Chapter 1: The Woman in the Blue Gown

“Don't touch me!””

Serena Hayes screamed so loudly that the crystal chandelier above the foyer trembled with the echo.

She stumbled backward, clutching the torn seam of her royal-blue gown. One hand flew to her chest, while the other pointed accusingly at her elderly father-in-law, Calvin Hayes, who stood beside his mahogany desk with a financial report still in his hand.

“Stay away from me!”” she cried.

“I told you to stop!””

Calvin stared at her in disbelief.

“Serena, what on earth are you talking about?””

Before he could take another breath, the front door flew open.

Damon Hayes rushed inside, his charcoal business suit creased from a long day of meetings. His eyes immediately landed on his wife, whose cheeks were wet with tears.

“Damon!”” Serena sobbed.

She ran into his arms and buried her face against his chest.

“Your father tried to attack me!””

Damon froze.

For thirty-eight years, Calvin Hayes had been the one person Damon believed would never betray him. His father had raised him alone after his mother's death, sacrificing vacations, relationships, and even his own happiness to give his son a future.

But all Damon could see now was his wife's torn dress and trembling shoulders.

He turned toward Calvin.

“Tell me she's lying.””

Calvin's expression hardened.

“Son, I haven't touched your wife.””

“Then why is she crying?””

“Because I don't know what she's doing.””

Serena let out another anguished sob.

“Please, Damon. Don't make me stand here with him.””

That was enough.

Damon crossed the foyer in two strides and struck his father across the face.

The sound cracked through the elegant room.

Calvin staggered against the desk. His reading glasses slipped from his face and shattered against the marble floor. For a moment, he simply stood there, one hand pressed against his bleeding lip.

He didn't strike back.

He didn't even raise his arms.

He looked at his son with an expression that made the room feel colder than it had a second earlier.

“Damon,” he whispered.

“You hit me.””

Damon's chest rose and fell.

“You touched my wife?””

“No.””

“Don't lie to me!””

Calvin slowly straightened his jacket.

“I taught you to protect the innocent. I never taught you to punish someone before hearing the truth.””

Serena tightened her grip on Damon's arm.

“He grabbed me,” she insisted.

“I told him to let go, but he wouldn't listen.””

Damon immediately stepped in front of her.

“It's okay, sweetheart. I'm here.””

Calvin watched the gesture in silence.

His son had once stood in this same foyer at seventeen, crying after a car accident that had nearly killed a classmate. Calvin had held him through the night, promising that one mistake would never define his life.

Now Damon had made a mistake of his own.

And he had made it without hesitation.

“Look at the security camera,” Calvin said.

Damon frowned.

“What?””

“The camera above the entrance. Check the recording.””

Serena's sobbing stopped.

Only for a second.

But Calvin noticed.

So did Damon.

“There is no need to involve the security system,” Serena said quickly.

“I know what happened. I was there.””

Calvin turned his bruised face toward her.

“So was I.””

Her fingers tightened around Damon's sleeve.

“Why are you doing this to me?”” she whispered.

“Haven't you hurt me enough?””

Damon's expression softened immediately.

“Dad, stop. She's terrified.””

“Then the footage should help her,” Calvin replied.

“Unless you want to humiliate her,” Damon snapped.

Calvin looked at his son as if he no longer recognized him.

“Humiliate her? Damon, you struck me in front of your employee and your housekeeper. I'm asking for a recording that will tell us what happened.””

At the mention of the housekeeper, all three turned toward the hallway.

Martha Collins stood there holding a silver tray. She had worked for the Hayes family for eleven years, long enough to remember when Damon had been a boy who ran downstairs every morning to kiss his father before school.

Now she watched the elderly man wipe blood from his mouth.

Her eyes drifted toward Serena's torn gown.

Then she looked down.

Calvin noticed.

“Martha, would you bring me the tablet for the security system?””

The housekeeper hesitated.

“Yes, Mr. Hayes.””

Serena stepped forward.

“No!””

The word came out so sharply that Martha stopped in the doorway.

Serena immediately pressed a hand to her mouth.

“I mean…” She swallowed.

“There's no reason to drag Martha into this. She's only trying to do her job.””

Damon turned toward his wife.

“Why are you so worried about the footage?””

“Because I don't want to relive it!”” Serena cried.

“Is that so difficult to understand?””

He reached for her hand.

“No, sweetheart. Of course not.””

Calvin closed his eyes briefly.

There it was again.

His son was apologizing to the wrong person.

Martha returned with the tablet and placed it on the desk. Calvin put on his spare reading glasses, his fingers moving slowly as he opened the security application.

Four camera feeds appeared on the screen.

The driveway.

The kitchen entrance.

The library.

The foyer.

“Open the recording from five minutes ago,” Calvin instructed.

Damon took the tablet.

Serena caught his wrist.

“Damon, please. I don't want you to see me like that.””

He looked at her.

“Like what?””

“Frightened. Weak. I hate that he made me feel that way.””

Damon gently removed her hand.

“If my father is telling the truth, this will prove it. If he's lying, it'll prove that, too.””

For the first time, Serena seemed unable to find an answer.

The recording loaded.

On the screen, Calvin sat alone behind his mahogany desk, reading a report. The grandfather clock in the corner marked the passage of time without sound.

Then Serena entered.

She looked toward the staircase.

Then toward the front door.

Finally, she turned her face directly toward the security camera.

Damon leaned closer.

“What is she doing?”” he murmured.

Nobody answered.

On the recording, Serena remained motionless for several seconds. Then she reached behind her waist, grabbed the seam of her royal-blue gown, and pulled.

The fabric split.

She pulled again, making the tear wider.

Damon's fingers tightened around the tablet.

Serena went pale.

On-screen, she glanced at the camera once more before stumbling backward into the edge of the desk.

Calvin stood up, startled.

Serena pointed at him.

Even without sound, the accusation was unmistakable.

Then she screamed.

Damon stopped breathing.

The recording continued for another thirty seconds. Calvin remained several feet away from Serena, his hands visible, while she repeatedly pointed at him and moved toward the entrance.

Then Damon himself appeared on-screen.

He rushed into the foyer.

He grabbed his wife.

He turned toward his father.

And struck him.

The tablet trembled in his hands.

Calvin touched his swollen cheek.

“Now,” he said quietly, “tell me what you saw.””

Damon lowered the device.

He turned toward Serena.

“You made me hit my own father.””

Serena opened her mouth, but no words came.

“You tore your own dress,” Damon continued.

“You screamed before he even came near you.””

“I can explain.””

“Explain what?””

Her eyes darted toward the front door.

Damon noticed.

“Look at me, Serena.””

She obeyed slowly.

“Was any of it true?””

Tears gathered in her eyes again, but this time Damon didn't reach for her.

“Damon, I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She shook her head.

“Please. Not here.””

Calvin picked up his fallen glasses from the floor. One lens was cracked, and the metal frame had bent where it struck the marble.

“Tell him the truth,” he said.

Serena looked at him with sudden hatred.

“You don't know anything about me.””

“I know I never laid a hand on you.””

“You've always hated me!””

“I welcomed you into my home.””

“You never thought I was good enough for your son!””

Calvin stared at her.

“I thought you were the woman he loved. That was enough.””

For a brief moment, Serena looked almost ashamed.

Then her expression changed.

She stepped toward Damon, lowering her voice.

“Your father doesn't want us to be happy. He's been trying to separate us since the day we got married.””

Damon's jaw tightened.

“Stop.””

“He controls everything. The house, the money, the company. He thinks you belong to him.””

“Stop talking.””

“He'll never let you become your own man!””

“SERENA!””

His shout silenced the room.

Damon looked down at the tablet again, then at his father, who was standing with one hand pressed against the desk to steady himself.

“Dad,” Damon whispered, “I'm sorry.””

Calvin's eyes shone, but he didn't move toward his son.

“An apology doesn't erase what you did.””

“I know.””

“No, Damon. You don't. You didn't even ask me what happened.””

Damon lowered his head.

For the first time that evening, he had nothing to say.

Then Serena spoke again.

“It wasn't supposed to happen like this.””

The words escaped so quietly that Damon almost missed them.

Almost.

He lifted his head.

“What did you just say?””

Serena covered her mouth.

Calvin slowly turned toward her.

Damon took one step forward.

“What wasn't supposed to happen like this?””

Serena backed away.

And in the silence that followed, the woman who had controlled every room she entered finally understood that the recording had exposed only the first layer of her lie.

Because Damon wasn't looking at the security footage anymore.

May you like

He was looking at her.

And he was waiting for an answer.
