Chapter 9: The Evidence That Could Destroy Him

The next morning, Emily sat inside the police station with Maggie beside her.

Jace was in another room, speaking with investigators.

Thomas had barely spoken since arriving.

The revelation about Rachel had opened an old wound none of them knew how to touch.

Emily stared at a photograph on the detective's desk.

It showed Daniel Miller's damaged motorcycle.

“What exactly happened that night?”” she asked.

Detective Lawson folded his hands.

“We're reviewing the original case records. But based on what we've heard, your mother may have witnessed a vehicle leaving the scene.””

“Why didn't she tell anyone?””

“She did provide a statement. We have a copy.””

Emily looked up.

“Then why wasn't Victor arrested?””

The detective hesitated.

“Because the evidence wasn't strong enough at the time. The vehicle was never recovered, and the witness couldn't positively identify the driver.””

Emily's stomach tightened.

“Was my mother threatened?””

“We're investigating that possibility.””

Across the hallway, Jace emerged.

His expression was unreadable.

“Emily, we found something.””

He handed her a photograph.

It showed a red metal toolbox.

The same one her mother had mentioned.

“Where is it?””

“Still at the garage. The police are arranging a warrant.””

Emily stared at him.

“Will the recording be there?””

“We don't know.””

Thomas approached.

“Rachel hid it beneath the bottom tray. You have to lift the metal divider.””

Jace looked at him.

“You're sure?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you retrieve it years ago?””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid of what it would prove.””

Jace turned away.

Emily understood something then.

Her father had not simply been absent.

He had spent years allowing fear to make decisions for him.

And now, everyone was paying for it.

At eleven that morning, the police arrived at the old garage.

Emily remained at the station with Maggie.

Jace went with the investigators because he knew the property and could identify the toolbox.

Thomas stayed behind.

He paced the waiting room.

Every few minutes, he checked his phone.

Finally, Emily spoke.

“Dad, sit down.””

He looked at her.

“Sorry.””

He sat.

For a while, neither said anything.

Then Emily asked, “Did Mom ever hate you?””

Thomas stared at his hands.

“I don't know.””

“She kept your birthday cards.””

His eyes filled.

“She did?””

Emily nodded.

“She kept every one.””

Thomas covered his face.

“I don't deserve that.””

Emily looked toward the window.

“Maybe not.””

He lowered his hands.

“I know you don't trust me.””

“I don't.””

He nodded.

“But I want you to know something. I'm not asking you to forgive me because your mother loved me. I'm not asking you to pretend I didn't abandon you.””

Emily turned toward him.

“Then what are you asking?””

“For a chance to tell you the truth. And maybe, if I earn it, a chance to be part of your life.””

She studied him.

“I'm sixteen. I have university coming up. I have a job to find. I don't need someone making promises.””

Thomas nodded.

“Then I won't make any.””

Emily looked at him for a long moment.

“Good.””

His phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Emily asked.

Thomas turned the phone around.

A message from Victor.

You should have stayed away from your daughter.

Then another.

The police won't protect you forever.

Emily immediately called Detective Lawson.

Thomas handed over the phone.

The detective read the messages and frowned.

“This is useful. Don't delete anything.””

At 12:40, Jace called.

“Emily?””

She stood.

“Did you find it?””

There was a pause.

Then Jace said, “Yes.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“Oh, thank God.””

“The toolbox was there. The bottom compartment was still sealed.””

“Is the recording okay?””

“Looks like it. The investigators have it.””

Thomas stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

“What did it say?””

Jace's voice became quieter.

“Emily, you need to hear this from the detective. But the recording confirms Victor threatened Rachel and Thomas.””

Thomas covered his mouth.

Jace continued.

“And there's more.””

“What?””

“Rachel mentioned Daniel.””

Emily looked at her father.

“What did she say?””

Jace was silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

“She told Victor she had evidence that he deliberately followed Daniel that night.””

Thomas sat down.

Emily felt cold.

“Followed him?””

“That's what the recording suggests.””

Jace continued.

“Victor threatened her. He told her that if she went to the police, he'd make sure nobody believed her.””

Emily began crying.

Her mother had carried that secret alone.

She had raised Emily, worked exhausting shifts, fought cancer, and protected her daughter while knowing a dangerous man might still be watching.

“Jace?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you okay?””

He didn't answer.

Then she heard him breathe.

“No, kid. I'm not.””

Two hours later, Detective Lawson entered the waiting room.

He carried a folder.

“We've listened to the recording. It's authentic, and it provides significant evidence.””

Thomas stood.

“Can you arrest Victor?””

“We have enough to seek additional warrants and pursue several charges. We also found financial records in the toolbox that match the notebook.””

Emily looked at him.

“What happens now?””

“We'll need statements from everyone involved. We'll also investigate the original accident involving Daniel Miller.””

Jace entered behind him.

His face was pale.

Emily approached.

“Did you hear it?””

He nodded.

“Yeah.””

“What did your brother have to do with Victor?””

Jace swallowed.

“Daniel was planning to testify about the illegal operation. Victor found out.””

Emily felt sick.

“And the accident?””

Jace looked at the floor.

“The recording doesn't prove Victor caused the crash. But it establishes that he followed Daniel and threatened him shortly before it happened.””

Thomas spoke quietly.

“That's what Rachel suspected.””

Jace closed his eyes.

For eleven years, he had believed his brother's death was a terrible accident.

Now there was a possibility that it had been something far worse.

Emily stepped closer.

“I'm sorry.””

Jace nodded.

“Thank you.””

Then Detective Lawson placed another document on the table.

“We also found something else in the toolbox.””

Thomas looked at it.

“What?””

“A sealed envelope addressed to Jace Miller.””

Jace took it.

The handwriting on the front was unfamiliar.

He opened it.

Inside was a letter and a small photograph.

The photograph showed Daniel standing beside a motorcycle.

On the back was a date.

The day he died.

Jace unfolded the letter.

He read the first line.

Then his face changed.

“What is it?”” Emily whispered.

Jace looked at Thomas.

“You knew?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I swear I didn't.””

Jace read the next paragraph silently.

His hands began trembling.

Finally, he turned the letter toward Emily.

The first sentence was written in Daniel's handwriting.

Jace, if anything happens to me, don't believe Victor's story about the accident.

Beneath it was another sentence.

The person who knows the truth is the one who drove me home that night.

Jace stared at the photograph.

Emily looked between them.

“Who drove him home?””

Thomas's face had gone completely white.

Then he whispered a name.

“Rachel.””

Emily's breath stopped.

Her mother had been the last person to see Daniel alive.

And the letter suggested she knew something nobody had ever told Jace.

Before anyone could speak, Detective Lawson's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression hardened.

“Where?””

A pause.

“Understood. Send the units.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” Jace demanded.

The detective looked at them.

“Victor Hale has disappeared.””

May you like

Then he turned toward Emily.

“And someone just broke into your apartment.””
