Chapter 7: The Letter My Wife Left Behind

I read the message again.

Then again.

*“You should ask why Sarah never told you about Vanessa.””*

My hands went cold.

Sarah.

My wife.

Mia’s mother.

The woman who had been gone for four years.

The woman whose absence still felt impossible sometimes.

For a moment, I forgot about Vanessa.

I forgot about the documents.

I forgot about everything.

Because the message had opened a door I thought was permanently closed.

A door to the past.

A past I believed I understood.

I looked at Claire.

“Who sent this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t?””

“No.””

I showed her the screen.

Her expression changed.

“Adrian…”

“What?””

“Maybe you should find out what Sarah knew.””

I stared at her.

“Sarah never met Vanessa.””

Claire looked at the folder.

“Are you sure?””

The question bothered me.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.

That night, I barely slept.

Mia was safe at Emily’s house.

I should have felt relieved.

But instead, I felt like I was standing in the middle of a storm.

Every truth I discovered created three more questions.

Who was Vanessa before she met me?

How much did my family know?

And why would Sarah have information about her?

At three in the morning, I went through old boxes.

Boxes I had avoided opening for years.

Photos.

Letters.

Medical records.

Small memories from a life that felt like it belonged to someone else.

Then I found it.

A wooden box Sarah used to keep beside her bed.

I had not opened it since she passed away.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Pictures of Mia as a baby.

A small bracelet from the hospital.

And an envelope.

My name was written on the front.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized Sarah’s handwriting.

*Adrian.*

I sat on the floor.

For several minutes, I just stared.

Why had I never found this before?

Why had she hidden it?

I opened the envelope carefully.

The letter was dated three months before she died.

Adrian,

If you are reading this, something must have happened that made you look for answers.

I wish I could be there to explain everything myself.

But if I’m not, I need you to know something important.

Protect Mia.

I stopped reading.

Because those two words were exactly what I had been trying to do.

But somehow, I had failed.

I continued.

You have always believed the best in people. That is one of the reasons I love you. But sometimes your kindness makes you ignore things you should see.

My eyes burned.

Because Sarah knew me.

She always had.

After Mia was born, I became careful about who entered our lives. Not because I wanted to be suspicious. Because being a parent means thinking about dangers your child cannot see.

Then came the sentence that made me freeze.

There is a woman named Vanessa Whitmore.

I dropped the paper.

Vanessa.

Sarah knew her name.

I picked it back up with shaking hands.

If Vanessa ever becomes close to our family, please be careful.

My heart pounded.

I met her once.

Once.

That was impossible.

I kept reading.

She approached me at a charity event. She asked many questions about Mia. At first, I thought she was simply being friendly. But something about her questions felt wrong.

I looked at the date.

Two years before Vanessa met me.

Two years.

Sarah had known about her before I did.

She asked about our finances. She asked about Mia’s future. She asked who would take care of Mia if something happened to us.

My breathing became heavier.

Because those were not normal questions.

Not from a stranger.

I told myself I was being paranoid. But later, I discovered she had been asking other people about our family too.

I turned the page.

Then I saw the final paragraph.

Adrian, if Vanessa ever appears in our lives, don’t assume she is there by chance.

I stopped.

The room felt silent.

Sarah had known.

She had warned me.

And I had ignored a warning I never knew existed.

The next morning, I went straight to my father’s house.

He opened the door and immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I held up the letter.

His face changed.

“You found it.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

He looked away.

That answer hurt more than anything.

“How long?””

“Adrian—”

“How long did you know about Vanessa?””

He sighed.

“Your mother and I knew Sarah had concerns.””

“Concerns?””

I stepped inside.

“She wrote that Vanessa asked about Mia before I ever met her.””

My father became quiet.

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You knew.””

“We didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

He sat down.

“We thought Sarah was being overly cautious.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

“Adrian.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She was your daughter-in-law. She was Mia’s mother. She was protecting our child.””

His expression softened.

“You’re right.””

The admission surprised me.

But I was too angry to care.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Sarah never wanted to create a problem without proof.””

“She left proof.””

My father looked at the letter.

“Yes.””

“And you still did nothing.””

He lowered his head.

“I thought Vanessa changed.””

I stared.

“How?””

“Because after Sarah died, Vanessa was kind to you.””

I shook my head.

“She was pretending.””

“Maybe.””

That word made me angry.

“Maybe?””

My father looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

For the first time in days, someone apologized without making an excuse.

But it didn’t erase anything.

I returned to Emily’s house before Mia woke up.

I didn’t want her to see my anger.

She deserved a father.

Not someone consumed by revenge.

When she came downstairs, she was carrying a drawing.

“Daddy.””

I smiled.

“What’s that?””

She handed it to me.

It was a picture of three people holding hands.

Me.

Her.

And Sarah.

I swallowed.

“That’s beautiful.””

“I made it yesterday.””

“Yesterday?””

She nodded.

“When I was sad.””

I looked at her.

“Why were you sad?””

She shrugged.

“Because families are supposed to stay together.””

The sentence hit me.

I sat beside her.

“Sometimes families change.””

She looked worried.

“Are we changing?””

I held her hand.

“We’re becoming safer.””

She thought about that.

Then nodded.

“Okay.””

Children shouldn’t have to understand things like this.

But Mia was learning.

Too quickly.

That afternoon, Claire called.

“I found something else.””

I stepped outside.

“What?””

“Vanessa’s mother.””

“What about her?””

“She disappeared.””

I frowned.

“Disappeared?””

“She left the company records months ago.””

“Why does that matter?””

“Because before she left, she transferred something.””

“What?””

“A copy of the original plan.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then how do you know it exists?””

“Because Vanessa has it.””

I looked back through the window.

Mia was coloring with Emily.

Safe.

For now.

“What’s in the plan?””

Claire hesitated.

Then answered:

“Everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Vanessa didn’t just want access to Mia’s inheritance.””

I waited.

“She wanted to prove you were an unfit parent.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“She needed a legal reason to gain control.””

I stared into the house.

At my daughter.

“Control of what?””

Claire’s voice became quiet.

“Custody.””

That night, I made one mistake.

I thought Vanessa would wait.

I thought she would stay quiet.

I thought she would realize the plan was falling apart.

I was wrong.

At 9:43 p.m., my phone rang.

It was my lawyer.

“Adrian.””

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

“There’s been a filing.””

My heart sank.

“Against who?””

A pause.

Then:

“You.””

I stood up.

“What?””

“Vanessa has filed a petition regarding Mia’s custody.””

The room spun.

“She filed against me?””

“Yes.””

“On what grounds?””

My lawyer hesitated.

Then said:

“She claims you created an unsafe environment for your daughter.””

I almost couldn’t breathe.

“She’s lying.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

“Because she attached evidence.””

My hands tightened.

“What evidence?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Videos.””

I froze.

“What videos?””

My lawyer’s voice became serious.

“Videos of you arguing with Vanessa.””

I looked toward the hallway.

Because suddenly I understood.

The cameras.

The ones I had forgotten about.

The ones Vanessa knew existed.

She had not just been recording moments.

She had been collecting them.

Preparing.

Waiting.

Then my lawyer said the words that changed everything:

“Adrian… there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“The videos were edited.””

I closed my eyes.

“Edited how?””

His answer was almost a whisper.

“Enough to make it look like you were threatening her.””

I looked at the dark window.

At my reflection.

At the man who thought he had finally uncovered the truth.

But Vanessa had been preparing for this moment too.

And this time…

May you like

She wasn’t trying to break Mia’s ribbon.

She was trying to take Mia away from me.
