The Locked Pantry / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Secret My Brother Carried

I stared at the phone.

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

“Daniel.””

“I’m here.””

“Say that again.””

A pause.

“The recording device came from something your brother brought into the house.””

I looked at the frozen image on my laptop screen.

David.

My brother.

The man who had told me he wanted to protect my children.

The man who claimed he had been collecting proof.

The man who had waited weeks before telling me anything.

“Are you saying he recorded my family?””

“I’m saying we need to understand why.””

I stood up and walked away from the screen.

Because the answer mattered.

It mattered more than anything.

I had spent days uncovering layers of lies.

Vanessa lied.

The school failed.

People saw things and stayed quiet.

But David?

That hurt differently.

Because I trusted him.

“Michael,” Daniel said.

“Yeah?””

“Don’t confront him yet.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

“Because right now, you don’t know what he’s hiding.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

Mason was drawing at the kitchen table.

Two children who had already lost their sense of safety.

I couldn’t afford to make another mistake.

“Find out everything.””

“I’m already working on it.””

I ended the call.

Then I looked at the video again.

And for the first time, I wondered if I had been too quick to believe anyone.

David came over that afternoon.

I didn’t call him.

He called me.

“I need to explain.””

His voice sounded tired.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

That almost made it worse.

Because I didn’t know which version of him was real anymore.

When he arrived, he stood outside the front door.

For years, he had walked into my house without knocking.

Now he waited.

Like he knew something had changed.

I opened the door.

He looked past me.

“Are the kids here?””

“Yes.””

His face softened.

“How are they?””

I stared at him.

“You don’t get to ask that like you’re not part of this.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

“No, David.””

My voice hardened.

“I don’t think you do.””

He stepped inside.

I closed the door.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I placed the tablet on the table.

The video was paused.

On him.

His expression changed.

“You found it.””

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Just acceptance.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew?””

David sat down slowly.

“I knew you would eventually.””

I stared.

“Eventually?””

He rubbed his face.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I walked closer.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked up.

“I’m not asking as your brother.””

I pointed upstairs.

“I’m asking as Lily’s father.””

His eyes dropped.

“Tell me the truth.””

A long silence.

Then:

“I recorded it.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because nobody believed me.””

The words sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a wound.

Everyone had an explanation.

But explanations didn’t erase what happened.

“You could have told me.””

“I tried.””

“You said that already.””

“Because it’s true.””

He stood.

“I came to you.””

“When?””

“After I saw the first incident.””

My face changed.

“The first?””

David looked away.

And I knew.

There was more.

“What first incident?””

He didn’t answer.

“David.””

He sighed.

“Lily got hurt.””

My blood ran cold.

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

I clenched my jaw.

“The bike story.””

He nodded.

“She didn’t fall off a bike.””

The room felt smaller.

“What happened?””

David hesitated.

Then said:

“I don’t know exactly.””

That answer confused me.

“What do you mean?””

“I heard shouting.””

He swallowed.

“I came over because Vanessa called me.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed help.””

I waited.

“What did you see?””

His face changed.

Like he was back there again.

“She was angry.””

“About what?””

“Lily had spilled something.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then what?””

“She grabbed Lily’s arm.””

I felt sick.

“How hard?””

David looked at me.

“Hard enough that Lily cried.””

My hands curled.

“And you did what?””

“I stopped her.””

“You stopped her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

David looked away.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

“With what?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“With what?””

His voice became quiet.

“She had proof I wasn’t supposed to be there.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

David sat back down.

“Michael, I need you to understand something.””

“I’m listening.””

“I was at your house that night because Vanessa asked me to come.””

“Why?””

“She said you were working too much. She said she needed someone to talk to.””

I laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“So you were helping her.””

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“And then I realized she wasn’t telling the truth.””

“About what?””

“About Lily.””

Silence.

David looked at the floor.

“She wanted me to believe Lily was the problem.””

I nodded slowly.

“Same story she told everyone.””

“Yes.””

“Then why record?””

His answer came immediately.

“Because I knew if I accused her, you’d ask for proof.””

I stared at him.

“And you thought secretly filming my house was okay?””

His face tightened.

“No.””

At least he admitted it.

“I knew it was wrong.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was scared.””

That surprised me.

“Of Vanessa?””

“No.””

He looked up.

“Of myself.””

I didn’t understand.

“What?””

David took a breath.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes.””

“I should have called the police.””

“Yes.””

“I should have done more.””

His voice cracked.

“But I didn’t.””

For the first time, I saw something besides fear.

Guilt.

Real guilt.

“I thought I could fix it quietly.””

I shook my head.

“You can’t fix something like this quietly.””

“I know that now.””

I looked away.

Because the worst part was…

I believed him.

And I hated that.

That evening, Daniel called again.

“I found something.””

I stepped outside.

“What?””

“David wasn’t the only person recording.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“There are two sets of recordings.””

“From where?””

“One from the device David brought.””

“And the other?””

A pause.

“From inside your house.””

I looked back at the windows.

At the place where my children slept.

“Who?””

“We’re still trying to determine that.””

“Daniel.””

“I know.””

His voice lowered.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The second recording starts before David ever entered the house.””

I froze.

“What does it show?””

Silence.

Then:

“Michael…”

“What?””

“The person who placed the camera knew you would eventually find out.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because the camera wasn’t hidden to spy on Lily.””

I waited.

“Then what was it for?””

Daniel answered slowly.

“It was hidden to capture someone else.””

I looked through the window.

At Vanessa.

She was standing in the kitchen.

Watching me.

And suddenly I wondered…

Was she waiting for me to discover the truth?

Or was she waiting for me to discover the wrong one?

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*“Ask your brother what happened the night your daughter got hurt.””*

I looked at David’s contact.

Then at Vanessa.

Then upstairs.

May you like

And I realized the truth was no longer about finding the person who hurt Lily.

It was about finding out who had been protecting them.
