Chapter 8: The Two Voices That Changed Everything
Daniel raised his champagne glass a little higher.
"Sometimes, you have to leave the wrong woman to find the right one.""
A few guests shifted in their seats.
His friend Michael stared at his shoes. Rachel pressed her lips together. Margaret, Daniel's mother, reached for her own glass as if the toast were perfectly ordinary.
Vanessa stood beside him, her hand resting on her stomach.
I watched her face.
She wasn't smiling anymore.
Daniel continued.
"To the woman who finally made me a father.""
Several people lifted their glasses.
I saw one of Vanessa's friends hesitate, then lower hers again.
That small gesture gave me more comfort than I expected.
Not everyone believed him.
I placed my glass on the nearest table and turned toward the hallway.
I had promised myself I wouldn't create a scene.
I had promised Anna I wouldn't expose Lily's private life.
I had promised Megan that I wouldn't let Daniel drag me into another argument about my worth.
So I walked away.
Then I heard the door open behind me.
A woman's voice called out.
"Excuse me. I'm looking for Daniel Bennett.""
I stopped.
I recognized the voice before I turned around.
Anna stood in the doorway, wearing a dark green coat. Beside her was a woman in a gray suit carrying a leather folder.
Anna wasn't holding Lily's hand.
That was a relief.
She had kept her daughter away from the room.
Daniel turned toward the entrance.
His smile vanished.
"Anna?""
The woman in the gray suit stepped forward.
"My name is Melissa Cole. I'm here because my client has asked me to deliver a formal notice concerning the unauthorized use of her identity in connection with a proposed guardianship arrangement.""
The room went so quiet I could hear the faint hum of the air conditioner.
Daniel stared at her.
"This is a private family event.""
"Then you should have kept your private legal matters out of your public speech.""
His face reddened.
"Who invited you?""
Anna answered before the attorney could.
"I did.""
Daniel set his glass down.
"Anna, we discussed this. You agreed that we would handle everything privately.""
"No," Anna said.
"You told me you would stop contacting my family.""
"I was trying to help you.""
"You were trying to make me look like a bad mother.""
Several guests exchanged glances.
Daniel laughed, but there was no warmth in it.
"This is ridiculous. You were struggling. I offered assistance. That's all.""
Anna's hands trembled, but she didn't look away.
"You told me your wife had agreed to become Lily's guardian. You told me you could provide a stable home because your marriage was strong.""
Daniel's eyes flashed toward me.
"Claire had nothing to do with this.""
"Exactly," I said.
He looked at me as though he wanted to silence me with a glance.
I stepped away from the hallway and returned to the room.
"That's the point, Daniel. I had nothing to do with it. You never asked me.
You never told me. But you've spent four years telling people that I was too unstable to be part of a family.""
Margaret stood abruptly.
"This is not the place for this conversation.""
I turned toward her.
"You knew about Lily, didn't you?""
Her face went pale.
"Claire, please.""
"Did you know?""
She looked at Daniel.
That was all the answer I needed.
A murmur spread through the room.
Daniel moved toward me.
"You're making accusations you can't prove.""
Melissa opened her folder.
"Actually, Mr. Bennett, the records establish that Mrs. Bennett was not listed as a participant in the proposed arrangement and did not sign the consent documents you referenced in your correspondence.""
Daniel stared at the papers.
"Those records are confidential.""
"Which is why I will not discuss the child's protected information in this room. But I will make one thing clear: any claim that Claire Bennett consented to become a guardian is unsupported by the documents we have reviewed.""
Michael stepped forward.
"Daniel, what is she talking about?""
"Nothing," Daniel snapped.
"This is an attempt to embarrass me.""
Rachel rose from her chair.
"No, Daniel. It's an attempt to tell the truth.""
He spun toward her.
"Stay out of this.""
"I should have said something four years ago," Rachel replied.
"I knew you were talking about Lily. I knew Claire had never agreed to anything. And I let you tell everyone that the arrangement fell apart because Claire was too fragile.""
Daniel's mouth opened, then closed.
Rachel wiped her cheeks.
"I'm sorry, Claire.""
For a moment, the room seemed to tilt around me.
An apology.
Not enough to undo four years of lies, but the first honest thing I had heard from someone in Daniel's family.
Vanessa stepped away from Daniel.
"Did you tell me the truth about any of this?"" she asked.
He turned toward her.
"Vanessa, don't do this.""
"Did you tell me Claire had agreed to the guardianship?""
He hesitated.
Vanessa's face changed.
"Oh, my God.""
"I was trying to explain a complicated situation.""
"No," she said.
"You told me a story because you wanted me to believe you were the victim.""
He reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
"Don't touch me.""
A guest near the back quietly set down her drink.
Another woman whispered something to her husband.
Daniel looked around the room, and for the first time, he seemed to understand that he was losing control of the audience he had worked so hard to impress.
Then he did something I hadn't expected.
He pointed at me.
"Fine. You want the truth? Claire and I were never going to have a family.
I tried to find another way. I tried to help that little girl, and everyone treated me like a criminal for it.""
I stared at him.
"You weren't a criminal for wanting to help a child. You were wrong for pretending I had agreed to something I never knew about. You were wrong for pressuring her mother. And you were wrong for using both of us to make yourself look like a hero.""
He shook his head.
"You don't understand what it was like.""
"Then you should have told the truth.""
"I was ashamed!""
The admission burst out of him.
For a second, nobody moved.
Daniel looked at Vanessa, then at his mother, then at me.
His voice dropped.
"I didn't know whether I could have children. I couldn't stand the thought of being the man who failed at the one thing I wanted most.""
I felt an old sadness stir inside me.
There it was.
The fear he had hidden beneath his anger.
The insecurity he had turned into cruelty.
But understanding why he had behaved that way did not make the damage disappear.
"You weren't the only one who was afraid," I said.
"I was afraid every month. I was afraid every time I took an injection. I was afraid that you would stop loving me if I couldn't give you a child.""
He looked away.
"And you made that fear come true," I continued.
"Not because you couldn't become a father, Daniel. Because you decided that my pain made me less worthy of being your wife.""
His eyes filled.
For the first time, I didn't feel responsible for comforting him.
Vanessa took off her engagement ring.
She held it in her palm for several seconds before placing it on the gift table.
"I can't do this," she said.
Daniel stared at the ring.
"Vanessa, we're having a baby.""
"Yes. And that baby deserves better than watching us build a family on lies.""
She walked toward the hallway.
Margaret followed her, calling her name.
Nobody stopped Anna.
Nobody stopped Melissa.
And nobody looked at me with the same certainty they had carried when Daniel raised his glass.
I thought it was over.
Then Daniel spoke again.
"Claire.""
I turned.
His face was pale.
"There's something else you don't know.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
He looked toward the entrance, where Anna was standing with her arms folded tightly across her chest.
Then he looked back at me.
"Lily wasn't the only reason I went to that agency.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"What are you talking about?""
Daniel swallowed.
"The woman who first contacted me about Lily knew something about you. Something you never told me.""
Anna's expression changed.
"Daniel, don't.""
But he kept going.
"Four years ago, I found out that you had been keeping something from me, Claire. Something about a child.""
I stared at him.
I had never given birth to a child.
I had never secretly placed a baby for adoption.
I had never hidden a pregnancy from him.
At least, that was what I believed.
Then Anna reached into her bag and pulled out a sealed envelope.
She held it toward me.
"Claire," she whispered, "this is why I came today. I think Daniel has been hiding the truth about your family from you.""
May you like
The envelope bore a name I hadn't seen in years.
My mother's.
