Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Punishment
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not even Evelyn.
The only sound in the room was Noah’s crying.
Small, broken sobs that seemed to echo louder than the shouting that had filled the house moments before.
Daniel looked at me.
Then at his mother.
Then back at Noah.
I waited.
I waited for him to ask if our son was okay.
I waited for him to run to Noah and pick him up.
I waited for him to look at Evelyn and demand an explanation.
Instead, he said the one thing I never expected.
“What is she talking about?””
My heart sank.
“Daniel…”
His eyes stayed on me.
“What is my mother talking about?””
I stared at him, unable to believe this was happening.
“My mother?”” I whispered.
I looked around the room.
“Your mother just hurt our son.””
Evelyn immediately gasped.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Enough to make herself look wounded.
“Daniel, I can’t believe she would say something like that after everything I’ve done for this family.””
I felt something inside me break.
“Are you serious?””
Evelyn placed a hand over her chest.
“I have spent weeks helping with Noah. Cooking for him. Picking him up from school. Taking care of him while you both work.””
I laughed once.
A sharp, humorless sound.
“Taking care of him?””
Daniel looked between us.
“Can someone please explain what happened?””
I stepped forward.
“Your mother forced Noah to kneel on the floor because he spilled juice.””
Daniel’s eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“She made him rub her ankles as punishment.””
“That’s not what happened,” Evelyn said quickly.
I turned toward her.
“I was there.””
“You saw one moment.””
“No. I saw my son crying on the floor.””
Evelyn shook her head sadly.
“This is exactly the problem.””
“What problem?””
“She exaggerates everything.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Because they sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
I remembered every time I had told Daniel I felt uncomfortable with his mother moving into our home.
Every time he had told me I was “overreacting.””
Every time Evelyn had smiled and said, “She just doesn’t understand how close we are.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Mom, did you make Noah kneel?””
Evelyn looked offended.
“I asked him to apologize.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She hesitated.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Daniel saw it too.
“He was disrespectful,” Evelyn said.
Noah’s crying stopped.
He looked up.
“Grandma said I was bad.””
My chest tightened.
Daniel looked at him.
“Buddy, come here.””
Noah didn’t move.
That hurt more than anything.
My five-year-old son, who used to run into Daniel’s arms every time he came home, was now afraid to move.
“Daddy won’t be mad,” Daniel said softly.
Noah looked at me first.
Then slowly walked toward him.
Daniel picked him up.
The second he was in his father’s arms, Noah buried his face into Daniel’s shoulder.
“She stepped on my hand,” he whispered.
The room went completely silent.
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Noah’s voice shook.
“Grandma stepped on my hand because I got up.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
And for the first time that night, I saw doubt on his face.
“Mom?””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Noah is confused.””
I stared at her.
“Confused?””
“He’s five.””
“He knows what happened.””
“You’re filling his head with accusations.””
My jaw dropped.
“Are you blaming me?””
“I’m saying you’re emotional.””
That was when Daniel finally spoke.
“Mom.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
But serious.
“Did you step on his hand?””
Evelyn looked at him.
And for a moment, I thought she might tell the truth.
Instead, she sighed.
“I was trying to stop him from running away.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked away.
“I may have accidentally stepped on him.””
Noah whimpered.
Accidentally.
That word.
That one word made me feel sick.
I walked toward Daniel.
“Look at his hand.””
Daniel looked down.
Noah’s fingers were already swelling.
A small red mark crossed the back of his hand.
The sight changed something in Daniel’s face.
His arms tightened around our son.
But then Evelyn spoke.
“Daniel, before you judge me, you should know why I was disciplining him.””
I turned around.
“What?””
She looked directly at him.
“Ask your wife why Noah was really being punished.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Again.
That same confusion.
That same uncertainty.
I felt like I was watching someone slowly convince my husband that I was the enemy.
“There was a reason?”” Daniel asked.
I stared at him.
“Daniel, don’t do this.””
“Just answer me.””
“Your mother hurt our son.””
“And I’m asking why.””
“Because he spilled juice?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
The room became colder.
Daniel looked at her.
“What are you saying?””
Evelyn walked toward the coffee table.
Slowly.
Calmly.
Like she was presenting evidence in court.
She picked up her phone.
“I wasn’t going to tell you.””
My stomach twisted.
“Tell him what?””
She tapped the screen.
“I found something.””
Daniel looked at her phone.
“What?””
Evelyn held it out.
“I found this in Noah’s backpack.””
Daniel took the phone.
I couldn’t see the screen from where I stood.
But his face changed.
“What is that?””
I stepped closer.
“Daniel, let me see.””
He didn’t move.
And that hurt.
“Daniel.””
His eyes lifted toward mine.
“What is this?””
I looked at the screen.
And my blood went cold.
It was a photo.
A screenshot.
A conversation.
My conversation.
But not the whole thing.
Only a small part.
A sentence.
One sentence taken completely out of context.
I felt my stomach drop.
“Where did you get that?””
Evelyn smiled faintly.
“From Noah’s tablet.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, you don’t have access to his tablet.””
“I do. I’m his grandmother.””
“You went through his things?””
“I was protecting him.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Don’t listen to this.””
But Daniel was staring at the screen.
“What does this mean?””
“It doesn’t mean what she thinks.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“That’s what everyone says when they get caught.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You manipulated a screenshot.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Manipulated?””
“Yes.””
I pointed at the phone.
“That’s part of a conversation. Not the entire thing.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You always have an excuse.””
“No. I have the truth.””
Daniel lowered the phone.
“Then tell me.””
I opened my mouth.
And stopped.
Because I realized something.
Something I should have noticed earlier.
The screenshot wasn’t the worst part.
The worst part was how Evelyn got it.
She had been searching.
Looking.
Waiting.
For something she could use against me.
“I need my laptop,” I said.
Daniel frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I can show you the entire conversation.””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“You deleted it already, didn’t you?””
I looked at her.
And suddenly, I understood.
This wasn’t about Noah spilling juice.
This wasn’t about discipline.
This was planned.
She wanted Daniel to come home at this exact moment.
She wanted him to see chaos.
She wanted him to doubt me.
“Where were you?”” I asked.
Everyone went quiet.
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
“When did you take this screenshot?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Mom?””
She looked at him.
“I don’t remember.””
I almost smiled.
Because there it was.
The first crack.
“You don’t remember something you were so worried about?””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re attacking me instead of answering the question.””
“No. I’m asking why you were looking through our son’s private things.””
“He’s my grandson.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Mom?””
Evelyn sighed.
“Fine.””
She sat down.
“I saw something concerning.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your wife has been telling people that I’m dangerous around Noah.””
Daniel turned toward me.
My heart stopped.
“I never said that.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Exactly what she would say.””
I stared at Daniel.
“Do you believe her?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence hurt more than if he had.
Because doubt was already there.
And Evelyn knew it.
She always knew exactly where to place the knife.
I took a deep breath.
“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””
“I am.””
“No. You’re listening to her.””
His face tightened.
“Because she’s showing me things I didn’t know.””
I looked at my son.
Then at the woman who had hurt him.
Then at my husband.
“I have spent months trying to tell you something was wrong.””
Daniel looked away.
“And now you’re finally listening.””
The words hung between us.
Evelyn stood.
“I think we should talk without Noah here.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I held my son’s hand.
“He stays with me.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“See? Controlling.””
“No. Protective.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I need to understand what’s going on.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then ask the right person.””
His eyes met mine.
“Who?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“The person who had to hurt a child to prove a point.””
Evelyn’s face went cold.
And then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
For the first time all night…
she looked nervous.
She quickly turned the phone away.
But not before I saw the name.
A name I didn’t recognize.
A name that made my skin crawl.
Because beneath it was a message preview.
*“Did Daniel believe you?””*
I looked up.
May you like
Evelyn was staring at me.
And she knew I had seen it.
