Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Curtain

The name on the report stayed in front of me.

I read it once.

Then again.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because some betrayals are so impossible that your mind searches for a mistake before it accepts the truth.

The name belonged to someone who had hugged Zoria that morning.

Someone who had smiled in every photograph.

Someone who had stood beneath the graduation sign while my daughter carried a tray of drinks.

Someone who had acted like they were celebrating her.

I looked at Michael.

“You’re saying this person investigated me?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know everything.””

I pushed the paper toward him.

“Then tell me what you do know.””

Michael took a breath.

“The investigation started almost a year ago.””

“Who hired them?””

“We traced the payment.””

“To who?””

His eyes moved to Zoria.

“Someone connected to your family.””

Zoria stared at the document.

“No.””

Her voice was small.

“No, that’s not possible.””

I looked at her.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the name.

“Zoria.””

She swallowed.

Then whispered:

“Kendra.””

The room became silent.

I felt like I had been punched.

“No.””

Zoria shook her head.

“No. She wouldn’t.””

Michael looked at me carefully.

“I’m not saying Kendra planned everything.””

“Then what are you saying?””

“I’m saying the trail leads to her.””

I stood.

My chair scraped against the floor.

“No.””

Michael didn’t move.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I looked at the papers.

“At my daughter?””

“No.””

“At the girl who just defended Zoria yesterday?””

Michael’s expression softened.

“Sometimes people are involved in things they don’t understand.””

I thought about Kendra.

Her tears.

Her apology.

The way she looked at Vanessa when she realized what her mother had done.

She had seemed guilty.

But not cruel.

“She told us the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Why would she do that if she was behind this?””

Michael looked down.

“That’s the question.””

I sat back down.

Because suddenly I remembered something.

Kendra’s words.

*I didn’t know she was going to use my laptop.*

At the time, I thought she meant Vanessa.

But what if she meant someone else?

I looked at Zoria.

“She recognized the name.””

She nodded.

“Kendra knows him.””

“Who?””

Zoria hesitated.

“Her uncle.””

My stomach tightened.

“Vanessa’s brother?””

“Yes.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Ethan?””

I looked at him.

“You know him?””

Michael nodded.

“I know of him.””

“What does that mean?””

“He has a history of getting involved in family disputes.””

I frowned.

“Why would he care about Zoria?””

Michael looked at the papers.

“Because he had something to gain.””

“What?””

He pointed at the report.

“Read the financial section.””

I scanned the page.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed a line.

A transfer.

A payment.

A company name.

My heart sank.

“This is…”

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Zoria.

“He was connected to the scholarship?””

“Not directly.””

“Then what?””

Michael’s voice became quiet.

“He was connected to the university.””

I read further.

The company was a consulting firm.

A firm that helped students with applications, admissions, and financial planning.

And the owner?

Ethan.

Vanessa’s brother.

My hands went cold.

“So he could access information.””

“Yes.””

“He knew about Zoria’s scholarship.””

“Yes.””

“He knew about her application.””

“Yes.””

“And he changed things.””

Michael looked at me.

“That’s what the evidence suggests.””

I closed my eyes.

The entire year replayed in my mind.

The strange emails.

The changed essay.

The scholarship withdrawal.

The hidden camera.

The messages.

It wasn’t random.

It was organized.

Someone had been moving pieces.

And Vanessa had been too focused on controlling Zoria to notice someone else was using her fear.

We drove back to the house without speaking.

The rain had stopped.

But everything felt darker.

When we arrived, Kendra was sitting on the front steps.

She stood immediately.

“Dad?””

The word surprised me.

Kendra had never called me that often.

Not because we weren’t close.

But because she always called me Daniel.

She looked at my face.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

Her expression changed.

“Is it about Mom?””

“No.””

A pause.

“Is it about me?””

That caught me.

Because it sounded like she already knew.

“Kendra.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

I stared.

“You know what?””

Her eyes filled.

“You found Ethan.””

I froze.

“How do you know that name?””

She swallowed.

“Because he came to the house.””

Zoria stepped forward.

“When?””

Kendra looked at her.

“Last week.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“He said he was checking something for Mom.””

“What something?””

“I don’t know.””

“You didn’t ask?””

“I did.””

“What did he say?””

Kendra looked ashamed.

“He said it was none of my business.””

I studied her.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

She looked at Zoria.

“Because I was scared.””

Again.

That word.

Everyone had been scared.

But fear had become an excuse.

An excuse for silence.

An excuse for lies.

“What did he do?””

Kendra took a shaky breath.

“He asked me if Zoria was still planning to leave.””

My chest tightened.

“Leave?””

“Go to Westbridge.””

“And?””

“He said if she left, everything would change.””

Zoria stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Kendra shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then she whispered:

“But I heard him talking to Mom.””

I looked at her.

“What did he say?””

Kendra’s eyes filled with tears.

“He said, ‘You should have let me handle this from the beginning.’”

The words made my blood run cold.

Handle this.

Not help.

Not fix.

Handle.

“What did Vanessa say?””

Kendra looked at the ground.

“She said she never wanted it to go this far.””

Silence.

Because that was the first thing Vanessa had said that sounded like regret.

Not innocence.

Regret.

I walked inside.

Vanessa was sitting at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had aged years in a single day.

She looked up when she saw us.

“Where did you go?””

I placed the report on the table.

Her face changed.

She knew.

“You found out.””

Not a question.

A confession.

“Ethan.””

Her eyes closed.

“I didn’t know.””

“Stop.””

I sat across from her.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

She looked at Zoria.

“I didn’t know what he was planning.””

“But you knew he was involved.””

Silence.

“Vanessa.””

She wiped her face.

“Yes.””

Zoria looked hurt.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Ethan was the one who told me Michael had started asking questions.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

Zoria laughed sadly.

“Everyone is scared.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

Zoria shook her head.

“You were trying to protect yourself.””

The truth hurt Vanessa.

I could see it.

But she didn’t argue.

“What did Ethan want?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He said if Zoria left for Westbridge, Michael would find a way to tell her everything.””

“And?””

“And he said our family would fall apart.””

I stared.

“So he convinced you to stop her.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“At first, I only wanted to delay things.””

“And then?””

She looked down.

“Then he started doing things without telling me.””

“What things?””

“The emails.””

“The account access?””

She nodded.

“I thought he was just trying to scare her into reconsidering.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You thought stealing her future was a warning?””

“I didn’t know.””

“You knew enough.””

She looked at Zoria.

“I’m sorry.””

Zoria’s expression didn’t change.

“Why didn’t you tell me about my father?””

Vanessa cried.

“Because I was afraid you would leave.””

“I was going to college.””

“I know.””

“That isn’t leaving.””

“I know that now.””

Zoria looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Michael.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice was urgent.

“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“I found something else.””

“What?””

A pause.

“Ethan wasn’t working alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Michael lowered his voice.

“The scholarship wasn’t just about keeping Zoria home.””

“Then what was it about?””

Another pause.

Then:

“It was about money.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What money?””

“The scholarship fund.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Westbridge has a donor program. A student who accepts certain scholarships becomes part of a long-term research partnership.””

“I don’t understand.””

Michael continued.

“Zoria’s scholarship wasn’t just tuition.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What was it?””

“Ownership.””

The word chilled me.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone wanted control over her future.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Michael was silent.

Then he said:

“The person who funded the scholarship.””

I waited.

“Daniel…”

“Who?””

His answer came quietly.

And when he said the name, I felt the entire world stop.

Because the person behind the scholarship…

the person who had the power to rewrite Zoria’s future…

was someone I trusted more than anyone.

May you like

Michael whispered:

“The donor was Vanessa Bennett.””
