Chapter 7: The Signature That Destroyed My Family

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The ballroom music continued behind us, cheerful and completely unaware that a family secret was unraveling in the hallway.

Detective Helen Brooks held the document beneath the bright ceiling lights.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “I'm going to ask you again. Did you authorize the transfer of Elena Carter's final design collection four days before her death?””

My father stared at the paper.

“I don't remember signing that.””

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Oh, please. Don't start pretending you have amnesia.””

Dad turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

“You signed dozens of documents during that period. You knew exactly what you were doing.””

“I signed paperwork you put in front of me!””

The words echoed down the hallway.

Brianna looked between them, her hands clutching the skirt of my dress.

“Mom, what's he talking about?””

Vanessa ignored her.

Detective Brooks stepped closer to my father.

“Mr. Carter, this document authorizes the transfer of rights to a private company called V.C. Creative Holdings. The company subsequently licensed several designs that appear to belong to your late wife.””

Dad shook his head.

“I thought those documents were related to medical expenses.””

“Then why does the agreement refer to intellectual property?””

“I don't know!””

“Did you read what you signed?””

He looked away.

“No.””

Detective Brooks made a note.

“That may be relevant to the investigation, but it doesn't resolve the question of authorization.””

I watched my father struggle to find words.

For years, he had been the man who always told me to calm down, stop asking questions, and avoid making family problems worse.

Now, surrounded by witnesses, he was finally facing the consequences of his silence.

And I couldn't bring myself to feel sorry for him.

Vivienne Laurent held the photograph of the original agreement.

“There's something else,” she said.

Everyone turned toward her.

She pointed to a paragraph near the bottom.

“This document claims Elena voluntarily surrendered the collection in exchange for a settlement. But I was present when she negotiated the original agreement. She refused to surrender ownership under any circumstances.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“People change their minds.””

“Of course they do,” Vivienne replied.

“But Elena's signature is missing from this document.””

Detective Brooks examined it.

“That's correct. Only Mr. Carter's signature appears on the authorization page.””

“So how could he transfer rights that didn't belong to him?”” I asked.

Margaret Shaw, the event director, answered carefully.

“Depending on the agreements involved, he may not have had the authority to do so. That's something the investigators will need to establish.””

Vanessa looked at me with open hatred.

“You've ruined everything.””

I stared at her.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“You dragged private matters into public.””

“You stole my mother's work.””

“Watch your mouth!””

“Why? Are you going to slap me again?””

Her hand twitched.

Detective Brooks immediately stepped between us.

“Mrs. Carter, I strongly advise you to remain calm.””

Vanessa lowered her arm, but her expression remained vicious.

“You think these people care about you? They're using you to protect their company. Once they get what they want, they'll disappear, and you'll be left with nothing.””

Vivienne's voice became cold.

“Mrs. Carter, I spent six years trying to discover what happened to Elena's work. I have no intention of abandoning her daughter now.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Then tell us why you waited six years.””

The question caught Vivienne off guard.

For the first time, I saw uncertainty in her eyes.

Detective Brooks closed her folder.

“We will continue this discussion at the station. For now, I need everyone to preserve any documents, messages, and financial records connected to this matter.””

“Am I under arrest?”” Vanessa demanded.

“Not at this time.””

“Then I'm leaving.””

“You're free to leave, but I strongly recommend that you cooperate with our investigation.””

Vanessa grabbed Brianna's arm.

“Come on.””

Brianna didn't move.

She was still staring at the embroidery inside my dress.

“Mom,” she whispered, “you said it was yours.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Not here.””

“You told me it was a sample from your company.””

“Brianna, shut up.””

“You said nobody could prove where it came from!””

The hallway fell silent again.

My stomach tightened.

Brianna's words had revealed more than she realized.

Detective Brooks turned toward her.

“Miss Carter, would you be willing to explain what your mother told you about the gown?””

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know it was stolen.””

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

“Don't say another word.””

Brianna pulled away.

“You told me Nia had copied one of your designs! You said she was trying to embarrass us because she was jealous of my competition.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“You knew about my dress before the paint incident,” I said.

Brianna looked at me.

For once, she had no clever response.

“I saw the sketches,” she whispered.

“Mom said the design looked familiar. She told me to get close to you and find out how much you knew.””

My heart began pounding.

“What?””

“She said your mother had left something valuable behind. She thought you might have found the original drawings.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone perfectly still.

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

“Mom told me to make you angry enough to show us your sketchbooks. When the paint didn't make you give them up, she said we needed another plan.””

I remembered the slap.

The missing dress.

The threats.

All of it.

“You weren't just trying to ruin my graduation,” I whispered.

“You were looking for the original design.””

Brianna nodded.

“Mom said there was a hidden signature that could prove who owned the collection. She wanted to find it before anyone else did.””

Detective Brooks exchanged a glance with her colleague.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said, “I think we need to speak privately.””

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

“You ungrateful little liar!””

Brianna recoiled.

“You told me to wear the dress!””

“I told you to compete!””

“You said it was safe!””

Vanessa lunged toward her daughter, but the detective stepped between them.

“That's enough.””

For the first time in my life, Vanessa had no control over the room.

No one rushed to defend her.

No one accepted her explanation.

Even Brianna had turned against her.

I should have felt triumphant.

Instead, I felt exhausted.

I wanted my mother.

I wanted to sit beside her sewing machine and hear her laugh. I wanted to tell her about the dress, the competition, and the strange way a few stitches had brought her back into my life.

But she wasn't there.

And no investigation could change that.

Vivienne touched my shoulder gently.

“Nia, there's something I need to tell you before you make any decisions.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She glanced at the detective, then lowered her voice.

“Your mother didn't lose the collection simply because someone transferred the documents. She discovered the theft before she died, and she came to me for help.””

“Did you help her?””

“I tried. But I made a terrible mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Vivienne's eyes filled with tears.

“I believed someone I should never have trusted.””

She looked toward Vanessa.

Then toward my father.

And finally, she whispered a name.

“Marcus Carter.””

My breath caught.

Vivienne continued.

“Your father was the person who introduced Elena to the lawyer handling the transfer. He assured us the paperwork was legitimate.””

I turned toward Dad.

He shook his head desperately.

“I didn't know what she was planning!””

Vivienne looked at him.

“Then explain why Elena's final letter accused you of betraying her trust.””

Dad's face crumpled.

Before he could answer, Detective Brooks returned with a new document.

“We've received confirmation from the financial investigation team,” she announced.

“The company connected to these transfers received substantial payments from international fashion retailers.””

She paused.

“But the most recent payment was made only three weeks ago.””

My eyes widened.

Three weeks ago.

That was when Vanessa had started ordering expensive furniture, buying Brianna designer accessories, and boasting that our family was about to enter a new chapter.

Detective Brooks looked directly at Vanessa.

“The payments are still active. And the account records indicate that the next transfer is scheduled for tomorrow morning.””

Vanessa stopped breathing for a moment.

Dad whispered, “How much?””

The detective glanced at the report.

“Four million dollars.””

Vivienne gripped the edge of the table.

“That amount would correspond to the international licensing agreement for the Blue Horizon collection.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She had spent years telling me my mother's work was worthless.

Now four million dollars was about to change hands because of it.

And suddenly, I understood why she had been willing to destroy me to protect her secret.

But there was something nobody in that hallway knew.

My mother had left one final condition in her original agreement.

A condition that could stop the transfer completely.

And the only person who knew where to find it was the man who had just betrayed her.

My father.
