Chapter 9: The Son Who Came Back
We drove to Vanessa’s house faster than we should have.
Detective Harris followed.
Marcus didn’t speak once.
Neither did I.
Because after seven years of imagining this moment, I realized I had no idea what to say.
What do you say to a child who vanished?
A child who grew up without you?
A child who remembered your voice but not your arms?
When we arrived, the front door was open.
Vanessa stood outside.
Crying.
“He’s inside.””
I ran.
I didn’t walk.
I ran.
And then I saw him.
Standing in the living room.
Seventeen years old.
Taller than I expected.
His hair darker.
His face older.
But his eyes.
Those eyes were Elijah.
The same brown eyes that looked at me when he asked why the moon followed our car.
The same eyes that looked at me before he disappeared.
I stopped.
Because suddenly I was afraid.
Not of him.
Of the possibility that he wouldn’t know me.
That seven years had erased me.
“Mom?””
The word broke me.
I crossed the room.
And he let me.
That was the only permission I needed.
I held him.
And for the first time in seven years, I felt my son breathe.
He was real.
Not a photograph.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Real.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I pulled back.
“Why do you keep saying that?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I knew.””
My heart tightened.
“Knew what?””
“That you were looking.””
I touched his face.
“Elijah…”
“I heard them talk.””
His voice shook.
“Mom and Richard.””
He looked toward my uncle.
“I knew they were hiding me.””
Richard looked away.
“You knew?””
Elijah nodded.
“When I was little.””
My stomach twisted.
“How old were you when you understood?””
He swallowed.
“Eight.””
Eight.
My son was eight years old when he realized he had been taken.
I almost collapsed.
“Why didn’t you come home?””
He looked down.
“Because they told me you didn’t want me.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Elijah’s eyes filled.
“They said Dad was dangerous.””
My gaze moved to Marcus.
He looked destroyed.
“They told me the night at the lake was my fault.””
“No.””
The word came from Marcus.
“Elijah, no.””
My son looked at him.
And something passed between them.
Pain.
Love.
A lifetime lost.
“I remember you.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“I remember you too.””
Elijah wiped his face.
“You carried me.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
“At the lake.””
A tear rolled down Marcus’s cheek.
“You were asleep.””
Elijah shook his head.
“You woke up.””
The room became silent.
“You picked me up when I fell.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
“I remember.””
Finally.
After seven years.
The missing piece returned.
“You told me to hold on,” Elijah said.
Marcus cried.
“You said you would always find me.””
He walked forward.
Slowly.
Like he was afraid Elijah would disappear again.
Then he hugged him.
And my heart broke watching them.
Because this was the reunion we should have had years ago.
Not here.
Not after so much damage.
But now.
Finally.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Elijah, we need to understand what happened.””
Elijah nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“Can I tell you?””
I held his hand.
“Yes.””
He took a breath.
“That night, I saw Uncle Richard and Grandma arguing.””
Richard looked down.
“They were talking about money.””
Elijah continued.
“I didn’t understand.””
“You were six,” I whispered.
He nodded.
“Then Grandma saw me.””
His voice became quiet.
“She told me not to tell anyone.””
A chill moved through me.
“What did she do?””
“She took me to the car.””
Marcus stiffened.
“And then?””
“She said we were going somewhere safe.””
Elijah looked at Richard.
“But Uncle Richard was already there.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
Elijah continued.
“Grandma said she would bring me back when everything was fixed.””
I felt sick.
“She never planned to.””
Elijah nodded.
“I know that now.””
He looked at me.
“She kept telling me you forgot me.””
My tears fell.
“I never forgot you.””
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
He reached into his pocket.
A small folded piece of paper.
Old.
Worn.
He handed it to me.
I opened it.
And my breath disappeared.
It was a drawing.
From a child.
A family.
A house.
A sun.
And underneath:
*Mom will come back for me.*
My hands shook.
“I kept it.””
Elijah whispered.
“Because I knew you would.””
I hugged him again.
But then Detective Harris noticed something.
He took the paper carefully.
“Where did you get this?””
Elijah looked confused.
“From my old room.””
“What old room?””
Elijah looked toward Richard.
“The room Uncle Richard kept me in.””
Everyone froze.
Detective Harris looked at me.
“Richard never told us about a room.””
Richard’s face changed.
For the first time.
Real fear.
Not regret.
Not sadness.
Fear.
Elijah saw it.
And whispered:
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
His voice dropped.
“Someone else was there.””
The room went silent.
“Who?””
Elijah looked at the door.
Then at us.
“The person Grandma was protecting.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Elijah swallowed.
Then said a name.
A name none of us expected.
A name that changed everything.
“Dad’s brother.””
Marcus went pale.
“My brother?””
Elijah nodded.
“He came to the house.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
May you like
“Your brother is alive,” Elijah whispered.
“He’s the one who took me.””
