Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Elena Voss
Brock Hayes stared at the file in his hands.
The words refused to make sense.
*ELENA VOSS — ORIGINAL PROJECT ECHO SUBJECT.*
Not victim.
Not investigator.
Not someone caught inside the system.
The subject.
The room seemed to tilt.
For years, he had imagined Elena as someone who needed saving.
Someone he failed to protect.
Someone stolen from him.
But now General Adrian Cross was standing in front of him, telling him the woman he loved was the beginning of everything.
Brock looked up.
“You’re lying.””
Cross didn’t react.
“I expected you to say that.””
“You’ve manipulated everything.””
“No.””
Cross stepped closer.
“You have been manipulated.””
Brock tightened his grip on the file.
“Explain.””
Cross looked toward the screen behind him.
“Six years ago, you discovered the truth about Elena Voss.””
Brock’s eyes narrowed.
“What truth?””
“That she was never just a scientist.””
Cross paused.
“She was the first successful subject of Project Echo.””
Brock shook his head.
“No.””
“You know I’m telling the truth.””
“I don’t.””
“You do.””
And that was the worst part.
Because something inside Brock recognized the words.
Not as facts.
As memories trying to return.
The warehouse lights flickered.
The old video system activated again.
A recording appeared.
Brock knew immediately.
His younger self.
Six years earlier.
But this time, Elena was there.
She stood across from him.
The same woman from the photograph.
The same woman who claimed to be his wife.
But she looked different.
Not afraid.
Not hunted.
Confident.
The younger Brock spoke first.
“You promised me you were done.””
Elena looked at him.
“I tried.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Her voice was calm.
“It’s the truth.””
The younger Brock paced.
“You built the system.””
“I built the first version.””
“And then?””
“I lost control.””
Current Brock watched silently.
Cross stood beside him.
“Keep watching.””
The video continued.
Elena looked exhausted.
“I thought I could create something that would help people survive trauma.””
The younger Brock stared at her.
“By changing their memories?””
“By reducing pain.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Elena looked down.
“But people with power changed the purpose.””
Brock watched.
Because this sounded like the Elena he remembered.
Not the woman Cross described.
The woman who questioned everything.
The woman who wanted to protect people.
The younger Brock said:
“Then why didn’t you destroy it?””
Elena was silent.
Then:
“Because I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because I was the proof it worked.””
The recording stopped.
Brock looked at Cross.
“That proves nothing.””
Cross nodded.
“No.””
He pointed to the file.
“But this does.””
Brock opened the next page.
A medical report.
Patient information.
Most of it was classified.
But one line was visible.
*Memory modification successful.*
Subject name:
*Elena Voss.*
Brock’s eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The date.
The procedure happened before he met her.
Before their marriage.
Before Lily.
He looked up.
“You’re saying Elena’s memories were altered first.””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Cross answered immediately.
“Me.””
The honesty surprised him.
Brock stared.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
Cross looked tired.
“I expect you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Elena was never just hiding from Project Echo.””
Cross stepped closer.
“She was hiding from what she became after it.””
Brock left the warehouse after midnight.
Not because he believed Cross.
Because he needed answers.
And Cross had given him something worse than a lie.
A possibility.
Avery and Mason were waiting near the vehicle.
The moment Brock approached, Avery saw his expression.
“What happened?””
Brock handed her the file.
She read the cover.
Her face changed.
“You found it.””
“You knew.””
Avery looked at him.
“No.””
“You knew Elena was connected.””
“Yes.””
“You didn’t tell me.””
“Because I didn’t know if it was true.””
Brock looked at her.
“What else don’t you know?””
Avery didn’t answer.
That was becoming the most frustrating thing about her.
She always told the truth.
But never all of it.
Mason stepped forward.
“What did Cross tell you?””
Brock looked at him.
“You knew he was involved.””
Mason nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I couldn’t.””
Brock laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked between them.
“Everyone had a reason.””
His voice became colder.
“But everyone still lied.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew he was right.
They returned to the base and analyzed the files.
For hours.
Patterns appeared.
Names.
Connections.
Old missions.
Old decisions.
Then Avery found something.
“Wait.””
Brock looked over.
“What?””
She enlarged a document.
A timeline.
Project Echo.
Elena.
Brock.
Lily.
And one event.
A date six years earlier.
“The day you erased your memory.””
Brock nodded.
“What about it?””
Avery pointed.
“You weren’t the only one who underwent the procedure.””
Silence.
Brock looked closer.
Another name appeared.
*ELENA VOSS.*
His face changed.
“She forgot too.””
Avery nodded.
“Yes.””
Brock looked at Mason.
“You knew?””
Mason shook his head.
“No.””
Avery continued.
“She didn’t remember everything either.””
Brock stared.
“Then how did she call me?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question.
If Elena’s memory was altered…
If Brock’s memory was altered…
How did she know?
Then Parker entered the room.
“Commander.””
Brock turned.
“What?””
Parker looked nervous.
“We found something.””
“What?””
“A hidden transmission from the archive.””
Avery immediately stood.
“From who?””
Parker hesitated.
Then:
“Elena.””
Brock froze.
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
“No.””
Parker nodded.
“Yes.””
He placed the recording on the table.
They played it.
Elena’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, then both of us have forgotten.””
Brock closed his eyes.
Her voice.
The same voice.
Older.
Tired.
But still hers.
“I don’t know who will find this.””
A pause.
“I don’t know what I will believe.””
Brock looked at Avery.
Because Elena sounded afraid.
Not of enemies.
Of herself.
The recording continued.
“But there is one thing I need Brock to know.””
The room became silent.
“I did not create Project Echo to control people.””
Another pause.
“I created it because I was trying to save someone.””
Brock leaned forward.
“Who?””
Elena answered.
“My daughter.””
The room went still.
Avery looked confused.
Mason frowned.
Brock whispered:
“Lily.””
The recording continued.
“Lily was born with something that made her different.””
Brock’s heart started racing.
Not illness.
Not weakness.
Something else.
“She could remember things other people couldn’t.””
The room fell silent.
“Memories that were erased.””
Brock looked at the screen.
Elena continued:
“Project Echo was created because I discovered the human brain could store information beyond normal recall.””
A pause.
“Lily proved it.””
Brock felt cold.
His daughter.
The reason.
The center of everything.
Elena’s voice shook.
“And that is why they wanted her.””
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then another file opened automatically.
A security image appeared.
A little girl.
Older now.
Standing in a room.
A man beside her.
Brock stared.
Because he knew the man.
General Cross.
The image date was recent.
Taken three days ago.
Avery whispered:
“Lily is with him.””
Brock felt anger explode.
“He has my daughter.””
Then the image changed.
A message appeared.
Not from Cross.
Not from Elena.
From Lily.
The text was short.
Written in a child’s handwriting.
*Daddy, I remember you.*
Brock stopped breathing.
Then another line appeared.
*But I don’t think you remember me because Mommy made you forget.*
The room went silent.
Brock looked at Avery.
At Mason.
At the impossible truth unfolding.
The person who erased his memories.
The person who protected him.
The person who had hidden the truth.
Might not have been Cross.
Might not have been Mason.
Might not have been Project Echo.
It might have been Elena.
And then one final message appeared.
*Come find me before Mommy does.*
Brock stared.
Because suddenly the mission had changed.
He wasn’t searching for the truth anymore.
May you like
He was searching for his daughter.
Before the woman he loved reached her first.
