Chapter 9: The Transfer at Noon

At eight the next morning, Margaret sat across from Patricia Wells while the attorney reviewed the documents Rebecca had provided.

Thomas stood near the window, speaking quietly on his phone with the trust attorney. Rebecca sat beside Margaret, pale but composed, with her father's letter folded inside her handbag.

Daniel had arrived ten minutes earlier.

He had not tried to hug Margaret or ask for forgiveness. He simply took the chair nearest the door and waited for Patricia to tell him what information the investigators needed.

It was the first time Margaret had seen him accept a difficult situation without trying to control how everyone felt about it.

Patricia placed the appointment confirmation on the table.

“We have a potential attempted transfer scheduled for today,” she said.

“But we need to be precise. We don't yet know whether the meeting is intended to execute a fraudulent deed, obtain signatures under false pretenses, or accomplish something else.””

“Then what can we do?”” Margaret asked.

“We can notify the relevant authorities, preserve the documents, and make sure no one signs anything without independent legal advice. I also recommend that Rebecca formally withdraw any statement she believes was based on false information, through her own attorney.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I'll do that.””

Patricia turned to Daniel.

“Mr. Carter, you said Vanessa told you that the guardianship papers were merely preliminary?””

“Yes.””

“Did you read the documents before signing them?””

Daniel looked down.

“Some of them. Not all.””

“Did you understand that they could be used to support a claim that your mother lacked the capacity to manage her affairs?””

“No.””

“Did you tell anyone that your mother was incapable of managing her finances?””

“I told Vanessa I was worried about her after her stroke. I never said she couldn't manage her money.””

Patricia wrote something in her notebook.

“Your statements will need to be evaluated alongside the documents and any available communications. Do not delete messages, alter records, or coordinate accounts with Vanessa.””

Daniel nodded.

“I won't.””

Margaret watched him.

She wanted to believe this was the beginning of a real change.

But she knew the difference between a man who regretted being caught and a man who accepted responsibility.

Only time would reveal which one her son had become.

At nine fifteen, Patricia received a call from the investigator assigned to the financial concerns.

She listened carefully, asked several questions, and ended the call.

“The investigator is aware of the appointment,” she said.

“They have advised us not to interfere with any lawful investigative steps. We should not attempt to enter the meeting or seize documents ourselves.””

Thomas nodded.

“Understood.””

Margaret looked at Rebecca.

“Are you still willing to go?””

Rebecca swallowed.

“Yes.””

Patricia raised a hand.

“You are not obligated to meet Vanessa. If you do attend, you should have your own attorney and avoid signing anything. You can also decline to answer questions until you've received advice.””

Rebecca nodded.

“I want to know what she planned to do with my name.””

Margaret understood.

She wanted the same answer.

At ten thirty, Daniel's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen and immediately turned it toward Patricia.

A message from Vanessa.

*I need you at the office by eleven. Bring the blue folder. Your mother has no idea what Robert promised me. If you want to protect your children, do what I say.*

Margaret read it twice.

“She's still trying to use the children against you,” she said.

Daniel's face tightened.

“She knows that's the only thing that will make me panic.””

“What are you going to do?””

He looked at Patricia.

“Preserve the message and give it to the investigator.””

Patricia nodded.

“Good.””

Daniel forwarded the message to his attorney and the investigator, then placed his phone on the table.

He didn't reply.

At eleven fifteen, the group separated.

Patricia stayed at her office to coordinate with the investigator. Thomas accompanied Margaret and Rebecca to a nearby public location where they could wait safely.

Daniel remained with his attorney.

Nobody would confront Vanessa or attempt to stop the meeting themselves.

The decision felt unbearable to Margaret.

Every instinct told her to drive to the office, demand answers, and refuse to leave until Vanessa admitted what she had done.

But anger had already carried her into a kitchen where a child was being hurt.

This time, she would not allow anger to make her careless.

At eleven fifty, Rebecca received a message.

*I'm here. Come inside. Richard is ready.*

She showed it to Thomas.

He immediately contacted Patricia, who relayed the information to the investigator.

Rebecca's hands shook.

“What if she has already prepared everything?””

“Then don't sign anything,” Margaret said.

“What if she says I'm betraying her?””

Margaret looked at her.

“You don't owe loyalty to someone who asks you to participate in something you don't understand.””

Rebecca nodded.

Then she stood.

“I want to go in.””

Thomas accompanied her to the building, while Margaret remained nearby with Patricia's assistant, who had arrived to ensure that the family did not inadvertently interfere with the investigation.

From the outside, the office looked ordinary.

A glass door.

A small reception area.

A brass plaque bearing the name of a property consulting firm.

Rebecca entered first.

Thomas followed.

Inside, Vanessa sat at a conference table beside a man in his sixties wearing a charcoal suit. A thick folder lay open in front of him.

Vanessa looked up.

“Rebecca. Finally.””

Then she saw Thomas.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is he doing here?””

Rebecca took a seat.
