Chapter 6: The Evidence Sarah Hid

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

Evidence.

That was the word that stayed in my mind.

Not documents.

Not memories.

Evidence.

“What kind of evidence?”” I asked.

Robert Hayes was quiet for a moment.

“I can’t discuss everything over the phone.””

“Then tell me what you can.””

“Sarah came to my office two months before she passed away.””

My throat tightened.

“She went alone?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she was afraid you would confront Vanessa.””

I sat down.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

“Why was Sarah afraid of Vanessa?””

The attorney sighed.

“She didn’t know for certain that Vanessa had bad intentions.””

“But?””

“But she noticed things.””

I looked toward the staircase.

At Lily’s room.

“What things?””

“Questions about finances.””

My jaw tightened.

“Sarah knew.””

“She suspected.””

“What else?””

“She told me Vanessa was becoming unusually interested in Lily’s future.””

The words felt heavy.

Like every warning sign I ignored had been sitting there waiting for me.

“Why didn’t Sarah tell me?””

Robert answered softly.

“Because she was dying.””

I closed my eyes.

That was the truth I hated.

Sarah didn’t have endless time.

She was trying to protect Lily while fighting to stay alive.

“She told me she didn’t want your final memories of her to be fear and suspicion,” Robert continued.

My eyes burned.

“She wanted peace.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Peace.””

I looked around the house.

The house where Lily had started feeling like a guest.

“There hasn’t been peace.””

“I know.””

“What evidence did she leave?””

Robert lowered his voice.

“There are recordings.””

My heart skipped.

“Recordings?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

“Conversations Sarah had with Vanessa.””

I stood up.

“Where are they?””

“I have them.””

“Send them to me.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Sarah left instructions.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

Sarah always thought ten steps ahead.

“What instructions?””

Robert paused.

“You need to meet me in person.””

“When?””

“Today.””

I looked toward the window.

The sky outside was darkening.

“Send me the address.””

After the call ended, I sat alone for several minutes.

Then I heard a small voice behind me.

“Dad?””

I turned.

Lily stood there holding her rabbit.

She looked terrified.

“How much did you hear?””

She shrugged.

“Enough.””

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart.””

“Are you mad?””

“No.””

“But Vanessa is gone because of me.””

My heart shattered.

“Lily, look at me.””

She looked up.

“You did nothing wrong.””

“She left because I’m difficult.””

“No.””

“She said I make things harder.””

I knelt.

“Your existence is not a problem.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

She hugged me tightly.

And in that moment, I realized something.

I had spent years trying to give Lily a mother.

But I forgot the one thing she needed most.

Someone who believed her.

The next morning, I met Robert at his office.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Kind eyes.

The kind of person Sarah would have trusted.

He placed a small box on the table.

“She left this for you.””

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Ethan,

If you are watching these, it means my fears were not just fears.

I had to stop reading.

My vision blurred.

Robert waited silently.

“She loved you very much,” he said.

I nodded.

“I know.””

“No,” he said gently.

“You don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Sarah told me something.””

“What?””

“She said you would blame yourself.””

I looked down.

Because he was right.

“I should have seen it.””

Robert shook his head.

“Sarah knew you would say that.””

He pushed the flash drive toward me.

“Watch them when you are ready.””

I took it home.

I waited until Lily was asleep.

Then I opened my laptop.

The first video loaded.

The quality was poor.

A hidden camera.

A date appeared.

Two years earlier.

I froze.

Two years earlier meant Sarah was still alive.

The video showed Sarah sitting in the kitchen.

Across from Vanessa.

My heart started racing.

Sarah looked tired.

But strong.

Vanessa looked younger.

Less careful.

Then Sarah spoke.

“Vanessa, I need you to understand something.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

Sarah leaned forward.

“Lily is not a replacement for me.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I never said she was.””

“You didn’t have to.””

The room became silent.

Then Sarah said something that made me stop breathing.

“I know you don’t love her.””

I froze.

Vanessa laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

Sarah looked at her.

“I know enough.””

The video continued.

“I know you love Ethan.””

Vanessa smiled.

“And?””

“And I know you see Lily as the one thing standing between you and the life you want.””

I covered my mouth.

Because Sarah had seen it.

She had seen everything.

Then Vanessa leaned forward.

And whispered:

“Maybe if Lily wasn’t here, Ethan would finally be mine.””

The video stopped.

I stared at the black screen.

My hands were shaking.

Then another file appeared.

One I hadn’t noticed before.

The name was simple.

“Final Conversation.””

I clicked it.

The recording started.

And within five seconds, I heard a voice I recognized.

Vanessa.

But this time…

She wasn’t talking about taking Lily away.

She was talking about something much worse.

“After Ethan’s birthday, everything changes.””

A second voice answered.

Daniel.

“What if he finds out?””

Vanessa replied:

“He won’t.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“Because by then, he’ll have no choice but to give me everything.””

I leaned closer.

My heart pounding.

Then Daniel asked:

“What about Lily?””

The room went silent.

And Vanessa answered:

“Lily won’t be a problem anymore.””

The recording continued.

But I barely heard the rest.

Because one thought filled my mind.

Vanessa wasn’t planning to leave.

May you like

She was planning to take over.

And my birthday was only days away.
