Chapter 8: The Name on the Trust
Aaliyah read Ethan's name three times.
Each time, she expected the letters to rearrange themselves into something else.
They didn't.
*NEW BENEFICIARY: ETHAN COLE.*
She looked at the date.
The designation had been changed eleven years earlier, when she was twelve.
Ethan would have been thirteen.
It made no sense.
She had met him at university, almost a decade after that date. They had started dating when she was twenty-two. He had proposed two years later, on a beach where the wind had nearly blown the ring box into the ocean.
How could his name have appeared on a financial document connected to her childhood?
“Marcus,” she whispered.
He moved beside her.
“What is it?””
She turned the laptop toward him.
He read the document without touching the keyboard.
His expression changed slowly.
“That can't be right.””
“It's dated eleven years ago.””
“Then we need to verify the document.””
Aaliyah scrolled down.
The form contained a signature, a witness line, and the name of the financial institution holding the trust.
The signature looked like hers.
Not exactly, but close enough to make her stomach twist.
She had spent years signing permission slips, school forms, and birthday cards. Her handwriting at twelve had been uneven, with oversized letters and a habit of curling the tail of every lowercase y.
The signature on the document had the same distinctive curl.
“Did I sign this?”” she asked.
Marcus studied the page.
“I don't know.””
“I don't remember signing anything like it.””
“Then don't assume the document is genuine until we know more.””
Aaliyah looked at the signature again.
Her phone rang.
Ethan.
She answered immediately.
“Ethan, I need you to come upstairs.””
“What's happened? Emily says the ceremony is delayed.””
“I found something.””
“What kind of something?””
“Your name is on a trust document.””
Silence.
Aaliyah's fingers tightened around the phone.
“Ethan?””
“What trust document?””
“My father's trust account. The one he supposedly opened when I was six.””
He exhaled.
“Where did you get that?””
“An email from the financial adviser.””
“Don't send me anything until we talk in person.””
“Why?””
“Because I need to understand what you're looking at.””
She stood.
“Then come upstairs.””
“I will.””
The call ended.
Marcus watched her carefully.
“Do you think Ethan knew about the account?””
“I don't know.””
“Has he ever mentioned Robert?””
“Only when I told him I wanted to find him.””
“Did he know you were talking to him?””
“Yes.””
“Did you tell him Robert wanted to walk you down the aisle?””
Aaliyah nodded.
“What did he say?””
“He told me it was my decision. He said he understood why I wanted to know my biological father.””
Marcus looked at the document again.
“Then we need to hear what he has to say.””
Aaliyah paced toward the window.
She remembered telling Ethan about her childhood, about the birthdays when she had waited for a phone call that never came. He had listened without interrupting. He had held her hand and told her that she deserved answers.
He had encouraged her to reconnect with Robert.
He had also been the one who suggested that she invite Robert to the wedding.
At the time, she'd thought Ethan was simply supporting her.
Now every memory seemed to have a shadow.
The door opened.
Ethan stepped inside, still wearing his charcoal wedding suit. His tie was slightly crooked, and his hair had fallen across his forehead.
He looked at Aaliyah first.
“Baby, are you okay?””
She held up the document.
“Why is your name on my trust account?””
His eyes moved to the screen.
For one brief moment, his face went completely blank.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Where did you get this?””
Aaliyah's heart sank.
“That's the second time someone has asked me that instead of answering the question.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“I'm trying to understand.””
“Then explain why your name is here.””
He studied the document.
“I've never seen this before.””
“Have you ever had access to money from my father's trust?””
“No.””
“Have you ever met Daniel Whitmore?””
“No.””
“Did you know Robert before I introduced you?””
Ethan looked genuinely startled.
“Of course not.””
“Then why is your name on a document from when I was twelve?””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“I don't know.””
Marcus folded his arms.
“Ethan, look at the signature.””
Ethan leaned closer.
His expression shifted.
“That isn't Aaliyah's signature.””
She stared at him.
“How can you tell?””
“Because I've seen you sign things for years. This looks wrong.””
“You're sure?””
“No. But it doesn't look right.””
Aaliyah looked at Marcus.
He nodded slowly.
“That's why we need the original records.””
Ethan took her hands.
“Listen to me. I know this is frightening, but don't let Robert turn this into another way to manipulate you.””
Aaliyah pulled away.
“Why are you assuming Robert did it?””
“Because he's the one who told you about the money.””
“He didn't tell me about the beneficiary change. Daniel did.””
Ethan's mouth tightened.
“Then Daniel needs to explain why he's sending you a document like this on your wedding day.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“That's fair. We'll ask him.””
Ethan glanced at the clock.
“The ceremony is supposed to start in a few minutes. Do you want to postpone it?””
Aaliyah looked at him.
He seemed calm. Concerned. Reasonable.
He was the man who had helped her choose the engagement ring, who brought her coffee when she worked late, who had once driven forty minutes through a storm because she'd forgotten her medication at his apartment.
She wanted to believe him.
But she couldn't ignore the way he had reacted to the document.
“Did you know Robert was going to confront Marcus about the settlement today?”” she asked.
Ethan blinked.
“What?””
“Robert brought an email about the wedding and money Marcus supposedly owed him.””
“No.””
“Did you know Robert had asked Mom for a loan last month?””
“No.””
“Did you know about the eighty-five thousand dollars?””
Ethan looked toward Marcus.
“I heard some of it just now.””
Aaliyah stepped back.
“Why do you keep looking at him when I'm asking you questions?””
“Because he's been accusing everyone of things all afternoon.””
“I'm asking you, Ethan.””
He took a slow breath.
“No. I didn't know about the money. I didn't know about the trust. And I have never had access to anything that belongs to you.””
His answer sounded sincere.
Aaliyah hated that she couldn't tell whether it was.
Then her phone rang again.
Daniel Whitmore.
She put the call on speaker.
“Mr. Whitmore, this is Aaliyah Hayes. I'm looking at the document you sent me.””
“Thank you for calling,” he replied. His voice was measured, professional.
“Before we discuss anything else, I need to clarify that the document you received is a copy of a beneficiary-change request. It is not proof that the change was approved.””
Aaliyah's knees weakened with relief.
“So Ethan may not actually be the beneficiary?””
“Correct. The document was flagged because the signature and witness information did not match the account's original records. The institution never completed the change.””
Ethan exhaled.
“Thank God.””
But Daniel continued.
“The concern is that the request was submitted when Ms. Hayes was a minor. We need to determine who submitted it and whether any related transactions occurred.””
Marcus leaned toward the phone.
“Was any money withdrawn?””
“I cannot confirm that from the preliminary document alone. I have requested the historical ledger and authorization records.””
“How long will that take?”” Aaliyah asked.
“I'm working to obtain them today. There is one additional issue.””
Aaliyah gripped the phone.
“What issue?””
“The request was accompanied by a letter claiming that Aaliyah had been informed of the proposed change and had given her consent.””
She looked at Ethan.
He stared back at her.
“Who signed the letter?”” Marcus asked.
Daniel paused.
“The signature is illegible on the copy, but the return address belongs to a law office that closed more than a decade ago.””
Aaliyah swallowed.
“Can you send me the original submission?””
“I can send you the available copies. However, I want you to understand that we have not established fraud, and we haven't established that any funds were transferred to Mr. Cole.””
“Please send everything.””
“I will.””
The call ended.
Ethan sat down.
“Someone may have forged your signature and used my name,” he said.
“That doesn't mean I did anything.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
Aaliyah looked at him.
“I want to.””
He reached for her hand, but she didn't take it.
For the first time in their relationship, the distance between them felt deliberate.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and slowly turned toward Aaliyah.
“It's Daniel,” he said.
“He has found a second document.””
Aaliyah stood.
“What does it say?””
Marcus lowered the phone.
“The trust account was closed when you were eighteen.””
Her breath caught.
“Where did the money go?””
Marcus listened again.
His face went pale.
Then he looked at Ethan.
“According to the records, the remaining balance was transferred into a custodial account established by a person with power of attorney over the trust.””
Aaliyah could barely speak.
“Who?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Denise.””
May you like
Her mother made a small, broken sound from the doorway.
And when Aaliyah turned toward her, Denise whispered, “I can explain why I did it.””
