Chapter 9: The Woman Who Disappeared
Mia stood completely still.
“Mom?””
The woman lowered the gun slightly.
“Come here.””
Mia didn't move.
“You're dead.””
The woman smiled sadly.
“That was the point.””
Daniel stepped in front of Mia.
“Stay back.””
The woman looked at him.
“So you're Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“I've heard a lot about you.””
“Who are you?””
“My name is Evelyn Carter.””
Mia whispered,
“Mom.””
Evelyn's eyes softened.
“I know.””
Harrison stared at her.
“You knew Margaret.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“For thirty years.””
“Then why did Margaret never tell me?””
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Harrison's voice shook.
“From whom?””
Evelyn looked toward the window.
“Everyone.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Where is Thomas?””
Evelyn's expression hardened.
“Running.””
“He has the ledger.””
“No.””
Harrison frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“The book he took isn't the real ledger.””
Daniel stared.
“You knew?””
“I knew Thomas would take it.””
Harrison's eyes narrowed.
“Then why let him?””
“Because now he'll stop looking for the real one.””
Victor looked at the memory card.
“Which means this contains something else.””
Evelyn nodded.
“The evidence Margaret gathered.””
Daniel looked at Mia.
“And Mom trusted her?””
“She trusted my daughter more than she trusted me.””
Mia's voice broke.
“Why didn't you tell me you were alive?””
“Because Thomas would have killed you.””
“You let me think I was alone.””
“I let you survive.””
Mia wiped her eyes.
“You could have come back.””
“I wanted to.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Evelyn looked at Harrison.
“Because your father made me a promise.””
Harrison stared.
“What promise?””
“To keep Mia alive.””
Daniel turned toward his father.
“Dad?””
Harrison remembered.
A rainy night.
Twenty-two years earlier.
Evelyn standing outside Margaret's house.
Holding a frightened little girl.
Mia.
Thomas had been searching for them.
Margaret had taken the girl inside.
Harrison had promised Evelyn he would protect her.
But he had forgotten.
Or perhaps he had forced himself to forget.
Evelyn continued.
“Your father thought Thomas died in the river.””
Harrison shook his head.
“I saw him fall.””
“You saw someone fall.””
Harrison stared.
“What?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Thomas switched places with his driver.””
Victor stepped forward.
“The driver was the body they identified.””
“Yes.””
“And Thomas disappeared.””
“For twenty-two years.””
Daniel looked at the clock.
“We don't have time.””
Evelyn nodded.
“No.””
She turned to Victor.
“Decrypt the card.””
Victor connected it to his phone.
A password prompt appeared.
“What is the password?””
Evelyn looked at Harrison.
“Margaret's first dog.””
Harrison frowned.
“Lucy.””
Invalid.
Victor tried again.
“Her maiden name?””
Invalid.
Harrison closed his eyes.
“Think.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Dad?””
Harrison remembered something.
Margaret had once told him about a place she loved as a child.
A small lake.
A cabin.
A wooden sign.
He whispered,
“Bluebird.””
Victor entered it.
The screen opened.
Hundreds of files appeared.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Daniel stared.
“This is everything.””
Victor scrolled.
“Not everything.””
“What do you mean?””
“There are files marked with your father's name.””
Harrison stepped closer.
“What?””
Victor opened one.
It showed transfers from an account in Harrison's name.
Daniel looked at his father.
“You said those were fake.””
“They are.””
Victor opened another.
A scanned document appeared.
A signature.
Harrison's.
Daniel stared.
“That looks like your signature.””
Harrison shook his head.
“It isn't.””
Victor zoomed in.
“It's a forgery.””
“How can you tell?””
“Your father signs his H with a loop.””
Victor pointed.
“This one doesn't.””
Harrison stared.
Then he noticed another detail.
A small black mark beside the signature.
His heart stopped.
“Thomas.””
“What?”” Daniel asked.
“That mark.””
Harrison pointed.
“Thomas used it on every forged document.””
Evelyn nodded.
“He wanted the authorities to believe your father was stealing from the company.””
Daniel looked at the files.
“Why?””
“To make your father look guilty when the money disappeared.””
Victor opened another file.
A list of payments.
Recipients.
Dates.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*DANIEL HARRISON.*
Daniel went pale.
“Why is my name there?””
Mia stepped closer.
“Because Thomas planned to frame you.””
“For what?””
Victor opened the attached document.
A murder investigation.
Daniel stared.
“My name is on a murder warrant.””
Harrison grabbed the phone.
“That's impossible.””
Victor nodded.
“It hasn't been filed yet.””
“When?””
“Tomorrow morning.””
Daniel's face went white.
“Whose murder?””
Victor looked at him.
“Thomas Hale.””
Silence.
Daniel stared.
“They're planning to make it look like I killed him.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And then they will kill Thomas.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why kill their own man?””
“Because Thomas knows too much.””
Harrison understood.
“Someone above him.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then said,
“Your former business partner wasn't Mr. Black.””
Harrison stared.
“Thomas is Mr. Black.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Thomas works for him.””
Victor looked stunned.
“Then who is Mr. Black?””
Evelyn looked toward Harrison.
“You've met him.””
Harrison's mind raced through every person connected to his business.
Employees.
Lawyers.
Investors.
Friends.
Family.
Then he remembered the voice on the phone.
The person who had known about the letter.
The person who had known about the blue box.
The person who had access to the security system.
Harrison whispered,
“Daniel.””
His son looked at him.
“What?””
“Who installed the cameras?””
Daniel frowned.
“The security company.””
“Who recommended them?””
Daniel's face changed.
“Thomas.””
“No.””
Harrison shook his head.
“Think.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then slowly said,
“Victor.””
Victor went still.
Harrison looked at him.
“You knew about the camera.””
Victor's expression hardened.
“You told me about the camera.””
“No.””
Harrison stepped closer.
“I never told you.””
Victor didn't move.
“You were in the house before anyone else.””
Daniel stepped away from him.
“You were the one who said the camera was bait.””
Victor looked at him.
“Because it was.””
“You knew there was a trip wire.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Victor said nothing.
Harrison's voice became quiet.
“You weren't Margaret's attorney.””
Victor's face changed.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Harrison continued.
“You knew too much.””
Victor slowly smiled.
“You're finally remembering.””
Evelyn raised her gun.
“Victor.””
Victor looked at her.
“You should have stayed hidden.””
“Who are you?””
Victor laughed.
“You really want to know?””
Harrison stared at him.
“Mr. Black.””
Daniel's face went white.
Mia backed away.
“No.””
Victor removed his glasses.
Then he pulled a small device from his pocket.
The lights went out.
Again.
A gunshot cracked through the darkness.
Someone screamed.
Daniel grabbed Harrison.
“Dad!””
“Stay down!””
A second shot.
Glass shattered.
Then a voice spoke through the darkness.
Victor.
“I'm sorry, Daniel.””
Harrison heard footsteps.
“Sorry for what?””
Victor's voice came closer.
“For making your father choose.””
The emergency lights flickered on.
Victor stood beside the table.
His gun was pointed at Mia.
Thomas stood behind him.
The ledger lay between them.
And Thomas was smiling.
Victor looked at Harrison.
“Give me the memory card.””
Harrison shook his head.
“No.””
Victor's expression remained calm.
“Then Mia dies.””
Mia closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Take me instead.””
Victor smiled.
“That's exactly what I wanted.””
Harrison looked at his son.
“No.””
Daniel turned.
“Dad.””
Harrison whispered,
“Don't trust him.””
Victor laughed.
“Too late.””
He pulled back the hammer.
Then Evelyn fired.
The bullet struck Victor's shoulder.
Victor staggered.
Thomas raised his weapon.
Evelyn fired again.
Thomas ducked.
Daniel grabbed Mia and pulled her behind the table.
Harrison seized the memory card.
“Run!””
They raced toward the kitchen.
Victor shouted,
“Stop them!””
Thomas chased them.
Harrison pushed open the back door.
Cold rain hit his face.
They ran into the yard.
Daniel held Mia's hand.
Evelyn followed.
Victor stumbled after them.
Thomas appeared in the doorway.
“Harrison!””
Harrison turned.
Thomas raised his gun.
But before he could fire, a police spotlight swept across the yard.
A loudspeaker shouted,
“DROP YOUR WEAPON!””
Thomas froze.
Victor looked toward the road.
Three police vehicles blocked the driveway.
Real officers surrounded the property.
Daniel stared.
“How did they find us?””
Harrison looked at Evelyn.
She smiled.
“I called them before I came inside.””
An officer approached.
“Mr. Harrison, step away from the house.””
Harrison nodded.
Then the officer looked at Mia.
“Ma'am, we need to speak with you.””
Mia stepped forward.
“About what?””
The officer's expression changed.
“You're under arrest.””
Daniel froze.
“For what?””
The officer looked at Harrison.
“Your daughter-in-law is wanted in connection with a murder.””
Mia went pale.
“What?””
“Margaret Harrison.””
Harrison's heart stopped.
“That can't be.””
The officer pulled out a warrant.
“Mia Carter is accused of poisoning Margaret Harrison six years ago.””
Daniel looked at Mia.
“No.””
Mia shook her head.
“I didn't.””
The officer reached for her wrists.
Harrison stepped forward.
“Wait.””
The officer looked at him.
“The evidence is forged.””
“We have photographs, financial records, and a witness.””
“Who?””
The officer glanced toward Victor.
But Victor was gone.
Thomas was gone too.
Only the broken front door remained.
Harrison looked at the warrant.
Then at Mia.
Then at Daniel.
And finally at Evelyn.
Evelyn's face had gone pale.
“What's wrong?”” Harrison asked.
She pointed at the warrant.
“The signature.””
Harrison looked down.
The signature authorizing Mia's arrest was handwritten.
He recognized it.
It was the same handwriting from the life insurance document.
The same handwriting from the forged company records.
The same handwriting from Margaret's letter.
Harrison whispered,
“That isn't the police chief's signature.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“It's Margaret's.””
Harrison stared.
“But Margaret is dead.””
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Exactly.””
Behind them, Daniel's phone buzzed.
One new message.
*YOU FOUND THE WRONG WOMAN.*

Then another.
