Chapter 3: The Secret Sarah Left Behind

I stared at the six words until they stopped looking like words.

*“Marcus, do not trust Evelyn.””*

My wife’s name.

Written in my first wife’s handwriting.

On a piece of paper hidden beneath my daughter’s bed.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The kitchen disappeared around me.

The sunlight.

The furniture.

The sound of birds outside.

Everything faded, leaving only those six words burning in my mind.

Lily watched my face carefully.

“Daddy?””

I looked at her.

She looked scared.

Not because of the necklace.

Not because of the note.

Because she was watching me react.

And children always notice when the person they depend on suddenly becomes afraid.

I quickly folded the paper.

“Where exactly did you find this?””

She pointed toward the stairs.

“Under the loose board near my bed.””

“Loose board?””

She nodded.

“I thought something fell under there yesterday.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Evelyn said I wasn’t allowed to touch things in my room anymore.””

I closed my eyes.

Another piece of the puzzle.

Another thing I had ignored.

“Lily, I need you to show me.””

She grabbed my hand.

We walked upstairs together.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

The hallway looked the same.

Family pictures covered the walls.

Photos of vacations.

Birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

A perfect family displayed for anyone who walked through the door.

But now I wondered how many of those memories had hidden something darker.

Lily opened her bedroom door.

Her room was exactly how it had always been.

Pink curtains.

Stuffed animals.

Books stacked beside her bed.

The room of a little girl.

A safe place.

Except it hadn’t been safe.

Not for a while.

She walked to the corner near her bed and pointed.

“Here.””

I knelt down.

There was a small wooden panel beneath the carpet that looked slightly different from the others.

I touched it.

It moved.

My stomach tightened.

“Who knew about this?””

Lily shrugged.

“Mom showed me.””

My hand froze.

“Your mom?””

She nodded.

“She said it was our secret place.””

I slowly lifted the panel.

Inside was a small space.

Empty.

Except for one old envelope.

I reached inside.

The paper was aged.

Yellow.

The kind of paper that had been hidden for years.

My name was written on the front.

*Marcus.*

My hands shook.

Lily sat beside me.

“Is it from Mom?””

“Yes.””

“Should we open it?””

I looked at my daughter.

A part of me wanted to protect her from whatever was inside.

But another part knew she had already been living with secrets she never should have carried.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My wife’s handwriting filled the page.

My Sarah.

The woman who had loved Lily before she ever held her.

The woman who had trusted me with everything.

I began reading.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, something happened that stopped me from telling you this myself.

I stopped.

My chest tightened.

Lily leaned closer.

I continued.

First, I need you to know that I love you. I love Lily more than anything in this world. Every decision I made was because I wanted to protect her.

I swallowed hard.

When Evelyn entered our lives, I wanted to believe she was a good person. I wanted to believe Lily would have another woman who loved her.

My eyes moved faster.

But something changed.

The room felt colder.

At first, it was small things. Evelyn becoming uncomfortable when Lily talked about me. Evelyn getting angry when Marcus mentioned memories of our family. Evelyn asking questions about money, insurance, and what would happen if something happened to Marcus.

I stopped reading.

Money.

Insurance.

My fingers tightened around the letter.

Lily looked at me.

“What does it say?””

I didn’t answer.

I kept reading.

I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself grief was making me suspicious.

But then I found Evelyn searching through documents in Marcus’s office.

My heart dropped.

My office.

When I asked her what she was doing, she smiled and told me she was curious. But the feeling I had never left.

Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.

The next line was underlined.

Do not let Evelyn become Lily’s guardian if anything happens to me.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I read the sentence again.

And again.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

Sarah had been afraid.

Not of an accident.

Not of losing her life.

Of leaving Lily with Evelyn.

I kept reading.

I do not know what Evelyn wants. I do not know if she is simply jealous or if there is something more. But I know one thing.

She does not love Lily the way she claims.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Not because I was sad.

Because I was angry.

Angry at myself.

I had been so focused on rebuilding my life after losing Sarah that I failed to see what was happening right in front of me.

The letter continued.

I hid copies of certain documents because I did not know who I could trust. If you ever find this, look in the place where we kept our first anniversary photograph.

The truth is there.

The letter ended with one final sentence.

Please protect our daughter.

I lowered the paper.

The room was silent.

Lily looked at me.

“Daddy?””

I wiped my face.

“Yes?””

“Did Mom know Evelyn was bad?””

I looked at my eight-year-old daughter.

I hated that she even knew how to ask that question.

“I don’t know yet.””

“But you believe me now?””

The pain in her voice nearly broke me.

I reached out.

“I should have believed you before.””

She looked down.

“I tried telling you.””

“I know.””

“No, Daddy.””

Her voice cracked.

“You didn’t hear me.””

That hurt because it was true.

I had heard her words.

But I hadn’t listened.

I pulled her into my arms.

“I’m listening now.””

A few minutes later, my phone buzzed.

I checked the screen.

A message from my divorce lawyer.

*Marcus, I reviewed the initial information. We need to talk immediately. There are financial concerns involving Evelyn that you should know about.*

Financial concerns.

The same thing Sarah had written about.

I stood up.

“Lily, I need you to stay here for a little while.””

Her face changed instantly.

“Are you leaving?””

“No.””

I sat beside her.

“I am not leaving you.””

“Promise?””

I held her hand.

“Promise.””

But before I could walk away, there was a knock downstairs.

Not a normal knock.

Three slow knocks.

Like whoever was outside knew exactly when I would hear them.

Lily looked toward the door.

“Who is that?””

I didn’t know.

But something inside me already felt uneasy.

I walked downstairs.

When I opened the door, I found Amanda standing there.

Sarah’s old friend.

The woman who had called me minutes earlier.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was holding a thick folder.

Her face was pale.

“Marcus.””

“What happened?””

She looked past me into the house.

“Is Lily here?””

“Yes.””

Amanda took a deep breath.

“I need you to hear this before Evelyn gets back.””

My heart stopped.

“Gets back?””

Amanda looked at me.

“She’s coming here.””

“What?””

“She called me last night.””

“Why?””

Amanda tightened her grip on the folder.

“Because she knows I talked to you.””

The air between us changed.

“What’s in that folder?””

Amanda looked at the stairs.

Then back at me.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Proof that Sarah was right.””

I opened the folder.

The first page was a photograph.

A photograph of Evelyn.

Standing outside a lawyer’s office.

Three years ago.

The same month Sarah died.

And underneath the picture was a document title that made my hands go numb.

*Emergency Custody Petition — Prepared for Marcus Hale’s Daughter, Lily Hale.*

May you like

But the signature at the bottom wasn’t mine.

It was Evelyn’s.
