The Seat That Wasn't Hers / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Door

The apartment went silent.

Not peaceful silent.

The kind of silence that comes right before something breaks.

My mother grabbed the flash drive from the table.

“Maya, go.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Bedroom. Now.””

“Mom—”

“Please.””

I had never heard her voice like that.

Not angry.

Not upset.

Afraid.

I grabbed the folder and ran.

I closed the bedroom door but left it slightly open.

I could hear everything.

The lock turned.

My mother opened the door.

Daniel’s voice came first.

“Angela.””

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then Vanessa.

“We need to talk.””

My mother laughed quietly.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“Please don’t make this worse.””

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

Make this worse.

That was what he said.

Not “I’m sorry.””

Not “I made a mistake.””

Make this worse.

Vanessa entered.

Her heels clicked against the floor.

“Where is it?””

My heart jumped.

My mother’s voice was calm.

“Where is what?””

“The drive.””

Silence.

Then my mother laughed.

“You really think I would give it to you?””

Vanessa’s voice became colder.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“No.””

My mother replied.

“I understand perfectly.””

I moved closer to the door.

Daniel spoke.

“Angela, listen to me.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice cracked.

“You listened to her for years. Now you can listen to me.””

A chair moved.

Someone sat down.

“Daniel: We never wanted to hurt Maya.””

My hands tightened.

My father sounded sincere.

But I had heard sincere before.

From people who still lied.

“You don’t get to say that.””

My mother continued.

“You took her childhood memories and replaced them with a story where I was the villain.””

Daniel whispered:

“I thought it was better.””

“Better for who?””

No answer.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Your daughter deserves stability.””

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was still using the same excuse.

My mother said:

“You mean control.””

Vanessa became quiet.

Then:

“You always were dramatic.””

That sentence changed something.

Because my mother laughed.

A real laugh.

Not happy.

Just tired.

“You still don’t see it, do you?””

“What?””

“You think this is about me.””

My mother’s voice lowered.

“It was never about me.””

A pause.

“It was about Maya.””

My eyes filled with tears.

For years, I thought my mother left because she gave up.

Because she chose herself.

But she had been fighting in a way I never saw.

Quietly.

Alone.

Daniel spoke again.

“Angela, give us the drive.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Rebecca trusted me.””

The room became still.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You should have stayed quiet.””

A chill went through me.

My mother heard it too.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“It’s advice.””

I couldn’t stay hidden anymore.

I opened the bedroom door.

Everyone turned.

My father looked shocked.

Vanessa looked annoyed.

My mother looked terrified.

“Maya.””

I stepped into the room.

“No more secrets.””

Daniel stood.

“Maya, this isn’t what you think.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

My voice shook.

“But every time I find out more, it’s exactly what I think.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“You shouldn’t be involved in this.””

I looked at her.

“You made me involved the day you took my mother’s seat.””

Her expression changed.

For the first time, I saw anger without a mask.

“You have no idea what your mother has done.””

“Then tell me.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

My father stepped forward.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“She deserves the truth.””

I waited.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Your mother didn’t just know about Rebecca.””

My eyes moved to Angela.

My mother looked away.

Vanessa smiled.

“She helped cover it up.””

The words hit like a weapon.

I turned toward my mother.

“Mom?””

She looked devastated.

Not angry.

Not shocked.

Devastated.

Because this was the moment she had been afraid of.

“Maya…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

My voice became a whisper.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

My mother didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence broke my heart.

Finally, she said:

“I didn’t tell you because I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“Protect me from what?””

She looked at the flash drive hidden in her hand.

Then at me.

“From knowing that the night Rebecca died…”

She stopped.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was there.””

The room disappeared.

My father.

Vanessa.

The apartment.

Everything.

Only those words remained.

I was there.

My mother had been at the scene.

She had known the truth.

And she had hidden it from me.

Then my father’s phone rang.

Nobody moved.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then his hand dropped.

“What happened?””

We all watched him.

May you like

And then he whispered the sentence that changed everything.

“Rebecca’s death was never an accident.””
