Chapter 9: The Last Door
I wanted to go straight home.
Marcus stopped me.
“No.””
“My children are there.””
“And that's exactly what Diane wants.””
“She has Leo and Maya.””
“I know.””
“Then move.””
He gripped the steering wheel.
“We need a plan.””
Victor leaned forward.
“There's no time.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You've been waiting twenty-seven years. You can wait ten minutes.””
Victor's eyes hardened.
“My brother is alive.””
Marcus said nothing.
“My niece and nephew are in that house.””
Victor's voice cracked.
“And Diane has already taken one family from me.””
I looked at him.
He was right.
We didn't have ten minutes.
We had perhaps five.
Marcus finally started the car.
“We go in through the rear.””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
“What?””
“Diane will expect that.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she designed the house.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She renovated it after Elena moved in.””
My stomach dropped.
“The kitchen.””
“The walls.””
“The wiring.””
Victor nodded.
“She created blind spots in the security system.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You knew this?””
“I suspected.””
“That's not good enough.””
Victor pulled out his phone.
“I have the original renovation plans.””
He opened a file.
A section of the house was highlighted.
“There's a second basement.””
I looked at the blueprint.
“Another one?””
“Thomas found it after the crash.””
Marcus studied the layout.
“And the entrance?””
Victor pointed.
“Behind the pantry.””
We reached the house.
No lights were visible from outside.
The rain had stopped.
That made everything worse.
The silence felt deliberate.
Marcus parked three houses away.
We approached on foot.
I moved slowly with my crutches.
Every step hurt.
But pain had become background noise.
The kitchen door was unlocked.
Inside, everything looked normal.
The refrigerator hummed.
A clock ticked.
A glass sat beside the sink.
I whispered, “Diane?””
No answer.
Victor pointed toward the pantry.
We opened the door.
Nothing.
Then he pressed the third shelf.
A panel moved.
A staircase appeared.
Marcus drew his weapon.
We descended.
At the bottom was a narrow hallway.
A voice came through a speaker.
Diane.
“You were always smarter than I gave you credit for.””
I stopped.
“Where are my children?””
“Safe.””
“Let me hear them.””
A child's voice came through.
“Mama?””
Leo.
I nearly collapsed.
“Leo!””
“Mommy!””
“I'm here.””
Diane interrupted.
“Enough.””
The speaker clicked off.
Victor looked at me.
“She wants something.””
“I know.””
A door opened ahead.
We entered a room filled with monitors.
Security footage covered the walls.
Our house.
The street.
The hospital.
The children's daycare.
Even the cemetery where Thomas was buried.
I stared at the screens.
Diane had been watching us.
For years.
Marcus whispered, “This is enough to put her away.””
Victor shook his head.
“Not if she destroys it.””
A voice came from behind us.
“I'm afraid he's right.””
Daniel stepped into the room.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
That somehow frightened me more.
I looked at him.
“You betrayed me.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
“I protected you.””
“You helped Diane.””
“I worked for Thomas.””
“Thomas told me not to trust you.””
Daniel looked away.
“He was right.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because I couldn't protect him.””
Victor stepped forward.
“You sold him out.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Thomas discovered the trust.””
I nodded.
“The shares.””
“Yes.””
“And Diane wanted them.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't Thomas transfer them to me?””
“Because he knew Diane would kill you if she learned the shares existed.””
I stared at him.
“So he faked his death.””
Daniel nodded.
“He needed Diane to believe she had won.””
My voice broke.
“Three weeks.””
“I know.””
“You let me grieve him.””
“I know.””
“You watched my mother take over my house.””
“I was trying to keep her focused on the property.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You call that protection?””
Daniel looked at the monitors.
“No.””
He swallowed.
“I call it failure.””
A door opened.
Diane entered.
She wore the same gray cardigan.
Her hair was perfectly styled.
She looked like the mother who had brought me soup when I was sick.
The mother who had held my babies.
The mother everyone trusted.
She smiled.
“Elena.””
I stepped toward her.
“Where are my children?””
“Upstairs.””
“Bring them down.””
“You have something first.””
Victor moved beside me.
Diane looked at him.
Her smile vanished.
“You.””
Victor's voice was flat.
“Hello, Diane.””
She stared at him as though seeing a ghost.
“You should have stayed dead.””
Victor laughed.
“You tried that once.””
Diane looked at Daniel.
“You failed.””
Daniel didn't respond.
Diane reached into her purse.
Marcus raised his weapon.
“Don't.””
She stopped.
Then she smiled.
“I don't need a gun.””
She pulled out her phone.
A live video appeared.
Leo and Maya were sitting in the living room.
A man stood behind them.
Diane said, “One button.””
I looked at her.
“What do you want?””
“The key.””
I pulled the brass key from my pocket.
She nodded.
“And Victor.””
“No.””
“Then the children stay where they are.””
Victor whispered, “Give her the key.””
I looked at him.
He nodded.
I handed it to Diane.
She took it.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“Tell me what?””
He couldn't speak.
Diane smiled.
“Tell her who ordered Thomas's crash.””
My blood froze.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who?””
He closed his eyes.
“I did.””
Silence.
I stared at him.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“I was the one who arranged the crash.””
Victor lunged.
Marcus caught him.
“You don't understand,” Daniel shouted.
“I was trying to make Thomas disappear.””
“People died!””
“I know!””
Diane stepped backward.
“You're wasting time.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She frowned.
I pointed toward the monitor.
“The children are safe.””
“How do you know?””
“Because the man behind them isn't one of yours.””
Diane's face changed.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Victor.
Then the monitor.
The man holding Leo and Maya suddenly turned toward the camera.
He removed his hat.
I knew him.
Everyone did.
Thomas.
Alive.
He smiled.
And Diane whispered the one thing I had been waiting three weeks to hear.
“No.””
Then the basement lights came on.
Every door locked.
And Thomas's voice came through the speakers.
“Hello, Diane.””
May you like
