Chapter 9: The Secret in the Drive

The police arrived three minutes later.

But those three minutes felt like three years.

Vanessa didn’t run.

That scared me more than if she had.

A guilty person runs.

A desperate person fights.

But Vanessa simply stood there.

Waiting.

Like she knew something none of us knew.

Officers entered the house.

They separated everyone.

Questions came quickly.

Names.

Dates.

Explanations.

I answered everything.

The locked pantry.

The notebook.

The basement.

Emily.

Sarah.

Every word felt impossible.

But every piece of evidence was real.

One officer looked at the basement.

Then at me.

“Sir, we need everyone to stay where they are.””

I nodded.

I didn’t take my eyes off Vanessa.

She sat calmly on the couch.

Like she was waiting for a meeting.

Not an arrest.

One officer walked over.

“Ms. Vanessa Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You’re being detained while we investigate allegations of child abuse and unlawful confinement.””

She nodded.

That was it.

No screaming.

No begging.

Just a nod.

As they walked her toward the door, she looked at me.

“Watch the drive.””

I hated that I wanted to know.

But I did.

After Vanessa was taken away, I sat at Rachel’s house with Sarah, Lily, Mason, and Emily.

The flash drive sat on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Finally, Sarah spoke.

“Michael.””

I looked at her.

“You need to see it.””

“You know what’s on it?””

She nodded.

“I think so.””

I plugged it into my laptop.

There were only three files.

The first was a video.

I clicked.

Vanessa appeared on the screen.

Younger.

Maybe six years ago.

She was sitting in the same living room.

The room where we had celebrated birthdays.

Where Lily had opened Christmas presents.

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, then something happened.””

My skin crawled.

She continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

A pause.

“I didn’t choose Lily because I wanted a child.””

I looked at Sarah.

She covered her mouth.

“I chose Lily because of Michael.””

My heart stopped.

Vanessa smiled on the screen.

“I knew him before he knew me.””

The room became silent.

“What?”” I whispered.

Sarah looked at me.

“You didn’t know?””

I shook my head.

The video continued.

“I watched him after Sarah became distant.””

My stomach turned.

“That’s a lie.””

Sarah looked away.

“Michael…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

The video continued.

“Sarah didn’t appreciate him.””

Vanessa smiled.

“But I did.””

I closed the laptop.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I need a minute.””

But Sarah reached for my hand.

“Michael.””

I pulled away.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was overwhelmed.

“You knew she was watching us?””

Sarah’s eyes filled.

“No.””

“Then why did you hesitate?””

She looked down.

“Because…”

A long pause.

“Because before everything happened, I was going to leave.””

I felt like the room shifted.

“What?””

Sarah cried.

“I was depressed.””

She wiped her tears.

“I was struggling after Lily was born. I felt like I was failing.””

I stared at her.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was ashamed.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was different.

Vanessa hid things to control people.

Sarah hid things because she was hurting.

There was a difference.

I opened the laptop again.

The second file was audio.

Vanessa’s voice.

And another voice.

Sarah.

The recording was from years ago.

Sarah sounded terrified.

“You can’t do this.””

Vanessa replied:

“I already did.””

Sarah whispered:

“You ruined my life.””

Vanessa laughed.

“No. I improved it.””

Then Sarah said something that froze me.

“If anything happens to me, Michael will know.””

Vanessa answered:

“That’s why he won’t.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Emily quietly said:

“She always kept backups.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Emily pointed to the third file.

“Open that.””

I clicked.

It was a document.

A legal document.

My name was at the top.

I read the first line.

And my blood turned cold.

*Temporary guardianship transfer agreement.*

I scrolled down.

The signature section.

There were two signatures.

Vanessa.

And mine.

Except…

I never signed it.

My hands started shaking.

Sarah looked over my shoulder.

Then whispered:

“She forged your signature.””

I stared at the document.

Everything Vanessa had done.

Every lie.

Every manipulation.

Every moment.

It all led here.

She didn’t just want Lily.

She wanted my life.

My family.

My identity.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Michael.””

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who knows what Vanessa did before she met you.””

I stood.

“What do you want?””

The man lowered his voice.

“I want to help you.””

“Why?””

Because I knew this wasn’t over.

And the answer he gave proved it.

“Because Vanessa didn’t work alone.””

The line went silent.

May you like

Then he said:

“She had help from someone inside your family.””
