Chapter 8: The Evidence No One Wanted Found

Lily couldn’t speak.

Her grandmother’s words stayed in the room.

He betrayed your entire family.

Not a marriage.

Not a relationship.

A family.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“It means your father was hiding something bigger than Claire.””

Lily stood.

“Then tell me.””

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know something.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

She looked at the letter in Lily’s hands.

“Your mother discovered financial records.””

“Dad stole money?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Not exactly.””

Lily frowned.

“Then what?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Your father’s company was failing.””

The information surprised Lily.

“His company?””

Daniel Harper owned a construction company.

At least, that was what Lily knew.

Her father built houses.

He wore expensive suits.

He took clients to dinner.

Everything about his life looked stable.

“He told everyone he was successful,” Evelyn continued.

“But?””

“But he was drowning.””

Lily looked down.

“And Mom found out.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Your mother noticed things.””

Lily almost smiled.

That sounded exactly like her.

She noticed everything.

Small changes.

Small lies.

Small cracks.

“She found missing money.””

“How much?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Enough to ruin him.””

Lily felt cold.

“Did Claire know?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Claire worked in the company’s accounting department.””

Lily froze.

The story shifted again.

Claire wasn’t just someone her father met.

She had been connected to the problem from the beginning.

“She found the records?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She discovered something wasn’t right.””

“And she told Mom?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because Claire thought your father was only making mistakes.””

Lily understood.

“She didn’t know he was lying.””

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice became quiet.

“Not until later.””

That afternoon, Lily returned home.

The house felt different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because she had.

She walked inside and found Claire in the kitchen.

For a moment, they simply stared at each other.

Then Claire spoke.

“You went to see your grandmother.””

Lily stopped.

“How do you know?””

Claire looked down.

“She called me.””

Of course.

Everyone talked to everyone.

Everyone except Lily.

“What did she tell you?””

Claire dried her hands.

“The truth.””

Lily studied her.

“You knew about the documents.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew my mom wrote that letter.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was hiding something.””

“Yes.””

Every answer made Lily angrier.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked at her.

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty caught Lily off guard.

“Afraid of what?””

“Your father.””

The kitchen went silent.

“Daniel?””

Claire nodded.

“You think he would hurt you?””

“No.””

The answer came slowly.

“I think he would destroy himself trying to keep control.””

Lily didn’t know what that meant.

Then Claire walked to a cabinet.

She removed a small box from the back.

“I kept this for your mother.””

Inside was a flash drive.

Lily stared.

“What is it?””

“The evidence.””

Her heart pounded.

“Of what?””

Claire looked at her.

“Your father transferred money from the company into accounts nobody knew about.””

Lily shook her head.

“Why?””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“That’s the question your mother was trying to answer.””

Lily picked up the flash drive.

“What happened the night she went to the hospital?””

Claire looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Claire sat down.

Her hands trembled.

“Your mother confronted Daniel.””

Lily waited.

“She told him she knew.””

“Then?””

“He panicked.””

“Did he hurt her?””

Claire looked horrified.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“No, Lily. Your father made many terrible choices. But I do not believe he wanted your mother dead.””

The words should have comforted her.

They didn’t.

Because they left a worse question.

If nobody wanted her mother dead…

Why did she die?

Claire looked at the flash drive.

“There’s one thing you need to know.””

“What?””

“The night your mother went to the hospital…”

She stopped.

Then whispered:

“She wasn’t alone.””

Lily felt the room tilt.

“Who was with her?””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

May you like

And answered:

“Someone who has been lying to you since the day your mother died.””
