deals.

Solving problems.

But he had not noticed the biggest one happening inside his own home.

“Show me everything,” he said.

Nadia hesitated.

“There are more.””

The hidden folder contained dozens of videos.

Not posted.

Not edited.

Just recorded.

Some were harmless.

Most were not.

Sophie being forced to repeat answers.

Sophie being told to cry “more naturally.””

Sophie being punished for looking away from the camera.

One video stopped James completely.

Victoria sat beside Sophie in the living room.

The camera was pointed at them.

“Tell everyone what happened today.””

Sophie looked confused.

“Nothing happened.””

Victoria smiled.

“Try again.””

“I fell.””

“No.””

Sophie looked down.

“I slipped.””

Victoria sighed.

“Sophie.””

The little girl became still.

Then she repeated:

“I slipped.””

James closed his eyes.

He knew that voice.

The voice of someone trying to say the correct answer.

Not the truth.

He turned away from the screen.

“How could I not know?””

Nadia answered quietly.

“Because she made sure you saw what she wanted you to see.””

That afternoon, James confronted Victoria.

She was in the bedroom packing clothes.

Not leaving.

Just organizing.

As if nothing had happened.

“You recorded her.””

Victoria didn’t turn around.

“I recorded memories.””

“You humiliated our daughter.””

Now she looked at him.

“You’re being dramatic.””

The same words.

The same calm voice.

James felt something inside him break.

“You made her afraid of cameras.””

Victoria folded a sweater.

“She’s sensitive.””

“She said she was scared.””

“She says things when she’s overwhelmed.””

James stepped closer.

“Did you ever love her?””

The question made Victoria stop.

For a moment, her face changed.

Then she smiled.

“Of course I did.””

“Then why did you need strangers to love her more than you did?””

Victoria’s eyes hardened.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

James stared.

“You’re right.””

He picked up his phone.

“I don’t.””

A small flash of panic crossed her face.

“What did you do?””

“I copied the videos.””

“You can’t.””

“I already did.””

Victoria walked toward him.

“You’re destroying our family.””

James looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You did that when you decided our daughter was content instead of a person.””

That night, James sat beside Sophie’s hospital bed.

She was awake.

Quiet.

“Daddy?””

“I’m here.””

“Are you mad at me?””

His heart broke.

“No.””

“Because I ruined the party?””

James immediately shook his head.

“You didn’t ruin anything.””

Sophie looked at the blanket.

“Victoria said people only like me when I’m brave.””

James reached for her hand.

“You don’t have to be brave every second.””

“But if I’m not…”

She stopped.

James leaned closer.

“If you’re not?””

Sophie swallowed.

“She said you would get tired of taking care of me.””

The room went completely silent.

James felt tears burn his eyes.

“Sophie.””

He held her hand.

“I could never get tired of you.””

She looked at him.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

For the first time in months, Sophie rested against him without looking toward a camera.

But before James could feel relief, his phone rang.

It was his attorney.

The moment James answered, he knew something was wrong.

“James,” the attorney said, “you need to come home immediately.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Victoria filed for emergency custody.””

James stood.

“She did what?””

May you like

The attorney lowered his voice.

“And she claims you are the danger.””
