The Papers He Hid From Me / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10: The Truth He Never Wanted Me To Find

For ten seconds after Rachel’s call ended, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not David.

Not Olivia.

Not even my parents.

The room felt frozen around one sentence.

Your daughter isn’t just his child.

I replayed the words over and over.

Not because I didn’t understand them.

Because I did.

And I was terrified that I understood exactly what they meant.

David was the first person to speak.

“Sarah.””

I looked at him.

“What if she’s lying?””

I wanted to believe that.

I needed to believe that.

But Rachel had risked everything to expose Mark.

She had been afraid of him long before I knew what he was capable of.

“She sounded scared,” I whispered.

Olivia closed her laptop.

“Then we find her.””

My father looked confused.

“What does she mean the baby isn’t his child?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Not yet.

But I did know one thing.

Mark had been planning my life before I even knew I was part of his plan.

And if there was one secret left hidden, I needed to find it before he used it against me.

The next morning, Olivia tracked down the last location connected to Rachel’s phone.

A roadside motel outside the city.

David insisted on coming.

I didn’t argue.

Three days earlier, I would have apologized for needing help.

Now I understood something.

There was a difference between dependence and support.

Mark wanted me alone.

The people who loved me wanted me alive.

When we reached the motel, Rachel was sitting on the edge of a bed with a bag beside her.

The moment she saw me, she started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed the door behind us.

“For what?””

“For not telling you sooner.””

I sat across from her.

“Tell me now.””

Rachel nodded.

Her hands shook.

“Before Mark met you, he was engaged.””

I waited.

“To another woman.””

David crossed his arms.

“What happened?””

Rachel looked at me.

“She died.””

The room went silent.

“How?”” I asked.

Rachel swallowed.

“Car accident.””

“That’s terrible.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“But the story Mark told everyone wasn’t the truth.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What story?””

“That she was unstable. That she was careless. That she caused the accident.””

My stomach tightened.

“Was that true?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She opened her bag.

Inside was another folder.

Of course there was.

Another folder.

Another hidden truth.

She pulled out a photograph.

A woman.

Young.

Smiling.

Happy.

“That’s Lauren.””

I looked at the picture.

“She was pregnant.””

The room became completely silent.

“Pregnant?””

Rachel nodded.

“Six months.””

I touched my stomach.

My daughter moved slightly.

A wave of fear passed through me.

“What does this have to do with my baby?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Everything.””

She opened another document.

A medical report.

The name at the top made my breath catch.

Lauren Bennett.

“After the accident, Mark discovered something.””

“What?””

Rachel hesitated.

“That the baby survived.””

I stared.

“Lauren’s baby?””

Rachel nodded.

“She was taken to the hospital before she died.””

My hands went cold.

“Where is the child?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Sarah.””

Her voice broke.

“The baby was adopted.””

I waited.

I knew there was something more.

There was always something more with Mark.

“By who?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because the next document told me.

The adoption records.

The date.

The names.

The adoptive parents.

My eyes moved to the bottom.

And stopped.

Mark Mercer.

My husband.

The man who told me he wanted a family.

The man who told me he dreamed of having a daughter.

The man who held my hand when I found out I was pregnant.

The man who cried in the hospital room.

He had already had a daughter.

A daughter he lost.

Or rather…

A daughter he abandoned.

I looked up.

“I don’t understand.””

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“Mark adopted Lauren’s child.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

David’s face hardened.

“Explain.””

Rachel took a breath.

“Mark believed children created loyalty. He thought if he had a child, nobody could leave him.””

A chill moved through me.

“He wanted my baby because…”

“Because you were pregnant with the first child that was biologically his.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No.””

She pushed another document forward.

A DNA report.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

The result was not what I expected.

Probability of paternity: 0%.

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not David.

Not Olivia.

Not Rachel.

Nothing.

My hand went to my stomach.

My baby.

My daughter.

The little girl I had protected before she was even born.

Not Mark’s.

I looked at Rachel.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“I don’t know.””

My heart broke.

Not because Mark wasn’t the father.

Because I suddenly understood.

He knew.

He knew this entire time.

And he stayed.

He married me.

He built a life with me.

Why?

Olivia took the document.

“This explains the custody strategy.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“If Mark knows he isn’t the biological father, he can’t claim parental rights easily.””

“So he created a case against me.””

“Yes.””

David looked furious.

“He wanted her taken away because he couldn’t keep her.””

Rachel nodded.

“And because he believed if Sarah lost custody, he could control the situation.””

I looked at the DNA report again.

Then something clicked.

A memory.

A moment I had forgotten.

The night I told Mark I was pregnant.

I had expected happiness.

Instead, he went silent.

Not shocked.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

I thought he was scared of becoming a father.

But he wasn’t.

He was scared of losing control.

“Who is the father?”” David asked.

Rachel looked at me.

“I think you know.””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She pulled out one final photograph.

My hands trembled before I even touched it.

Because I recognized the person standing beside me.

A man from my past.

Someone Mark hated.

Someone he accused me of secretly loving.

Someone he spent years trying to erase from my life.

My older friend.

My first love.

Ethan Walker.

I stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Rachel nodded.

“Mark knew.””

“How?””

“Because he found your old messages.””

My heart raced.

Messages from before Mark.

Before the marriage.

Before everything.

Ethan and I had dated briefly in college.

Then life separated us.

Years later, we reconnected at a charity event.

One conversation.

One mistake.

One night before I married Mark.

A night I never told anyone about.

Not because I loved Ethan.

Because I wanted that chapter of my life closed.

I had chosen Mark.

Or I thought I had.

Rachel continued.

“Mark found out about Ethan before your wedding.””

My breathing became shallow.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why marry me?””

Rachel looked at the folder.

“Because Mark didn’t want revenge.””

A pause.

“He wanted ownership.””

The word cut deeper than anything else.

Ownership.

That was what everything had been about.

The house.

The money.

The documents.

The baby.

Me.

Mark never loved me.

He collected me.

Three weeks later, Mark Mercer stood in court.

The same man who had once walked through every room like he owned it.

The same man who believed expensive suits could hide ugly truths.

Except now everyone knew.

The forged documents.

The financial fraud.

The manipulation.

The fake medical records.

The attempt to take control of my assets.

The witnesses he thought would stay silent.

My father testified.

My mother testified.

Daniel testified.

Rachel testified.

Even people I had never met came forward.

Because Mark had not destroyed one life.

He had damaged many.

When Mark saw me enter the courtroom, he looked different.

Not weaker.

Not sorry.

Just angry.

He still believed he had lost because people betrayed him.

Not because he had hurt them.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Then came the decision.

The documents were fraudulent.

The financial claims were dismissed.

The custody petition was denied.

And the investigation into Mark’s crimes continued.

After the hearing, I stepped outside.

The air was cold.

But it felt clean.

David stood beside me.

“You okay?””

I looked at the courthouse.

Then at my daughter’s ultrasound photo in my hand.

“Yes.””

For the first time in years, I meant it.

“What about Ethan?””

I smiled sadly.

“That’s a question for another day.””

Because some wounds don’t heal by immediately finding something new.

Some wounds heal when you finally stop letting the person who hurt you define your story.

Months later, my daughter was born.

I named her Lily.

Not because of Mark.

Not because of the past.

Because lilies grow after difficult seasons.

Because they survive.

The first time I held her, I cried.

Not because of everything I lost.

Because of everything I found.

My voice.

My courage.

My family.

Myself.

People ask me sometimes if I regret marrying Mark.

I used to think the answer was yes.

But now I know the truth.

I regret the years I spent believing love meant silence.

I regret every moment I ignored my own instincts.

But I don’t regret surviving.

Because the woman Mark tried to destroy became the woman he could never control.

May you like

And the biggest mistake he ever made…

was believing I would stay the same woman he married.
