Chapter 10: The Woman Behind The Plan
Michael stared at the message on his phone.
Nobody moved.
The name at the bottom of the screen felt impossible.
Chloe.
The same woman who had stolen my seat.
The same woman who had written a letter trying to destroy his opportunity.
The same woman who claimed she was afraid of Daniel.
Now she was saying Daniel was lying.
Michael looked at me.
“What do we do?””
I knew that question wasn’t just about the message.
It was about everything.
Twenty years of secrets.
Twenty years of pain.
A lifetime of unanswered questions.
Daniel stood suddenly.
“No.””
Michael looked at him.
“What?””
“Don’t go alone.””
Daniel’s voice was firm.
“Why?””
“Because Chloe knows how to manipulate people.””
I almost laughed.
The irony was painful.
Daniel had spent years hiding things, and now he was warning us about someone else’s manipulation.
Michael noticed my expression.
“Dad, why should we trust you?””
Daniel looked down.
“You shouldn’t.””
The honesty surprised all of us.
“But you should be careful.””
Richard nodded slowly.
“He’s right about one thing.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Chloe is dangerous when she feels cornered.””
Michael put the phone away.
“Then we all go.””
An hour later, we were sitting inside a quiet restaurant near downtown.
Chloe had chosen the location.
Not us.
She arrived wearing a simple black jacket.
No designer clothes.
No confident smile.
She looked exhausted.
She sat across from us.
“I knew Daniel would tell you about the safe deposit box.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You knew?””
She looked at him.
“Yes.””
Michael leaned forward.
“Then explain.””
Chloe looked at me first.
“I owe your mother the truth.””
I stayed silent.
She continued.
“When I met Daniel, I knew he had a family.””
Daniel looked away.
“I know.””
Michael’s voice was cold.
“You knew, and you still married him?””
Chloe nodded.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No denial.
Just the truth.
“I was ambitious. I wanted a different life. Daniel had connections, money, and opportunities.””
She looked down.
“And I ignored the kind of man he really was.””
Daniel looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
Chloe opened her bag.
She pulled out a small recorder.
“I have proof.””
Michael frowned.
“Of what?””
“Of everything.””
She placed it on the table.
“When Daniel discovered the fraud involving my father, he threatened to expose him.””
Richard nodded.
“That’s what happened.””
Chloe looked at him.
“But you don’t know the whole story.””
Richard became quiet.
Chloe pressed a button.
A voice filled the restaurant.
Her father.
I recognized the anger immediately.
“Daniel thinks he can destroy me? He has no idea who he’s dealing with.””
Then another voice.
Daniel.
Younger.
Scared.
“Leave my family alone.””
My hand covered my mouth.
Michael froze.
Chloe stopped the recording.
“I found this years ago.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I realized what my father was capable of.””
She looked at me.
“And because I realized what I had become.””
Nobody spoke.
Chloe continued.
“I thought I could control everything.””
She laughed quietly.
“I thought money meant safety.””
Her eyes filled.
“But after my father threatened Daniel, I started seeing the truth.””
Michael crossed his arms.
“So why did you hurt my mother?””
Chloe looked at me.
“I was jealous.””
The answer was so simple.
So human.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“You had everything I wanted.””
I frowned.
“I had nothing.””
Chloe shook her head.
“You had something I never had.””
“What?””
“Someone who loved you without needing anything in return.””
The words surprised me.
Because they came from the person who had caused so much pain.
Chloe pushed another folder across the table.
“Your father didn’t just hide things from you.””
She looked at Daniel.
“He hid things from me too.””
Michael opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Messages.
Contracts.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he stopped.
“What is this?””
Daniel leaned forward.
Michael looked up.
“Dad transferred ownership of the company.””
Daniel went pale.
“What?””
Chloe smiled sadly.
“Because he knew he was going down.””
Michael looked confused.
“To who?””
Chloe pointed at the document.
The name was written clearly.
Michael Anderson.
My son’s face changed.
“He put the company under my name.””
Daniel whispered:
“I was trying to protect you.””
Michael stood.
“No.””
The restaurant became silent.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
Michael grabbed the documents.
“You made me your shield.””
And for the first time, Daniel had no explanation.
Because the truth was sitting right in front of him.
The man who claimed he left to protect his family had spent years making choices that put the burden on his son.
As we left the restaurant, Michael walked ahead of us.
I followed him outside.
“Michael.””
He stopped.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
I touched his shoulder.
“You don’t have to figure everything out tonight.””
He looked at me.
“But I need to know one thing.””
“What?””
He looked back at the restaurant.
“Who was really the victim?””
Before I could answer, Richard ran outside.
His face was pale.
“Laura.””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He held up his phone.
“The safe deposit box.””
My heart tightened.
“What about it?””
Richard swallowed.
“It was opened this morning.””
Daniel stepped outside.
“Impossible.””
May you like
Richard looked at him.
“And everything inside is gone.””
