THE STRAP THAT NEVER FELL / Chapter 9 / 11

Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Floorboards

Daniel wanted to strike his brother.

He wanted to grab him by the collar, demand five years of answers, and force him to explain how a man could watch his own family grieve while hiding behind a false grave.

Instead, he stepped aside.

“Get inside.””

Andrew entered slowly.

He looked around the hallway as though he expected someone to appear behind him. His eyes lingered on the empty console where Grace's photograph had once stood.

Then he noticed the leather strap lying in a clear evidence bag on the dining table.

His expression changed.

“What happened?””

“Vanessa happened.””

Andrew's jaw tightened.

“Is Ethan all right?””

Daniel stared at him.

“You don't get to ask about my children as though you've been watching over them.””

“I have been.””

The answer came too quickly.

Daniel felt anger surge through him.

“You've been watching my children?””

“Not in person. I had someone check on them.””

“Who?””

“A woman named Claire. She works with a family protection service. She kept an eye on the school and the house from a distance.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Without telling me?””

“I couldn't risk contacting you.””

“You could risk sending photographs? Threatening messages? Leaving my children in the care of someone who was hurting them?””

Andrew looked down.

“I didn't know what Vanessa was doing.””

“You knew enough to hide.””

Andrew flinched.

For the first time, Daniel saw how much weight his brother had lost. His coat hung loosely around his shoulders. There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and his hands trembled when he tried to remove his gloves.

But Daniel refused to let pity replace the questions.

“Sit down.””

Andrew obeyed.

Daniel remained standing.

“Start with the night Grace died.””

Andrew stared at the table.

“I found out she was investigating Northbridge Holdings. She had discovered that money was being moved through a series of shell companies, and one of the accounts had been opened using your identity.””

“The transfer with my signature.””

“Yes.””

“Were you involved?””

Andrew closed his eyes.

“At the beginning.””

Daniel felt the admission like a blow.

“What does that mean?””

“I introduced Grace to the investment group. I thought they were legitimate. They promised to help your company recover after the financial crisis. I invested some of my own money, and when they needed a director for one of their holding companies, I agreed.””

“Did you steal from Grace?””

“No.””

“Did you forge my signature?””

“No.””

“Then what did you do?””

Andrew rubbed his face.

“I signed documents without reading them properly. I allowed them to use my name. When I realized what they were doing, it was too late. Money had disappeared, and they had enough paperwork to make it look as though I was responsible.””

Daniel paced toward the window.

“You could have told me.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Andrew looked up.

“The week Grace died.””

Daniel turned.

“Why didn't you?””

“Because Vanessa found out what I knew.””

The room went silent.

Andrew continued.

“She told me she had documents proving I had authorized the transfers. She said if I went to you or the police, she would make sure you lost your company and that Grace would be accused of fraud.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why would she care?””

“Because she was working with the people behind Northbridge.””

Andrew reached into his coat and removed a folded photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a hotel with a man Daniel recognized from the corporate records.

The man was named Richard Hale, the registered director of Northbridge Holdings.

On the back, Andrew had written a date.

Five months before Grace's death.

“She was their contact,” Andrew said.

“She handled the personal side of the operation. She found people who needed money, offered them investments, and used their trust to gain access to their accounts.””

Daniel remembered Vanessa's early conversations about his business.

She had asked about the company's finances, his insurance policies, his estate documents, and the location of important records.

At the time, he had taken those questions as signs that she wanted to build a future with him.

Now they felt like an inventory.

“Why marry me?”” he asked.

Andrew looked away.

“Because you had access to the company accounts, and Grace had discovered the original transfers.””

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“So our marriage was a business arrangement?””

“I think it started that way.””

“And the children?””

Andrew's expression softened.

“I don't know what she felt about the children. I believe she cared for them. But I know she wanted access to the estate documents and the insurance records.””

Daniel gripped the windowsill.

Vanessa had sat beside him through grief counseling. She had helped Ethan learn to ride a bicycle. She had held Sophie through countless fevers.

Had any of it been real?

He wasn't sure he could bear the answer.

“What happened the night Grace died?””

Andrew took a long breath.

“Grace called me at 8:30 p.m. She said she had found the original documents in the lockbox and was going to take them to the police. She asked me to meet her at the hospital because she was frightened someone was following her.””

“Why the hospital?””

“She had an appointment with Dr. Bennett. She wanted him to confirm that someone had altered her medical records.””

Daniel frowned.

“Her medical records?””

Andrew nodded.

“Grace believed she had been given medication she hadn't been prescribed. She thought someone had accessed her treatment history to make her appear unstable.””

Daniel remembered Vanessa saying Grace had been confused.

He remembered the hospital staff telling him his wife had suffered complications after the accident.

He had never questioned the details because the doctors had explained everything in language he barely understood.

“Did you meet her?””

“Yes. But I arrived too late.””

Andrew's voice broke.

“She had already been brought in. Vanessa was in the corridor with Laura Reeves. They told me Grace had been in an accident and that the doctors were trying to save her.””

“What did you do?””

“I went into the parking garage and called the police.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I saw Richard Hale's car leaving the hospital.””

The name hung between them.

“Did you tell the police?””

“I tried. But when I went back upstairs, Vanessa said she had a recording of me threatening Grace. She said she'd make sure I was blamed for everything.””

“Were you threatening her?””

“No. I was trying to persuade her to wait before going to the police. I thought we could recover the money and protect the children without exposing everything.””

Andrew's eyes filled.

“I was wrong.””

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he could imagine how the trap had closed around his brother. Andrew had made bad decisions. He had trusted the wrong people and allowed his name to be used.

But none of that explained why he had disappeared.

“Why fake your death?””

Andrew looked at his hands.

“Because the next morning, I received a photograph of Noah.””

Daniel's breath caught.

“They knew about him?””

“They knew Grace had arranged for him to be placed with the Lawsons. They threatened to hurt him if I cooperated with the police.””

Andrew reached into his coat and removed a small photograph of Noah sleeping in a crib.

“They told me that if I disappeared, they would leave him alone.””

“So you agreed.””

“I thought I was protecting him.””

“You left me to bury you.””

Andrew's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You left Mom believing she had lost both her sons.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe I had failed Grace, that I had failed you, that I had failed everyone.””

Andrew bowed his head.

“I know, Danny.””

Daniel turned away.

He wanted to forgive his brother because he had missed him every day for five years. He wanted to believe Andrew had done everything out of love.

But love did not erase the damage.

“Where is Noah now?””

“With Rebecca Lawson's sister. Her name is Emily. She took him in after Peter died.””

“Is he safe?””

Andrew hesitated.

“I don't know.””

Daniel stood.

“What do you mean, you don't know?””

“Emily stopped answering my calls two weeks ago. I went to Vermont, but her house was empty.””

Daniel felt the familiar cold settle beneath his ribs.

“Did you contact the police?””

“I contacted Claire. She found evidence that someone had been at the house, but we couldn't establish where they went.””

“Who was at the house?””

Andrew shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Daniel took out his phone and called his attorney.

He explained Andrew's appearance, the financial scheme, and the possibility that Noah had been moved without authorization. His attorney advised them to contact law enforcement immediately and to preserve every document and message.

Andrew agreed to cooperate.

Then he handed Daniel a small flash drive.

“This contains the records Grace copied before she died. Bank transfers, emails, company registrations, and a recording.””

“What recording?””

“Vanessa talking to Richard Hale.””

Daniel connected the drive to his laptop.

A folder appeared on the screen.

Inside were dozens of files, including bank statements and scanned contracts.

He opened the audio recording.

At first, there was only static.

Then Vanessa's voice filled the room.

“The child is the problem,” she said.

“As long as Noah exists, Grace has leverage.””

A man's voice answered.

“Then make sure she can't use it.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa continued.

“I don't want another death connected to me.””

Richard Hale laughed.

“Then stop leaving evidence.””

The recording ended.

Daniel sat frozen before the laptop.

Andrew watched him.

“That's why I came back.””

Daniel turned slowly.

“You came back because you realized you couldn't keep hiding.””

“Yes.””

“Not because you missed us.””

Andrew looked as though the words had cut him.

“Both things can be true.””

Before Daniel could respond, his phone rang.

His attorney.

He answered immediately.

“We have a problem,” she said.

“The investigator traced Emily Lawson's last known phone signal to a motel outside Burlington. The room was rented under a false name.””

“Was Noah with her?””

“We don't know. But someone left a message at the front desk asking for a package addressed to Daniel Mercer.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What package?””

“A small padded envelope. It was collected an hour ago by a woman matching Vanessa's description.””

Andrew stood abruptly.

“She has Noah.””

Daniel stared at him.

“How do you know?””

Andrew looked at the audio file on the laptop.

“Because Vanessa isn't trying to hide the child anymore.””

His phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

A photograph of Noah sitting on a bed, his face wet with tears.

Beside him lay the stuffed rabbit Sophie had been clutching.

Daniel's blood turned to ice.

The message contained only one sentence.

*Bring the blue key to the old warehouse by midnight, or you'll never see either child again.*

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

Sophie and Ethan were safe at Margaret's house.

For now.

But Vanessa had made one thing clear.

She was no longer interested in protecting her secrets.

May you like

She was willing to use the children to recover them.

And this time, Daniel would not let her leave with what she wanted.
