Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Twelve Million
I couldn't move.
Arthur held the birth record as though it weighed more than the entire world.
“My biological father is alive?”” I repeated.
Dr. Vale sank into a chair.
“Please,” she whispered.
“You need to hear the whole story before you decide what to believe.””
Outside, Marcus was still approaching the house.
Detective Reed signaled to his partner, who moved toward the front entrance. Another officer went to secure the back door.
Arthur laid the document on the desk.
“Your birth certificate was altered six years ago,” he explained.
“The original record names a different man as your father. Daniel Carter knew the truth, but he never told you because he believed the identity of your biological father would put you in danger.””
I looked at the name.
*Richard Hale.*
Patricia's husband.
Marcus's father.
For a moment, the room seemed to shrink around me.
“No,” I whispered.
Dr. Vale nodded miserably.
“Richard was involved with Isabella before she became pregnant. He promised to leave Patricia, but when she discovered the affair, she threatened to destroy him financially and expose his business dealings.””
Isabella stared at the floor.
“I thought he would protect us,” she said.
“I was wrong.””
“Why didn't he claim me?””
“Because Patricia told him that if he acknowledged you, she'd make sure neither you nor Isabella would survive long enough to benefit from the Hale estate.””
My hands shook.
“So Marcus is my half-brother?””
“No,” Dr. Vale said softly.
“You're his half-sister.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
I thought of Marcus kissing me in the rain outside my apartment. His hand on my back at family dinners. The engagement ring he'd slipped onto my finger beneath a canopy of white roses.
I remembered Patricia smiling when she called me the daughter she'd always wanted.
They had known.
Perhaps not every detail, but enough.
“Did Marcus know?”” I asked.
Dr. Vale hesitated.
“Richard told him the truth when he was nineteen.””
I felt sick.
“He knew I was his sister when he started dating me?””
“Yes.””
A sound escaped my throat, half laugh and half sob.
“He spent four years pretending to love me.””
Arthur's expression hardened.
“Marcus may have intended to use the marriage to gain access to the trust and conceal his father's financial crimes. But we still need evidence of his specific actions.””
I turned toward the window.
Marcus was standing outside with two police officers between him and the door. He was speaking rapidly, pointing toward the house and holding up his document.
I could barely recognize him.
“What about the twelve million dollars?””
Dr. Vale opened a locked drawer and removed a thick ledger.
“Richard established a private foundation years ago. He used it to hide money from his business partners and from Patricia. When Daniel discovered the scheme, Richard transferred several assets into a protected trust.””
“Why would my father control it?””
“Because he was the only person Richard trusted to keep the money away from Patricia. Daniel was supposed to manage the assets until you reached adulthood.””
I stared at the ledger.
“Why would Richard leave me money if he never wanted to acknowledge me?””
“He didn't want to acknowledge you publicly,” Dr. Vale said.
“But he wanted you protected. He knew Patricia would try to take control of the money if she learned you existed.””
“And Marcus?””
“Marcus was supposed to receive the family business. But when Richard learned that his son was helping Patricia conceal the fraud, he changed the terms of the trust.””
Arthur turned a page in the ledger.
“Which means the twelve million dollars may be only a fraction of the assets.””
“How much is there?””
Dr. Vale looked at me.
“Approximately forty-eight million.””
I sat down.
Forty-eight million dollars.
My father had lived in a small house, repaired watches, and driven an old sedan while protecting a fortune he never told me about.
And the man I had planned to marry had spent four years trying to steal it.
“Where is Richard now?”” I asked.
Dr. Vale shook her head.
“He disappeared six months ago.””
“Disappeared?””
“His private plane left for Canada. The flight plan listed a destination, but no verified arrival was recorded. Patricia told the family he had gone into hiding because of a business dispute.””
I looked at the birth record again.
“So the bank transfer was made using his identity.””
“Someone has access to his digital certificate,” Arthur said.
“If Richard is alive, he may have authorized it. If he's dead, someone is impersonating him.””
Detective Reed returned from the front door.
“Marcus is claiming he came here to collect stolen medical records. He's refusing to answer questions until his attorney arrives.””
“Can he enter the house?”” I asked.
“Not without a warrant or consent. Dr. Vale has agreed to cooperate with us.””
A sudden crash sounded outside.
We all turned.
Marcus had struck the hood of the police vehicle with his fist.
“Ask her about the night Isabella disappeared!”” he shouted through the window.
“Ask her what she did with the baby!””
Detective Reed stepped outside and ordered him to calm down.
Marcus pointed at me.
“Nia! Your mother knows the truth!””
I looked at Isabella.
She was trembling.
“What is he talking about?””
She pressed both hands to her face.
“There's something I didn't tell you.””
I waited.
“After you were born, Patricia came to the hospital. She told me Richard had arranged for you to be placed with a family who would raise you safely. She said I would be able to see you when the danger passed.””
“You believed her?””
“I was recovering from surgery. I was frightened, and I had no money. Daniel told me he would take care of you temporarily.””
“Then why did he never bring you to see me?””
“Because Patricia threatened to expose the affair and accuse me of kidnapping you. She had documents prepared. If I fought her, she would have taken you into the family court system, where Richard's money and influence could have buried me.””
I stared at her.
“You let me grow up believing you were dead.””
“I thought you were safer.””
The same words again.
I stood.
“I need a moment.””
I walked into the hallway and leaned against the wall. My whole life had been a maze of decisions made by people who claimed to love me.
They had chosen what I could know, who I could trust, and which truths I was allowed to hear.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number.
Richard Hale is alive. He has been watching you since the engagement.
A second message followed.
Ask Arthur why he accepted money from him.
I turned back toward the study.
Arthur was speaking quietly with Detective Reed. When he saw my face, he stopped.
I held up my phone.
“Did Richard Hale pay you?””
Arthur went completely still.
Dr. Vale closed her eyes.
Isabella whispered, “Oh, no.””
Arthur slowly removed his glasses.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How much?””
“Two hundred thousand dollars.””
“For what?””
“To protect the trust records and make sure they reached you if something happened to Daniel.””
I stared at him.
“You accepted money from my biological father and never told me he existed?””
“Richard paid me through an intermediary. I didn't know who the client was until after Daniel's death.””
“Did you know he was alive?””
Arthur hesitated.
“Six months ago, I received a letter from someone claiming to be Richard. It contained information only he could have known.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I couldn't verify whether it was genuine.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone has an excuse.””
Arthur looked genuinely ashamed.
“I know.””
Outside, Marcus's lawyer had arrived. Detective Reed was speaking with him near the police vehicle.
Then a second car pulled into the driveway.
An older black sedan.
The rear door opened.
A man stepped out, leaning heavily on a silver cane. He had white hair, a lined face, and the same green eyes I saw every morning in the mirror.
I knew who he was before anyone spoke.
Richard Hale.
My biological father.
He walked toward the house while two men in plain clothes followed several steps behind him.
Detective Reed moved to intercept him, but Richard raised one hand.
“I came to surrender,” he said.
His voice carried through the open doorway.
“I'm prepared to testify against my wife, my son, and every person involved in the fraud.””
I stepped outside.
Richard stopped when he saw me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he lowered his eyes.
“I don't expect you to call me Father.””
“Good.””
His mouth tightened.
“I have spent twenty-six years regretting what I did.””
“Regret didn't stop you from letting me grow up without knowing you.””
“No.””
“Regret didn't stop your wife from threatening my mother.””
“No.””
“And regret didn't stop your son from trying to marry me.””
Richard's face twisted with pain.
“I know.””
I looked at the man who had given me life and then surrendered every chance to be part of it.
“Why are you here now?””
He reached into his coat and produced a small black envelope.
“Because your father left you one final message. Daniel made me promise to deliver it if Marcus ever attempted to access the trust.””
I took the envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel Carter standing beside Richard outside the watch shop.
On the back, my father had written:
If Richard returns, listen to what he says. But trust the evidence, not the man.
I looked up.
Richard was crying.
Then he said, “Nia, there's something about Daniel's death that nobody has told you.””
May you like
He glanced toward the house.
“Your father wasn't the only person in that car.””
