Chapter 8: The Airport Trap
At 6:51 a.m., I received a photograph of the new custody statement.
My name appeared at the bottom.
The date was correct.
The signature looked convincing.
But there was one detail Daniel had overlooked.
The document stated that I had voluntarily surrendered custody of Lily at 11:30 p.m. the previous night.
At that time, Emily had been sitting beside me in our kitchen. Lily had been asleep upstairs. Michael had been speaking with me about the trust, and I had been sending evidence to the police.
I had never met Daniel.
I had never signed anything.
And now he had created a document placing me somewhere I'd never been.
"He's getting desperate," Emily said, looking over my shoulder.
I forwarded the photograph to Michael.
His reply came almost immediately.
Do not contact Daniel. We're sending this to the authorities and documenting the timeline. Keep any records showing where you were last night.
I looked at Emily.
"Can you confirm I was here?""
She nodded.
"I was with you from the time I arrived until now.""
"I need you to write down everything you remember. The times, the calls, the messages.""
"Already doing it.""
Emily opened her laptop and began creating a timeline.
For the first time since the airport, I felt something stronger than fear.
Daniel had spent years assuming that the people around him would accept his explanations.
He'd counted on my trust, Vanessa's belief, Richard's professional authority, and Mark's willingness to remain silent.
But now the lies were colliding.
And every new document he produced gave us another opportunity to expose the truth.
At 7:04 a.m., Michael called.
"The authorities are moving to verify the custody statement. We're also working with the appropriate officials regarding Lily's travel.""
"Can I go to the airport?""
"I don't recommend going there alone. We need to avoid a confrontation and let the authorities handle any attempt to board the flight.""
"But that's my daughter.""
"I understand, Sarah. If the authorities ask you to come in, we'll coordinate that. Until then, remain available and keep your phone charged.""
I paced the kitchen.
"What if he gets on the plane?""
"We're working to prevent that outcome. I can't promise what will happen, but we're treating it as urgent.""
At 7:12 a.m., Vanessa called.
"I know where Daniel is.""
My heart lurched.
"Where?""
"He's at the airport. He sent me a picture of the departures board and told me to meet him at Gate B18.""
"Did he say Lily was with him?""
"No. But he told me to bring Nathan's passport.""
I gripped the counter.
"Why would he need Nathan's passport if he's leaving without you?""
"Because he wants me to come. He said we could still be a family if I stopped talking to you.""
I swallowed.
"Vanessa, don't go to the gate. Tell the authorities what he sent you.""
"I already called the detective. He told me not to approach Daniel.""
"Good.""
She hesitated.
"Sarah, I think he's planning to use Nathan, too.""
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?""
"He said something about taking both children if I didn't cooperate. He told me the papers were already prepared.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had apparently decided that if one family wouldn't follow him willingly, he would try to drag both families into his plan.
"Where is Nathan now?""
"With my mother. He's safe.""
"Keep him there.""
"I will.""
We ended the call.
At 7:19 a.m., Detective Harris contacted me with instructions to remain available and provide any additional messages immediately. He confirmed that officials at the airport had been alerted to the disputed documents and the urgent concerns about Lily's travel.
But he couldn't tell me whether Daniel had already checked in.
I sat at the kitchen table and stared at the clock.
7:23.
Forty-seven minutes until departure.
Emily brought me a glass of water.
"Drink.""
I shook my head.
"Sarah, drink the water.""
I took it from her and forced myself to swallow.
Then my phone buzzed.
Daniel.
I'm at the airport. You have one last chance to do the right thing.
I stared at the message.
Another appeared.
Tell the police you misunderstood the documents. Tell them you agreed to the move.
I felt my pulse pounding in my throat.
No, I typed.
His response came seconds later.
Then you'll never see Lily again.
I stopped breathing.
Emily read the message and immediately photographed it.
"Send it to Michael.""
I did.
Then I called Detective Harris.
He listened without interrupting.
"Mrs. Carter, preserve the message. We'll pass it to the airport team. Do not respond further.""
I put the phone down.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Then I remembered Lily's words.
Daddy said you wouldn't come looking for me.
I stood.
"I'm going to the airport.""
Emily looked alarmed.
"Michael told you not to go alone.""
"I'm not going alone. I'm calling him now, and I'm going wherever the authorities tell me to go. But I can't sit here waiting without knowing what's happening.""
I called Michael.
He was silent for a moment after I explained.
Then he said, "I'll coordinate with the authorities. Don't drive there until we confirm the safest way to proceed.""
I paced the kitchen while he made calls.
At 7:36 a.m., he called back.
"The airport team is aware of the situation. They want you to remain available while they verify the travel documents. If they need you to attend, they'll tell us where to go.""
I sat down again.
It felt unbearable to do nothing.
But I had spent enough time allowing Daniel to dictate the terms of my life.
This time, I would follow the people who could actually help protect my daughter.
At 7:42 a.m., Vanessa sent another message.
He just called me. He said Lily is with him.
My blood turned to ice.
I called her immediately.
"Did you hear Lily?""
"Yes. He put her on the phone for a few seconds.""
"What did she say?""
Vanessa began crying.
"She asked me where Nathan was. Then she asked whether she was going to see you again.""
I gripped the phone.
"Did you tell her yes?""
"I told her you loved her and that you were trying to get to her.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you.""
Vanessa's voice cracked.
"Sarah, she sounded so scared.""
I pressed my hand against my mouth.
"I know.""
Then Vanessa said, "Daniel told me something else. He said the airport staff couldn't stop him because he had all the documents.""
I immediately contacted Michael.
He said the authorities were checking the records and would not rely solely on documents Daniel had supplied.
At 7:49 a.m., a new message arrived from Daniel.
Gate B18. Come alone if you want to see your daughter.
I stared at the screen.
Michael called before I could respond.
"Do not go to that gate alone. This may be an attempt to draw you into a confrontation. The authorities are coordinating with airport personnel.""
"What if Lily is there?""
"We're trying to establish her location now.""
I paced the kitchen.
"I can't let him take her.""
"We are not asking you to give up. We're asking you to let us handle this in a way that protects you and Lily.""
I forced myself to breathe.
"Okay.""
At 7:56 a.m., the detective called.
"Mrs. Carter, we've confirmed that Daniel is at the airport. Airport officials are checking the travel documents and the circumstances surrounding the planned departure.""
"Is Lily with him?""
"We believe she is, but we're still confirming.""
I gripped the phone.
"Please find her.""
"We're working on it.""
Then he added, "We've also received the original electronic records for the disputed custody statement. The signature appears to have been inserted into the document after the file was created.""
I closed my eyes.
"So he forged it again.""
"The evidence is consistent with that possibility, but the document will need formal examination.""
"Can that stop him?""
"It strengthens the grounds for further intervention. The airport team has been informed.""
At 8:02 a.m., Emily's phone rang.
She answered, listened, then looked at me.
"It's Michael.""
I took the phone.
"What's happening?""
"Airport officials have located Daniel near the departure gate. He has been asked to wait while they verify the documents.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Is Lily with him?""
"Yes.""
I covered my mouth.
"Is she okay?""
"She's physically with him, and officials are checking on her welfare. We don't have further details yet.""
I began to cry.
Not because the danger was over.
Because for the first time that morning, I knew exactly where my daughter was.
Then Michael's voice became more serious.
"Sarah, Daniel has made a new allegation. He's claiming that you have a history of abandoning Lily and that you are currently a danger to her.""
I stared at Emily.
"He's trying to turn this around on me.""
"Yes. We have your timeline, the messages, and the documents you've provided. We will respond through the proper channels.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Will they let him board?""
"We don't know yet. The authorities are assessing the evidence and the applicable requirements.""
At 8:07 a.m., my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed Daniel's number.
I hesitated.
Michael had advised me not to engage, but I wanted to hear my daughter's voice.
I answered without speaking.
Daniel's voice came through, tight and angry.
"You've ruined everything.""
I swallowed.
"You did that yourself.""
"Lily is crying because of you.""
"Then let her come home.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You still don't understand. I was trying to give her a better life.""
"By telling her I was dead?""
"By getting her away from this mess!""
"You created the mess, Daniel.""
He lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what happens if I stay here.""
"Then tell the truth.""
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then I heard a small voice in the background.
"Mommy?""
My heart stopped.
"Lily?""
"Mommy, I'm here.""
I pressed the phone against my ear.
"I'm here, sweetheart. I'm right here.""
"I want to come home.""
Daniel snatched the phone away.
"That's enough.""
"Daniel, let me talk to her!""
He hung up.
I stood frozen, the phone pressed against my chest.
Emily wrapped her arms around me.
"He can't take her," she whispered.
I wanted to believe that.
At 8:11 a.m., Michael called.
"The departure process has been interrupted while the documents are reviewed. Daniel has been instructed to remain available to airport officials.""
I closed my eyes.
"Does that mean the flight is stopped?""
"It means the boarding process is being held pending the necessary checks. We still need confirmation of the final outcome.""
I sat down, trembling.
Then another call came through.
Detective Harris.
"Mrs. Carter, we need you to listen carefully. Daniel has now presented a second passport-related document that appears inconsistent with the records we've received.""
"What does it say?""
"It identifies Lily as a resident of Portugal and lists a different date of birth from her official birth certificate.""
My blood turned cold.
"Why would he change her date of birth?""
"We don't know yet.""
Then the detective said something that made me feel as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
"The document also lists a second child under Daniel's custody.""
I gripped the phone.
"Nathan?""
"No. Another child.""
I couldn't speak.
"Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you something. Has Daniel ever mentioned another child besides Lily and Nathan?""
I stared at Emily.
"No.""
May you like
The detective paused.
"Then we may have uncovered another part of his plan.""
