Chapter 6: The Brother Who Never Came Home

By dawn, I had stopped trying to convince myself that any of this was a misunderstanding.

Martin had been taken to a hospital under police protection. Daniel was coordinating a forensic audit of Carter Automotive's historical accounts, and the detectives had begun tracing the shell companies named in Eleanor's files.

Vanessa sat in the back of my car, staring at her hands.

Neither of us had spoken for nearly twenty minutes.

Finally, she broke the silence.

“Do you hate me?””

I kept my eyes on the road.

“That depends on what else you're hiding.””

She flinched.

“I told you everything I know.””

“No. You told me everything you think you can admit without making yourself look worse.””

She turned toward the window.

“I deserve that.””

I didn't answer.

At a red light, she spoke again.

“When Richard first approached me, he said he knew you were going to fail. He told me your business was built on bad loans and that you'd eventually lose everything. He said he wanted to protect me from being dragged down with you.””

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked at me, her eyes swollen from crying.

“Because I was tired of being afraid every time a bill arrived. Because I wanted a house where the roof didn't leak and a car that started every morning. Because I was embarrassed when my friends talked about their vacations and I had to explain why we couldn't afford one.””

I remembered those years.

The cold mornings in the garage. The nights spent balancing invoices. The way she used to bring me coffee when I worked late, sitting on a stool beside the tool cabinet while I explained my plans.

“I wasn't asking you to live that way forever,” I said.

“I know that now.””

“No, Vanessa. You know it because you saw the Rolls-Royce. You saw the dealerships. You saw the company you once believed would never amount to anything.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“That's not fair.””

“Neither was spending ten years believing I wasn't good enough because I couldn't make you rich quickly enough.””

She stared down at her hands.

For a moment, I saw the woman I had married rather than the stranger who had mocked me in the hotel lobby.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

“James, we've recovered part of Eleanor's video.””

“Play it.””

“There's something you need to know first. The video contains information about a meeting that took place three years ago. We believe it was recorded inside Carter Automotive's old headquarters.””

“Who was at the meeting?””

“We're still verifying the footage. But Eleanor names three people.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Richard Whitmore. Martin Shaw. And your brother.””

My grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“Michael?””

“Yes.””

“Where was the meeting?””

“An office on Peachtree Street. We traced the building records, and the property is currently registered to a company called Brooks Meridian.””

I frowned.

“Brooks Meridian?””

“It's a holding company incorporated under Eleanor's name. The company was dissolved six months after her reported death, but someone renewed its registration last week.””

I pulled into a parking lot.

“Who renewed it?””

“An attorney using a power of attorney that appears to have been signed by Eleanor.””

I closed my eyes.

“Send me the address.””

“I already have. James, there's one more detail. The attorney's name is Michael Carter.””

I stared at the phone.

My brother wasn't merely alive.

He was actively using a company registered under Eleanor's name.

And he had signed documents on her behalf after her death.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “find him.””

Brooks Meridian occupied the third floor of a narrow office building between a tax preparation service and a closed dental clinic.

The lobby smelled of dust and old carpet. A security guard sat behind a scratched reception desk, watching a television with the sound turned down.

I approached him.

“I'm looking for Michael Carter.””

The guard glanced at a visitor log.

“Do you have an appointment?””

“No.””

“Then I'm afraid I can't help you.””

I placed my business card on the desk.

“Tell him James is here.””

The guard looked at the card, then at my face.

His expression changed.

“Please wait.””

He disappeared through a door behind the reception desk.

Daniel stood beside me, speaking quietly with the two officers assigned to our protection. Vanessa remained outside in the car, under police supervision.

After several minutes, the guard returned.

“He says he'll see you.””

The office beyond the door was dimly lit. Filing cabinets lined one wall, and stacks of unopened mail covered a conference table.

Michael stood beside the window.

He looked older than I remembered. His hair had thinned, and his face seemed drawn, but the scar above his eyebrow was unmistakable.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then he smiled sadly.

“Hello, little brother.””

I felt anger rise so quickly that I had to remind myself why I had come.

“Don't call me that.””

His smile disappeared.

“James—”

“Are you dead?””

He blinked.

“What?””

“Richard told Vanessa you were dead. You haven't contacted me in two years. You've been signing documents under Eleanor's name.

So I'll ask again. Are you dead?””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“No.””

“Then why did you let me believe you were gone?””

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“That's what everyone says when they get caught lying.””

Michael walked to the conference table and pulled out a chair.

“Sit down.””

“I'd rather stand.””

He nodded slowly.

“Fair enough.””

I placed the photograph of him outside the hospital on the table.

“Three days ago. Where were you?””

He looked at it.

“Visiting someone.””

“Eleanor?””

His face changed.

I stepped closer.

“Did you see Eleanor?””

Michael said nothing.

“Did you know she was investigating the money being stolen from my company?””

“Yes.””

The word came out so quietly that I almost missed it.

My chest tightened.

“How long have you known?””

“Ten years.””

I stared at him.

“Ten years?””

He nodded.

“Eleanor came to me after she discovered the first fraudulent payments. She thought someone was using your accounts to finance an acquisition that didn't exist.””

“Why didn't she come to me?””

“She tried. But Richard had already convinced her that you were involved.””

“She knew me better than that.””

“She wanted to believe that. But the evidence was convincing. Someone had forged your signature on documents, and the money was moving through companies linked to people you trusted.””

“Like you?””

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

The room seemed to shrink around us.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“You stole from me?””

“I helped move money.””

“That's a very careful way of saying you stole from me.””

He swallowed.

“I was drowning in debt. Richard offered me a way out. He said he could use our father's old property holdings to secure a loan, and that the money would be repaid before you noticed anything.””

“How much?””

Michael looked away.

“Almost two million dollars over four years.””

I felt something inside me go cold.

Two million dollars.

Money that could have paid off the repair shop's debts, hired additional mechanics, and expanded the business years earlier.

Instead, I had worked through nights, skipped vacations, and nearly lost everything while my own brother helped siphon away the resources that could have made those struggles unnecessary.

“You watched me fight to keep the company alive,” I said.

Michael's shoulders slumped.

“Yes.””

“You watched me borrow money from suppliers.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me work fourteen hours a day because I couldn't afford to hire enough people.””

He began crying.

“I'm sorry.””

I struck the table with my palm.

“Don't tell me you're sorry!””

He recoiled.

“You don't get to apologize for ten years of betrayal and expect that word to repair anything.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't. Because if you knew, you would have come to me before someone threatened to kill Eleanor.””

Michael covered his face.

For a moment, I wanted to leave him there.

Then I remembered the photograph.

“Did you kill Eleanor?””

His hands dropped.

“No.””

“Did you help someone kill her?””

“No.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

Michael took a long breath.

“Three years ago, Eleanor discovered that Richard had been using the stolen money to finance a hostile takeover of Carter Automotive. He planned to force the company into bankruptcy, buy its assets through a separate holding company, and sell the dealerships for a fortune.””

I stared at him.

“But the company survived.””

“Because you kept paying the debts. Because you kept finding investors. Because you refused to surrender.””

“Who was supposed to sign the final acquisition agreement?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“You.””

I felt sick.

“They intended to make it look like I had sold my company willingly?””

“Yes. The forged signatures were only the beginning. Richard planned to use your own authorization records to show that you had approved every transfer.””

“And Eleanor found out.””

“She found the original contracts. She confronted Richard, and he threatened her. Then she called me.””

“What did she say?””

Michael looked at me with hollow eyes.

“She said she had evidence that could destroy all of us.””

“All of us?””

“Richard. Me. And someone else.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

“Vanessa.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What did Vanessa do?””

Michael rubbed his hands together.

“She didn't start the scheme. But Richard used her to create a second trail of payments. When the money was transferred through Northbridge Holdings, it appeared that she was receiving compensation for helping arrange the acquisition.””

“Did she know?””

“I don't know how much she knew at the beginning. But by the time Eleanor confronted her, Vanessa understood that the payments weren't legitimate.””

I remembered Vanessa's trembling hands in the security office.

Her confession about the consulting agreement.

Her insistence that she hadn't understood the money.

“Why would Eleanor keep this from me?””

“Because she was afraid you'd try to protect Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“That makes no sense.””

Michael shook his head.

“Eleanor believed you still loved her. She knew you had never stopped caring about Vanessa, even after the divorce. She thought that if you learned the truth, you might confront Richard before the evidence was secured.””

“And what happened to Eleanor?””

Michael looked toward the closed office door.

“She disappeared for two days. When she came back, she told me she had arranged to meet someone who could help her expose the scheme. She said that if anything happened, I was to give you a recording.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't have it.””

“Then who does?””

Michael's face tightened.

“Eleanor gave it to Vanessa.””

I stared at him.

“Why would she trust Vanessa?””

“Because Vanessa was the only person Richard hadn't completely controlled.””

I let out a disbelieving breath.

“Vanessa helped him move money.””

“Yes.””

“And Eleanor trusted her?””

“She was desperate, James. She needed someone inside Richard's household who could access his records.””

I stepped away from the table.

“Where is the recording now?””

Michael opened a drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.

“Vanessa told me she hid it somewhere Richard would never think to look.””

I unfolded the paper.

It contained a handwritten address.

My old repair shop.

The building I had sold after the company expanded.

The place where Vanessa and I had once dreamed about our future.

I looked up.

“Why would she hide it there?””

Michael shook his head.

“She didn't tell me.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

*We recovered another section of Eleanor's video. You need to see this immediately.*

I opened the attachment.

Eleanor appeared on the screen, pale and exhausted but speaking clearly.

“James, if you've found Michael, then the evidence is already moving. I need you to understand that the person who arranged the transfers isn't Richard. Richard is only following orders.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“The person behind everything has been waiting for you to become successful. They want your company now, not because it is failing, but because it is worth more than they ever imagined.””

She glanced at the door.

Then she whispered a name.

“Vanessa knows who it is.””

The video ended.

I looked at my brother.

Michael had gone completely still.

“Who is it?”” I demanded.

He shook his head.

“You have to ask Vanessa.””

“I'm asking you.””

He looked up, his face filled with fear.

“James, if I tell you, they'll know I betrayed them.””

“Who?””

Michael opened his mouth.

Before he could speak, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went white.

The caller ID displayed a single word.

*HOME.*

He answered with trembling fingers.

A woman's voice came through the speaker.

“Michael, darling, is James with you?””

I froze.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at family dinners, birthday celebrations, and my father's funeral.

May you like

It belonged to our mother.

And she had been dead for twelve years.
