Chapter 6: The Confession Behind the Locked Door
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood rushing through my ears.
“Poisoned?”” I repeated.
Ethan nodded.
“Your father was scheduled for a routine medical examination the morning he died. By then, he was already seriously ill. The doctors believed it was a sudden cardiac event.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
He shook his head slowly.
“No. Richard's death certificate listed natural causes. I never had evidence suggesting otherwise.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Ethan is lying.””
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“Of course you'd say that. You've spent your entire life cleaning up your father's messes.””
“Shut your mouth.””
“Why? Afraid she'll hear the truth?””
Marcus moved toward him, but Daniel stepped between them.
“Enough. If either of you has evidence of a crime, we need to involve the authorities.””
Ethan pointed at the ledger.
“The evidence is there. Your father transferred money to Arthur's companies, and Arthur used it to purchase control over the property rights. When Richard discovered the full scheme, he threatened to expose them.””
I stared at the older man.
“And you helped Arthur?””
“I signed documents I didn't understand. I believed him when he said the transfers were temporary.””
“That's convenient.””
His expression tightened.
“I was twenty-six years old. Arthur had promised me a future with the company. By the time I understood what he was doing, the money was gone, and your father suspected me.””
“Why didn't you tell him the truth?””
“I tried.””
Ethan looked down at his hands.
“He wouldn't listen. He thought I'd betrayed him.””
Mom's voice trembled.
“Richard trusted you like a son.””
“I know.””
“And you left us alone with all this?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I thought Arthur would come after me if I stayed. Then Richard died, and I was afraid I'd be blamed for everything.””
“So you disappeared,” I said.
“Yes.””
He didn't make excuses.
That made his confession harder to dismiss.
Marcus suddenly laughed.
It was a cold, sharp sound.
“This is ridiculous. You're going to believe a man who abandoned his own family over me?””
I turned toward him.
“Then explain why your father was the last person alone with mine.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“My father visited Richard that night. They argued about money. That's all.””
“Did your father have access to his medication?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you know about the property transfer before you proposed to me?””
He hesitated.
It was brief, but unmistakable.
“Yes,” he admitted.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
“Before we met.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
Before we met.
I thought of our first date, when he had asked about my childhood home. I remembered him smiling as I described the backyard where my father had taught me to ride a bicycle.
He had seemed interested because he wanted to know me.
Perhaps he had been studying the property.
“You approached me because of my family,” I whispered.
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
“At first, I wanted to understand what my father had been trying to recover. But then I fell in love with you.””
“Don't.””
“Nia, I swear—”
“Don't you dare tell me you loved me as though that excuses any of this.””
His voice rose.
“I was trying to protect my family!””
“By stealing my mother's house?””
“Your mother signed the document!””
Mom flinched.
I stepped toward him.
“After you lied to her.””
Marcus's eyes flashed.
“You think your father was innocent? He hid money, manipulated contracts, and left everyone else to clean up the consequences. You don't even know what he did.””
Ethan slammed his hand against the table.
“Richard moved the money because Arthur was going to steal it all.””
“That's your version,” Marcus snapped.
“Because I was there!””
“And you ran away!””
The two men stared at each other.
Then Marcus reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
He placed it on the table.
“Here. You want the truth? Look at this.””
Daniel opened the paper.
It was a copy of an old medical report bearing my father's name. Several lines were highlighted, including a notation about an abnormal substance detected in a blood sample collected shortly before his death.
Daniel's face changed.
“Where did you get this?””
“From my father's files.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You knew?””
“I found it last year.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I didn't know what it meant. I thought Ethan was trying to frame my father.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Arthur destroyed the original report. I found this copy in an old company archive.””
Daniel examined the document.
“This needs to be verified. A photocopy alone cannot establish poisoning, much less identify a perpetrator.””
Marcus seized on that.
“Exactly. There's no proof my father did anything.””
I stared at him.
“Then why did you hide the report?””
He didn't answer.
The silence was enough.
Daniel carefully placed the medical report beside the ledger.
“We need to preserve these documents and contact the appropriate authorities. Nobody leaves with the originals until we have a clear record of what is here.””
Marcus's expression changed.
“You can't keep me here.””
“No one's keeping you anywhere,” Daniel replied.
“But if you interfere with these records, I'll document it.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Nia, please. Think about us.””
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“You kissed Vanessa in my mother's house. You manipulated my mother into signing a legal document. You planned to acquire the property before our wedding. And now you're asking me to think about us?””
He stepped closer.
“I made mistakes.””
“You made choices.””
He looked toward the door.
Then he said something that made my stomach turn.
“Vanessa wasn't supposed to cut your mother's hair.””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus swallowed.
“The plan was to make Evelyn leave the hotel in distress. Vanessa was supposed to create a disagreement, make her feel unwelcome, and convince her to go home.””
My mother's hand flew to her mouth.
“Why?””
“Because I needed her away from the wedding. I needed you distracted while the property documents were finalized.””
I stared at him.
“You arranged the humiliation?””
“I didn't tell Vanessa to cut her hair. She went too far.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“You expected us to believe this was an accident?””
Marcus snapped.
“I expected Vanessa to follow instructions!””
The words echoed through the vault room.
For the first time, he looked as though he understood what he'd admitted.
I felt sick.
My mother had spent months preparing for my wedding. She had bought her dress, booked a hair appointment, and practiced her little speech about how proud she was of me.
Marcus had known all along that he wanted her out of the way.
He had never planned to protect her.
He had planned to use her.
I reached for my phone.
Marcus grabbed my wrist.
“Don't call anyone.””
I looked down at his hand.
“Let go.””
“Nia, please. If the police get involved, my father will destroy everything.””
I pulled free.
“Then perhaps he should have thought of that before he destroyed our lives.””
Daniel moved toward the door to summon the bank manager.
Ethan remained beside the table, watching Marcus with a strange mixture of anger and sorrow.
Then my phone rang.
The unknown number.
I answered on speaker.
A woman's voice came through, breathless and terrified.
“Nia? My name is Claire. I worked for your father's company.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Claire Matthews?””
“Yes. I found the original ledger pages.””
Ethan went completely still.
Marcus's face lost all color.
Claire continued.
“I know who moved the money, and I know what happened the night Richard died.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who killed my father?””
There was a pause.
Then Claire whispered, “It wasn't Arthur Vance.””
I looked at Marcus.
He was staring at the phone as if it were a loaded gun.
Claire's voice broke.
“It was someone your father loved enough to let into his home.””
The call ended.

A second later, a message appeared.
*I have the proof. Meet me alone tonight, or your mother will be the next person they silence.*
