Chapter 8: The Room Beneath Ashford Manor

The message on the wall remained visible beneath the emergency lights.

*YOU NEVER KILLED THE PAST. YOU ONLY BURIED IT.*

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared.

The words were carved deep into the stone behind the missing portrait, as if whoever wrote them wanted the entire family to understand one thing.

This was not a threat.

It was a reminder.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been waiting.

Julian was the first person to move.

He walked toward the wall slowly, his eyes fixed on the carving.

“How did someone do this?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was becoming his pattern.

Silence.

Secrets.

Half-truths.

Julian turned around.

“Father.””

Arthur looked at him.

“Don’t ask me questions you already know I can’t answer.””

The words shocked everyone.

Because for the first time, Arthur wasn’t pretending.

He wasn’t the powerful owner of Ashford Manor.

He was just a man who had spent years running from something.

Charlotte stood near the center of the ballroom, still holding the phone.

“William?””

The call was still connected.

But there was no response.

“William?””

Static.

Then silence.

The call had ended.

She lowered the phone slowly.

“He knew.””

Clara looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That whoever did this is inside the house.””

Her eyes moved around the ballroom.

Every person suddenly looked like a suspect.

Victoria noticed.

She smiled faintly.

“Now you understand how I felt.””

Charlotte looked at her.

“Don’t.””

Victoria’s smile disappeared.

“You think you’re different from me?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Victoria stepped closer.

“We’re more alike than you want to admit.””

Charlotte stared at her.

“I am nothing like you.””

Victoria laughed softly.

“You still believe that?””

Before Charlotte could answer, Arthur interrupted.

“Everyone leaves this room.””

Nobody moved.

Arthur raised his voice.

“Now.””

Julian looked at him.

“No.””

The single word surprised everyone.

Julian had always respected his father.

But tonight had changed something.

“You don’t get to control this anymore.””

Arthur looked at his son.

“Julian.””

“No.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Every person in this room has been controlled by your secrets for years.””

He looked around.

“Charlotte lost her identity.””

He looked at Clara.

“Her family lost the truth.””

Then he looked at Victoria.

“And I almost married someone who wasn’t honest with me.””

Victoria flinched.

Julian continued.

“So no. Nobody leaves.””

Arthur stared at him.

For a moment, father and son stood completely still.

Then Arthur looked away.

“You’re becoming more like William.””

Julian frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

But Thomas did.

“It means William was the only person who ever challenged him.””

Everyone turned.

Thomas pointed toward the hidden message.

“That room wasn’t meant to scare you.””

Charlotte looked at him.

“What room?””

Thomas walked toward the fireplace.

“The room beneath the manor.””

Arthur’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.””

The reaction was immediate.

Everyone noticed.

Julian stepped closer.

“What room?””

Arthur’s voice became firm.

“There is no room.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You sealed it.””

A cold silence followed.

Charlotte looked at Arthur.

“You sealed a room beneath my family’s house?””

Arthur looked at the floor.

“It was for safety.””

Clara gave a bitter laugh.

“Everyone’s favorite excuse.””

Edward suddenly spoke.

“He’s right.””

Everyone looked at him.

Edward continued.

“There is a room.””

Charlotte stared.

“What was inside?””

Edward looked uncomfortable.

“The truth.””

Julian shook his head.

“That answer means nothing.””

Edward sighed.

“Your uncle William discovered the room years before the fire.””

Arthur looked at him sharply.

“Edward.””

“No.””

Edward’s voice was tired.

“I’m done protecting everyone.””

He looked at Charlotte.

“William found documents there.””

“What documents?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

Edward looked toward Arthur.

“Of who actually owned Ashford Manor.””

Nobody spoke.

Charlotte understood.

“The inheritance records.””

Edward nodded.

“Yes.””

Julian looked confused.

“But why hide them?””

Edward answered quietly.

“Because the original documents proved someone had changed them.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

Charlotte stared at him.

“Who?””

Again.

Silence.

But this time, nobody needed an answer.

The entire room looked toward Arthur.

The man who had built an empire.

The man who had protected a family name.

The man who had spent years saying he was protecting people.

Arthur finally spoke.

“I didn’t change the records.””

Nobody moved.

“But I knew someone had.””

Julian looked hurt.

“You knew?””

Arthur nodded.

“And you did nothing?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“For five years?””

Arthur looked at him.

“For five years, I was trying to stop another tragedy.””

Charlotte stepped forward.

“Another tragedy?””

Arthur looked at her.

His expression softened.

“Yes.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the hidden doorway behind the fireplace.

“The person who changed the records was willing to destroy anyone who got close.””

Charlotte followed his eyes.

“You think the person who started the fire is still here?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

That was enough.

A few minutes later, the fireplace mechanism was opened.

Behind it was a narrow stone passage.

Cold air flowed from inside.

The guests whispered nervously.

Julian grabbed a flashlight from a nearby table.

“I’m going.””

Arthur looked at him.

“No.””

“I wasn’t asking.””

Charlotte stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

Julian looked at her.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was steady.

“I spent five years living someone else’s life.””

She looked into the darkness.

“I’m done being afraid of my own past.””

Clara followed.

“So am I.””

Edward hesitated.

Then walked behind them.

Victoria remained near the ballroom entrance.

Julian noticed.

“You’re not coming?””

Victoria looked into the passage.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“No.””

Charlotte stared.

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes met hers.

“Because I already know what’s inside.””

The group froze.

Julian turned.

“You’ve been there?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Charlotte stepped closer.

“When?””

Victoria looked away.

“Five years ago.””

The words changed everything.

Edward whispered:

“No.””

Victoria smiled sadly.

“You all thought I disappeared after the fire.””

She looked at Charlotte.

“But I didn’t.””

Charlotte’s voice was cold.

“What did you find?””

Victoria’s eyes darkened.

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Victoria looked at Arthur.

Then at Charlotte.

“That the person who planned everything…”

She paused.

“Wasn’t me.””

Nobody spoke.

Charlotte shook her head.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Victoria’s voice softened.

“I expect you to see it yourself.””

Then she turned away.

“I’m not going down there.””

Julian frowned.

“Why?””

Victoria looked back.

“Because the last time I entered that room…”

A pause.

“Someone tried to kill me.””

The hallway became silent.

Charlotte looked at the darkness ahead.

“Who?””

Victoria’s answer was barely a whisper.

“The same person who tried to kill you.””

Nobody moved.

Then the passage lights flickered on by themselves.

One after another.

Leading deeper beneath Ashford Manor.

At the end of the hallway was a wooden door.

Old.

Damaged.

Covered in scratches.

On the center of the door was a symbol.

The Ashford family crest.

But someone had carved another mark over it.

A symbol Charlotte had never seen before.

Thomas stopped walking.

His face turned pale.

“No.””

Julian looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas stared at the symbol.

“That mark.””

“What about it?””

Thomas whispered:

“It belonged to William’s first wife.””

Everyone froze.

Charlotte looked confused.

“My father had another wife?””

Arthur’s face changed.

“No.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.””

He touched the symbol.

“The woman everyone erased.””

The door slowly opened.

Not because someone pushed it.

Because it had never been locked.

Inside was a small room.

A table.

Old documents.

Photographs.

And one object placed perfectly in the center.

A baby bracelet.

Charlotte walked closer.

Her breathing stopped.

Because she recognized it.

It was identical to Victoria’s bracelet.

Except this one had different initials carved inside.

Not C.M.

Not V.H.

But three letters.

Letters that made Arthur collapse into silence.

*C.A.*

Charlotte picked it up.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then she noticed the photograph beside it.

A photograph of a newborn baby.

Two women standing beside the child.

One was her mother.

The other was someone she had never seen before.

But Arthur knew.

Because the moment he saw the picture, he whispered:

“She was never supposed to survive.””

Charlotte turned toward him.

“Who?””

Arthur looked terrified.

May you like

And said:

“Your twin sister.””
