Chapter 6: The Man Who Wanted His Daughter Back

I let the phone ring four times before answering.

"Marcus Hayes," I said.

The man on the other end sounded older than I remembered from the few photographs Claire had shown me years ago. His voice was calm, controlled, and practiced.

"Marcus. My name is Daniel Brooks. I believe we need to talk.""

I looked through the glass into Maya's recovery room.

"You're calling a hospital at midnight to discuss a fifteen-year-old girl who's recovering from emergency surgery. Choose your next words carefully.""

Daniel paused.

"I heard Maya was unwell. I hope she's going to be all right.""

"She's stable.""

"I'm glad.""

"How did you get this number?""

"Rebecca gave it to me.""

Of course she had.

"What do you want?""

"I want to meet my daughter.""

The words came so easily that I nearly dropped the phone.

"Your daughter?""

"Marcus, I understand this is difficult.""

"No. You don't understand anything about what you've done.""

"I haven't done anything to Maya.""

"You've been communicating with my sister-in-law, offering money, and sending legal documents for a girl you've barely met. What exactly would you call that?""

Daniel exhaled.

"I never intended to hurt her.""

"Then why did you want her to sign an inheritance waiver?""

Silence.

That was the first moment he sounded less prepared.

"Rebecca told you about that.""

"She did.""

"The document was intended to avoid a lengthy legal dispute.""

"She's fifteen.""

"Which is why I wanted the matter resolved before she became an adult.""

I stared at the wall.

There was something chilling about the way he spoke. He wasn't shouting. He wasn't threatening me. He was treating a child's identity as a problem that needed to be settled before a deadline.

"You haven't established that you're her biological father," I said.

"Not yet.""

"Then stop calling her your daughter.""

"I have reason to believe she is.""

"Based on what?""

"Old correspondence. The dates. Things Claire told me.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

"What did Claire tell you?""

"That Maya was conceived around the time we were together.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Did Claire tell you that before or after you contacted Rebecca?""

"Before.""

"How long have you known Maya existed?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I suspected it for years.""

"And you did nothing?""

"I was told Claire had married someone else and wanted no contact.""

"So you stayed away.""

"Yes.""

"Until your father died.""

He said nothing.

I looked down at the phone.

"That's interesting timing.""

"My father's estate is complicated.""

"I'm sure it is.""

"Marcus, I know how this looks. But if Maya is my biological child, she may have legal rights that need to be protected.""

"Then establish the facts through the proper process. Don't ask a fifteen-year-old to sign away rights she doesn't understand.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about. My family has lawyers handling the estate. I was trying to avoid dragging Maya through a public dispute.""

"By negotiating with my wife's sister behind my back?""

"I thought it would be easier.""

"For whom?""

He didn't answer.

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I stood motionless in the hallway.

Then I walked into Maya's room.

She was awake, watching a nature documentary with the volume turned low. When she saw my face, she muted the television.

"Was that him?""

I sat beside her.

"Yes.""

"Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

I considered how much a recovering fifteen-year-old needed to know at that moment.

"He wants to meet you. But nothing is going to happen unless you're comfortable with it and we have the facts.""

Maya looked down at her hands.

"Do I have to?""

"No.""

"Even if he's my biological father?""

"Even then.""

She seemed to relax a little.

"Mom said I owed him a chance.""

"You don't owe anyone access to you because of a biological connection.""

Maya stared at the blanket.

"Would you want to meet him if you were me?""

I thought about the question.

"I'd want to understand the truth. But I wouldn't let anyone rush me into a decision while I was frightened or recovering from surgery.""

She nodded.

Then she asked, "Did you know Mom might have been pregnant before you married her?""

I felt the familiar ache in my chest.

"She told me tonight.""

"Are you going to divorce her?""

The question caught me off guard.

I looked at my daughter, whose face was still pale from the surgery.

"I don't know what will happen between your mother and me. But whatever happens, you will still have me.""

She reached for my hand.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

A nurse came in to check her vital signs, so I stepped outside while she worked.

When I returned, Maya was asleep.

Claire stood near the window, holding a paper cup of coffee.

"Daniel called you," she said.

It wasn't a question.

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

"That he wants to meet Maya.""

Claire closed her eyes.

"I was afraid of this.""

"Why?""

"Because he'll destroy everything.""

I stared at her.

"He's a man who may or may not be Maya's biological father. If he's telling the truth, he has every right to pursue the matter lawfully. If he's lying, we'll find that out. Either way, we're not going to let him negotiate with our daughter behind our backs.""

Claire shook her head.

"You don't understand his family.""

"Then explain them.""

She placed the coffee on the windowsill.

"Daniel's father was wealthy. Very wealthy. He built a property development company, and most of his assets are held in trusts. Daniel was supposed to inherit control of the business, but his father changed the terms of the estate before he died.""

"Why?""

"Because he discovered Daniel had been hiding debts.""

I raised an eyebrow.

"What kind of debts?""

"Business loans. Personal guarantees. Investments that failed.""

I thought of the $18,500 transfer.

"How much does he owe?""

"I don't know the exact amount.""

"You're surrounded by people who don't know anything about the money they're moving.""

Claire flinched.

She continued anyway.

"Daniel needs the estate settled. If Maya is his daughter, she could become a beneficiary under certain circumstances. But if she signs the waiver, he can argue that she's chosen not to pursue any claim.""

"And he offered Rebecca money to make that happen.""

Claire nodded.

"She said it was the only way to save her house.""

I stared at my wife.

"So you stole from our daughter to help your sister save her house, and you wanted Maya to sign away a possible inheritance to help Daniel settle his estate.""

"I didn't see it that way.""

"How did you see it?""

She looked at me helplessly.

"I thought I could fix everything before you found out.""

There it was again.

Not regret for what she'd done.

Regret that I'd discovered it.

I took out my phone and opened the banking app.

"Who authorized the transfer to Northstar Youth Development?""

"I did.""

"Why that company?""

"Rebecca said it was where the repayment would come from.""

"Who owns it?""

"I don't know.""

I shook my head.

"Then we're going to find out.""

Claire stepped closer.

"Marcus, please. Don't involve lawyers yet. We can resolve this privately.""

"No.""

"You could ruin Rebecca's life.""

"Rebecca involved herself in our daughter's future. She can explain her decisions to the appropriate people.""

Claire grabbed my arm.

"She made a mistake!""

"So did you. The difference is that Maya paid for yours with her health, her trust, and the belief that she had to protect the adults around her.""

Claire released me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, "I didn't think the pain was that serious.""

I looked at her.

"That's the one thing you keep saying, and it's the one thing I can't accept anymore. You don't have to be a doctor to believe your child when she says she's in pain.""

She began crying again.

I left her by the window and returned to Maya.

The next morning, the hospital team confirmed that Maya was responding to treatment. She would need to remain under observation, but the immediate danger had passed.

I sat beside her while she ate a few spoonfuls of broth.

"How does it taste?"" I asked.

"Like warm water with an identity crisis.""

I laughed so hard that the nurse passing the doorway smiled.

For a few minutes, she was simply my daughter again: sarcastic, stubborn, and determined to make me laugh even when she was hurting.

Then she looked at my phone.

"Did you call Aunt Rebecca?""

"Not yet.""

"She'll be angry.""

"That's not your responsibility.""

Maya stirred the broth.

"She told me Mom was trying to protect me from something that happened before I was born.""

"Did she explain what?""

"No. She said I'd understand when I was older.""

I leaned forward.

"Sweetheart, adults sometimes say that because they think children can't handle the truth. Sometimes they're trying to protect them. Sometimes they're protecting themselves.""

Maya looked at me.

"Which one was Mom doing?""

I didn't answer immediately.

"I think your mother was afraid. But being afraid doesn't make it right to lie to you.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she reached for her phone.

"I saved another message.""

She opened a conversation with Rebecca and handed it to me.

The message was dated six days earlier.

Your mother has agreed to the arrangement. Daniel will pay the money once you sign. Don't make this harder than it has to be.

Beneath it was Maya's reply.

I'm not signing anything.

Rebecca's response had arrived less than a minute later.

Then your father will finally learn why Claire chose him.

I stared at the screen.

"What does that mean?"" I asked.

Maya shook her head.

"I don't know.""

I called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

"Marcus, please don't do anything until we talk.""

"What did you mean when you told Maya I'd learn why Claire chose me?""

A long silence followed.

Then Rebecca said, "I meant that Claire didn't marry you for the reasons you think.""

"I already know about Daniel.""

"No. You know about the possibility that Daniel is Maya's biological father. You don't know what happened before your wedding.""

I gripped the phone.

"Then tell me.""

Rebecca's voice trembled.

"Claire was desperate. Daniel had told her he wasn't ready to have a child. She was afraid he'd leave her, and she was afraid her parents would find out she was pregnant.""

"She told me all of that.""

"There's more.""

"What?""

"Claire didn't just meet you at that birthday party by accident.""

My stomach tightened.

"What are you talking about?""

"She knew who you were before she met you.""

I looked through the glass at Maya, who was watching me anxiously.

Rebecca continued.

"Your company was hiring a new project coordinator at the time. Claire had seen your name on a list of employees. She knew you were stable, that you wanted a family, and that you'd been saving for a house.""

I couldn't speak.

"She asked me to introduce you," Rebecca said.

"She told me you were exactly the kind of man who would give her child a secure life.""

I felt as though I were hearing a story about a stranger.

"You're saying she planned our relationship?""

"Not every part of it. She grew to love you, Marcus. I believe that. But the beginning wasn't as accidental as she told you.""

I stared at the hospital floor.

Fifteen years of memories rearranged themselves in my mind.

The party where Claire had supposedly spilled a drink on my jacket.

The conversation about children that had happened on our second date.

The way she'd seemed almost relieved when I told her I'd always wanted to be a father.

Had I been chosen?

Or had I been recruited?

"Why tell me this now?"" I asked.

"Because the document you found isn't the only document Claire signed.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What other document?""

Rebecca took a shaky breath.

"A private agreement from before your wedding. Daniel made Claire sign it when she told him she might be pregnant. It was supposed to settle the matter between them permanently.""

"What did it say?""

"That if Daniel ever established paternity, Claire would not seek child support or any inheritance on the child's behalf.""

I stared at the wall.

"And the signature on my paternity acknowledgment?""

"I don't know who forged it.""

"You're her sister. You helped move the money. You were involved in the agreement. Don't tell me you know nothing.""

Rebecca began crying.

"I didn't forge your signature, Marcus.""

"Then who did?""

She hesitated.

When she finally answered, her voice was barely audible.

"Claire says she didn't do it, either.""

I looked toward Maya's room.

"Then who did?""

Rebecca took a breath.

"The person who signed your name may be the only one who knows why the entire arrangement was created.""

"Who?""

She whispered a name.

And when I heard it, I understood that the secret had never been only about Daniel, Claire, or even Maya.

It was about someone I had trusted long before my wife entered my life.

Someone who had been standing beside me when Maya was born.

May you like

Someone who had every reason to make sure I never questioned the truth.

My father.
