Chapter 9: The Man Who Wanted Clara’s Legacy
The photograph slipped from Daniel’s hand.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The words on the back of the picture burned into his mind.
*I finally know why he wanted Lily's blood.*
Blood.
The word felt wrong.
Cold.
Like something that belonged in a nightmare, not in a birthday celebration.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
"What does that mean?""
Rebecca stared at the photograph.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"You didn't know.""
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"Know what?""
Rebecca looked at Lily.
Then at the photograph.
"Alexander wasn't searching for money.""
Henry closed his eyes.
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
"Then what was he searching for?""
Victor answered.
"The inheritance.""
Daniel frowned.
"What inheritance?""
Victor looked at Lily.
"Not financial.""
The room became silent.
"Then what?""
Rebecca slowly took the photograph from Daniel.
"Clara discovered that the Marquez family had something passed down for generations.""
Henry looked at her.
"You mean the records.""
"No.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"The records were only part of it.""
She turned the photograph over.
"The real reason Alexander was afraid of Clara was because she found the original documents.""
Daniel looked confused.
"What documents?""
Victor walked toward the desk.
"The ones that proved my grandfather's invention.""
Nobody spoke.
Daniel waited.
Victor continued.
"Before the lawsuit destroyed my family, my grandfather created a technology that changed the way companies stored energy.""
Henry looked at him.
"Your family lost everything because of that invention.""
"Because someone stole it.""
Victor's voice hardened.
"Someone from the Whitmore family.""
Daniel looked at Henry.
"You knew?""
Henry's face tightened.
"I knew there was a dispute.""
"Not the truth?""
"No.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"Everyone in this family always knows something.""
The words hurt because they were true.
Every person had a secret.
Every person had hidden behind the excuse of protection.
And Clara had been the one who paid the price.
Rebecca continued.
"Alexander believed Clara found proof that the invention belonged to the Marquez family.""
Daniel looked at Lily.
"But why Lily?""
Victor answered quietly.
"Because Clara's bloodline connected both families.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
"Your daughter inherited the legal rights.""
Henry looked shocked.
"That's impossible.""
"No.""
Victor shook his head.
"It's why Alexander changed Clara's records.""
Daniel stared.
"Explain.""
Rebecca placed the photograph on the table.
"The original adoption records didn't just reveal Clara's identity.""
She paused.
"They revealed that Clara was the rightful heir.""
Daniel looked at Lily.
"The rightful heir to what?""
Victor looked at him.
"To everything Alexander wanted.""
Silence.
Daniel felt anger rising.
"So he tried to erase Clara.""
"Yes.""
"Then he tried to use Lily.""
"Yes.""
"And Clara found out.""
Rebecca nodded.
"She found out three years ago.""
Daniel looked back at the photograph.
"Then why didn't she tell me?""
Rebecca's expression softened.
"Because she wasn't sure who she could trust.""
The words hurt.
Because they made sense.
Clara had spent her whole life surrounded by people who claimed to love her.
But almost everyone had lied.
Rebecca reached into her bag again.
"I found something else with the recording.""
She placed a small flash drive on the desk.
Daniel looked at it.
"What is that?""
"Clara's evidence.""
Henry stepped closer.
"Evidence against Alexander?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Everything she collected.""
Daniel stared.
"Why didn't you give this to the police?""
Rebecca looked away.
"Because Clara told me not to.""
Daniel frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she believed someone inside law enforcement was helping him.""
Henry shook his head.
"This is madness.""
"No.""
Victor looked at him.
"This is what Clara lived through.""
A silence followed.
Then Daniel picked up the flash drive.
"We watch it.""
Everyone looked at him.
Rebecca nodded.
"There is one problem.""
"What?""
"It needs a password.""
Daniel sighed.
"Of course it does.""
Henry looked at the device.
"Did Clara leave any clue?""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Yes.""
"What?""
She looked at Lily.
Daniel immediately understood.
"No.""
Rebecca looked at him.
"She didn't mean anything dangerous.""
"Then why are you looking at my daughter?""
"Because the password is connected to something only Lily would know.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"What?""
Rebecca took out another note.
"This was hidden with the drive.""
She unfolded it.
Clara's handwriting appeared again.
Daniel already knew the words would hurt.
"My little star,
If you are reading this, I need you to remember one thing.
You were my greatest gift.
Not my weakness.
Never let anyone make you believe that.""
Lily reached for the note.
Daniel let her hold it.
The little girl read slowly.
She was still learning.
But she recognized her mother's handwriting.
"Mommy wrote this for me.""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
Rebecca continued.
"The password is something Clara and Lily shared.""
Lily looked confused.
"What did Mommy and I share?""
Daniel smiled sadly.
"Think.""
The little girl closed her eyes.
She thought.
Then whispered:
"The stars.""
Everyone looked at her.
"When I was scared, Mommy said the stars watched over me.""
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
Rebecca typed.
The password failed.
Lily frowned.
"Maybe not.""
Daniel knelt beside her.
"What else?""
She thought harder.
Then her eyes widened.
"The little star.""
Daniel smiled.
"Try it.""
Rebecca typed again.
The device unlocked.
Everyone stared.
Clara's files appeared.
Photos.
Documents.
Videos.
Messages.
Daniel felt a strange mixture of relief and fear.
They were finally close.
Rebecca opened the largest file.
A video appeared.
Clara sat in front of the camera.
Daniel stopped breathing.
It was her.
His wife.
Alive.
Sitting at their old kitchen table.
The same table where they ate dinner.
The same place where Lily did homework.
Clara looked tired.
But she smiled.
"Hi, my little star.""
Lily immediately covered her mouth.
Daniel looked away.
Because hearing Clara speak directly to Lily was too painful.
The video continued.
"If you are watching this, then things didn't go the way I hoped.""
Clara took a breath.
"I want you to know something.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"I was never afraid of losing money.""
A pause.
"I was afraid of losing my family.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Clara continued.
"Someone close to me betrayed me.""
The room became still.
"But the person who gave them information wasn't doing it because they hated me.""
Daniel looked at Eleanor.
Then Henry.
Then the screen.
"They were being threatened.""
Everyone froze.
Clara continued.
"I discovered that Alexander wasn't working alone.""
Daniel leaned closer.
"What?""
On the screen, Clara looked down.
"There is someone else.""
A shadow crossed her face.
"Someone who has been protecting him.""
Henry whispered:
"Who?""
Clara looked back at the camera.
Then she said the words nobody expected.
"Someone I trusted with my life.""
The video glitched.
The screen flickered.
Then one final image appeared.
A document.
A signature.
Daniel stared.
Because he recognized the handwriting.
It wasn't Alexander's.
It wasn't Eleanor's.
It wasn't Henry's.
It was Clara's.
And beneath her signature was another name.
A name that made Rebecca step back.
A name that made Victor go silent.
A name Daniel had never heard before.
*Sofia Marquez.*
Then the video ended.
The lights in the library suddenly came back on.
Everyone turned.
Because the security system displayed one new alert.
*FRONT GATE OPENED.*
Henry looked toward the mansion entrance.
"Someone is leaving.""
Daniel grabbed the photograph.
"Who?""
A security camera feed appeared on the screen.
A black car was driving away.
Inside the car sat a person holding the missing letter.
The person who had taken Clara's final message.
The camera zoomed in.
And Daniel saw the driver.
His heart stopped.
Because the person escaping the mansion...
Was Alexander Whitmore.
But sitting beside him in the passenger seat was someone else.
Someone Daniel thought was helping them.
Someone who had just betrayed them again.
Rebecca whispered:
"No...""
Daniel stared at the screen.
Because the passenger turned toward the camera.
May you like
And smiled.
It was Eleanor.
