Chapter 6: My Father's Secret Trust

I called Hannah before Michael had finished sending the documents.

She answered on the second ring.

“Ethan?””

“Did you amend a trust established by Dad?””

Silence.

Then a sharp breath.

“Where did you hear that?””

“Michael found the records. Hannah, what did you do?””

“I didn't steal anything.””

“I didn't say you did. I asked whether you amended the trust.””

She was quiet for several seconds.

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why?””

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

“From the people who have been asking questions about Dad's estate.””

I stood and began pacing the study.

“What people?””

“Meredith Shaw contacted me three months ago. She said she represented investors interested in acquiring commercial properties connected to our family.””

“Our family owns no commercial properties.””

“That's what I thought.””

She paused.

“Then she showed me a copy of a trust document with Dad's signature. It listed a holding company I'd never heard of.””

I sat down again.

“What holding company?””

“Northbridge Holdings.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know whether the document was legitimate. I contacted an attorney who specializes in estate records. She found an older trust agreement and discovered that Dad had established a private investment structure before he died.””

I stared at the desk.

My father, Robert Carter, had been a quiet man who repaired appliances for a living. He'd driven an aging pickup truck, clipped coupons from the newspaper, and spent Sundays fixing whatever was broken in our small house.

He had never mentioned a private investment company.

“Why would Dad have a trust like that?”” I asked.

“I don't know. The original documents were incomplete. But the attorney found a provision allowing the trust to hold property through subsidiaries.””

“And you amended it?””

“I updated the trustee information and added safeguards after Meredith tried to obtain records. I didn't change the beneficiaries.””

“Who are the beneficiaries?””

She hesitated.

“That's the part I didn't understand.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Hannah, tell me.””

“The trust names you and me as beneficiaries. But there's another provision. If either of us establishes a qualifying family business, the trust can provide financial support under certain conditions.””

I looked toward the window.

Carter House.

My business was the first company I'd built that met that description.

“Did you know about this when I started the restaurant?””

“No. I found the documents afterward. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to think I was trying to influence your decisions.””

“Did you receive any money from the trust?””

“No.””

“Did you give Meredith access to the records?””

“Absolutely not.””

Her voice cracked.

“Ethan, she kept calling. She said the trust had been dormant for years and that I could make a lot of money if I helped her resolve its ownership questions. I refused.””

“Then why did you amend it?””

“Because our attorney said the trustee information was outdated, and anyone could attempt to exploit the gap. She helped me file the changes.””

I closed my eyes.

Someone had used my sister's legitimate attempt to protect our family's interests as part of a scheme that now threatened my company.

Or someone wanted me to believe that.

“Send me the attorney's contact information,” I said.

“Don't speak with Meredith again.””

“I won't.””

“And Hannah?””

“Yes?””

“I'm sorry I questioned you.””

She exhaled shakily.

“I know you're scared. I'm scared, too.””

After we hung up, I called Michael back.

“Find everything you can about Northbridge Holdings, the trust, and Meredith Shaw. Get our attorney involved. I want the original documents, not summaries.””

“Already working on it.””

“And check whether Daniel's company has any connection to the property we're planning to acquire.””

“That's the part that concerns me most,” Michael replied.

“The holding company behind the property purchase is also connected to a loan secured against one of Reed Capital's commercial projects.””

“So Daniel has a financial reason to interfere with our expansion.””

“Possibly. If your planned location succeeds, the value of the surrounding properties could increase. If the deal fails, someone else might be able to acquire them at a discount.””

I looked at the financial projections on my desk.

“Then we need to know who benefits from the failure.””

Michael agreed.

By nine the following morning, I was sitting in a conference room at Carter House's corporate office with Michael, our attorney, and a forensic accountant named Priya Shah.

A large screen displayed the timeline of events.

Unauthorized access to our files.

The altered projections.

Olivia's email to Reed Capital.

Lauren's meeting with Daniel and Meredith.

Hannah's amendment to the trust.

Each event appeared separate until Priya connected them with a single red line.

“Someone appears to have used multiple people to obtain different pieces of information,” she explained.

“Olivia provided operational details. Lauren was approached for personal knowledge. Hannah had access to the trust documents. And your credentials were used to alter the financial files.””

Our attorney, Rachel Morgan, folded her hands.

“Before we assume those actions were coordinated, we need to verify the underlying evidence. But the pattern is concerning.””

“Can we prove who altered the files?”” I asked.

Priya nodded.

“We've recovered an earlier version from the company's encrypted backup. The altered figures were introduced through a remote session using your account. The login was authenticated through a device token stored on your home laptop.””

“Can you identify the person who initiated the session?””

“Not conclusively yet. The session used a remote-access application installed on the device six weeks ago.””

I stared at the screen.

“Who installed it?””

“We're checking the installation records.””

Rachel turned toward me.

“Ethan, until we establish the facts, do not confront anyone you suspect. Don't access the trust assets, and don't make public accusations. We need to preserve the evidence and avoid giving the other party a reason to destroy records.””

“I understand.””

Michael placed another document on the table.

“There's something else. Meredith's holding company has submitted an offer to purchase the commercial property for our fifth location. The offer is contingent on our financing agreement failing.””

I read the clause.

If Carter House failed to secure the financing, the seller could accept the competing offer without penalty.

“And Reed Capital is supposed to provide that financing,” I said.

“Correct.””

I leaned back.

“Daniel could deliberately undermine our deal, then profit from acquiring the property.””

“That's one possibility,” Rachel said.

“But we need proof of intent.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Lauren.

I need to tell you something before you meet Daniel. There's a detail in that recording I didn't notice until this morning.

I called her immediately.

“What detail?””

“I watched the video again. At the end, after I walked away, Daniel and Meredith kept talking.””

“Did the recording include that?””

“Yes. The clip someone sent you cuts off before the conversation ends. I found the original copy in the hotel's shared meeting folder.””

“Send it to Rachel.””

“I will. But Ethan, you need to hear what they said.””

A moment later, a video file arrived.

Rachel opened it on the conference room screen.

The footage resumed after Lauren left the room.

Daniel leaned toward Meredith.

“She won't help us,” he said.

“We'll have to use the other route.””

Meredith opened her folder.

“What about the sister?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She doesn't know what she has. We need the trust documents before Carter figures out why his father created that structure.””

“And if he refuses to sign?””

Daniel smiled.

“Then the financing falls apart, the property purchase proceeds, and we recover our losses through the acquisition.””

Meredith studied him.

“You're sure the old trust gives us a legal path?””

“I'm sure the documents contain a provision we can use.””

“What provision?””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Not here.””

The video ended.

Nobody in the conference room spoke.

Rachel finally broke the silence.

“That is significant, but we need the full recording and a verified chain of custody. We cannot treat a partial clip as proof of every element of the suspected scheme.””

“Understood,” I said.

“But we know they are targeting the trust.””

Priya nodded.

“And we know someone installed remote-access software on your home laptop six weeks before the first suspicious login.””

I looked at the screen again.

Six weeks.

That meant the access had been established long before Vanessa walked into Carter House and mocked me for wearing a black uniform.

The humiliation at table twelve had been an accident.

The plan behind it was not.

I thought about Daniel's face when Michael had called me Mr. Carter. His surprise had seemed genuine, but perhaps he'd simply been surprised to discover that I was working the floor that evening.

Perhaps he hadn't expected to encounter me before the next stage of his scheme.

“Ethan,” Rachel said, “there is one question we haven't answered. Why would Daniel believe he could use your father's trust to gain control over a property you intended to purchase?””

I looked at the copy of the trust document Hannah had sent.

The final page contained a clause written in dense legal language. Priya had highlighted a paragraph referring to a controlling interest in Northbridge Holdings.

Below it was a list of historical assets.

One address stood out.

The building where my mother had worked for nearly twenty years.

The old diner where she'd once skipped meals to pay our rent.

I remembered the day it closed. The owner had told us the property was being sold, and my mother had cried in the car because she believed she'd lost the place where she'd spent half her life.

But according to the document, the property had never left the family's investment structure.

It had been transferred into a subsidiary of Northbridge Holdings shortly before my father died.

And that subsidiary held a controlling interest in the very commercial development Daniel wanted to acquire.

My hands went cold.

“Michael,” I said, “how much is that property worth today?””

He checked his notes.

“Based on recent comparable sales, several million dollars. More if the surrounding redevelopment proceeds.””

I looked at the trust document again.

My father hadn't been a wealthy man in the way I'd understood wealth.

He had been a man who worked quietly, kept his promises, and apparently left behind a financial structure none of us had fully understood.

If Daniel was trying to manipulate the trust, the target might not be my restaurant alone.

It might be something my father had spent years protecting.

Rachel closed the folder.

“We need the original trust agreement and the complete amendment history. Until then, we should assume someone may attempt to pressure Hannah into surrendering control.””

My phone rang.

Hannah.

I answered.

“What's wrong?””

“Ethan, there's someone at my apartment.””

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the floor.

“Who?””

“I don't know. A man in a gray suit. He says he's representing Northbridge Holdings and needs me to sign documents correcting the trust amendment.””

“Do not sign anything.””

“I haven't. He says if I refuse, I could be held personally liable for interfering with the trust.””

“Put him on the phone.””

I heard muffled voices.

Then a man's calm, polished voice came through.

“Mr. Carter, I'm representing the current administrator of Northbridge Holdings. Your sister has made changes to the trust that may affect several pending transactions. We would prefer to resolve the matter privately.””

“Send your documents to our attorney.””

“That may not be possible.””

“Then you have no business asking my sister to sign them.””

He paused.

“Your father understood the importance of protecting family assets. He would not want this to become a public dispute.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

“Don't use my father to pressure my sister.””

“I'm simply reminding you that some matters are best left within the family.””

The call ended.

I immediately contacted Hannah's attorney and asked her to stay with my sister until the situation was resolved.

Then Rachel's phone rang.

She listened for several seconds before looking at me.

“Ethan, the man who visited Hannah has filed an emergency petition seeking to suspend the trust amendment.””

“On what grounds?””

Rachel's expression hardened.

“He claims Hannah altered the records without proper authority.””

“Can he do that?””

“He can file the petition. Whether he can win is another question.””

She turned her laptop toward me.

The petition included a copy of the original trust agreement.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

My father's signature.

And beside it, in handwriting I recognized from the letters he'd left us after his death, was a sentence that made my blood run cold.

If my children are ever threatened over these assets, the sealed letter must be delivered to Ethan Carter personally.

Rachel stared at the page.

“Ethan, do you know what sealed letter your father was referring to?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from Hannah.

I found something in Dad's old storage box. There's an envelope with your name on it. But Ethan, you need to come here.

May you like

A second message followed.

The envelope has already been opened.
