Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Plan
I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.
Then I turned it back on.
The image was still there.
The missing envelope.
David’s handwriting visible on the front.
My name written underneath.
Someone wanted me to know they had it.
Someone wanted me afraid.
But they made one mistake.
They reminded me of something.
I had spent my entire life fighting for my family.
Fear had never stopped me before.
It wasn’t going to start now.
I showed the message to Thomas.
His face changed immediately.
“They have the letter.””
“Yes.””
“Evelyn, you need to be careful.””
“I’ve been careful for twelve years.””
He shook his head.
“No. You’ve been protecting people.””
The words stayed with me.
Because he was right.
I had protected Marcus.
Protected David’s legacy.
Protected the company.
Protected everyone except myself.
“Where is Richard?”” I asked.
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
“Find out.””
“Evelyn—”
“Please.””
He saw something in my face.
Something different.
Not the grieving wife.
Not the mother begging her son to love her.
A woman who was done being silent.
“Give me a day,” he said.
That evening, Marcus came back.
This time, he didn’t knock.
He used the key.
The same key I had given him when he was twenty-two.
The same key he had never returned.
I watched him enter.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he looked at me.
“You changed the locks.””
“Yes.””
His expression hurt.
“Really?””
I stared at him.
“You broke into my life, Marcus.””
His face fell.
“I didn’t.””
“No?””
“No.””
“Then why are you using a key to enter a house where you’re no longer welcome?””
The words hurt both of us.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t take them back.
Marcus looked away.
“I came to apologize.””
I didn’t expect that.
He sat down.
“I shouldn’t have done what I did at the church.””
I remained standing.
“Why did you?””
He swallowed.
“I thought I was protecting Claire.””
There it was.
Not me.
Not himself.
Claire.
“From what?””
He looked frustrated.
“I don’t know anymore.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What happened?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“After I read Dad’s letter, I started asking questions.””
“And?””
“And Claire got angry.””
I stayed quiet.
“She said your family always hated her.””
“My family?””
“She said you never accepted her.””
I almost smiled.
“Did you?””
He looked at me.
“What?””
“Did you ever ask me?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
He never did.
Marcus reached into his pocket.
“I found something.””
He placed a small USB drive on the table.
“What is that?””
“Claire’s laptop.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
“I didn’t steal it.””
“I didn’t ask.””
“She left it at the house.””
“And?””
“And I saw something.””
He looked ashamed.
“I shouldn’t have looked.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
“What did you find?””
He stared at the USB.
“Emails.””
“Between who?””
His voice became quiet.
“Claire and Richard.””
The room went silent.
I sat down slowly.
“What did they say?””
Marcus looked at me.
“They talked about the company.””
“Only the company?””
He hesitated.
“No.””
“What else?””
He looked away.
“They talked about me.””
My heart broke for him.
Not because he was innocent.
Because he was finally seeing the truth.
“What did they say?””
Marcus’s eyes became red.
“She called me predictable.””
I said nothing.
“She said I was easy to control because I wanted Dad’s approval.””
I closed my eyes.
“And Richard?””
“He said once I took over the company, everything would belong to them.””
Everything.
The word echoed.
I reached for the USB.
“Did you copy all of it?””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Mom…”
I met his eyes.
“Do you believe me now?””
He looked down.
That hurt more than anger.
Because he knew he had been wrong.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was quiet.
Almost broken.
I wanted to hug him.
Every part of me wanted to.
But I remembered the church doors closing.
I remembered standing alone.
“I need more than an apology, Marcus.””
“I know.””
“You need to understand what you did.””
“I do.””
“No.””
My voice softened.
“You understand what Claire did.””
He looked at me.
“But you still haven’t understood what you did to me.””
His eyes filled.
And for the first time in months, my son looked like my son.
“I’m sorry, Mom.””
I believed he meant it.
But before I could answer, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t respond.
“Marcus?””
He turned the phone toward me.
It was Claire.
Calling.
Then a message appeared.
*I know you found the files.*
Marcus went pale.
A second message arrived.
*Now I know what your mother has been hiding.*
I looked at my son.
“What does she mean?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, another message appeared.
This one had an attachment.
A scanned document.

The title alone made my heart stop.
