Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Came Back to Destroy Us

The video ended before I could see who had been shot.

I demanded that the detective replay it, but the screen displayed only an error message. The railway station's security system had gone offline.

“Get me a car,” I said.

The detective shook his head.

“Units are already on their way.””

“Then I'll go with them.””

He hesitated.

“Mr. Hale, if Brielle is involved, this may be a coordinated ambush.””

“That's my son on that platform.””

He didn't argue again.

Within minutes, we were racing toward the station with sirens cutting through the night.

Daniel sat beside me, his face pale.

“Brielle can't be Grace,” he muttered.

“Eleanor confirmed it.””

“She was never supposed to know.””

“Apparently, everyone knows something except me.””

Daniel looked out the window.

“I knew Brielle before you met her. She was working as an assistant in one of Alexander's companies. She told me she had no family.””

“Did you recognize her?””

“No. She used another surname, and she looked different when she was younger.””

I turned toward him.

“Why did you never investigate?””

“Because I thought Grace had been sent overseas.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's the problem with our family. Everyone thinks someone else is taking care of the truth.””

The car swung into the station parking lot.

Police officers were already moving across the platform. An ambulance stood near the entrance, its lights flashing against the wet pavement.

I ran toward the tracks.

“Anna!””

A figure emerged from behind a pillar.

Brielle.

Her wedding dress was gone. She wore black trousers, a dark coat, and gloves. Blood streaked one sleeve.

The ledger was tucked beneath her arm.

I stopped several feet away.

“Where is Ethan?””

She looked at me without expression.

“Safe.””

“Where?””

“Somewhere Alexander can't reach him.””

“Where is Anna?””

Brielle's jaw tightened.

“Alive.””

I stared at the blood on her sleeve.

“Whose blood is that?””

She looked down.

“Mine.””

I didn't believe her.

“Show me your hands.””

She slowly removed her gloves.

A deep cut crossed her palm.

“Happy?””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You tried to have me removed from my own wedding. You threatened Lily. You pointed a gun at me. And now you're telling me you're protecting my son?””

Brielle's eyes flashed.

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

“You terrified her.””

“I was trying to keep her from being used.””

“By whom?””

“By everyone!””

Her voice cracked across the empty platform.

She dropped the ledger onto a bench.

“You think you're the only person who lost something? Eleanor stole my identity. Alexander turned me into a weapon.

Daniel let me believe my mother abandoned me. And you—”

She pointed at me.

“You walked into that church ready to marry the woman who had spent years trying to find you.””

I stared at her.

“Anna?””

Brielle nodded.

“She was my mother.””

The world seemed to stop.

“Your mother is Anna?””

“Yes.””

“But Eleanor said you were Grace.””

“I am Grace. Anna gave birth to me before she had Lily and Ethan. She had to give me up because Alexander was hunting her. Eleanor arranged the adoption and promised to keep me safe.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

Brielle looked away.

“Because I needed access to your company records. I thought you were the only person who could help me find the original ledger.””

“You could have told me.””

“And risked you remembering everything before I knew who was watching you?””

“You could have told me the truth.””

She laughed without humor.

“You were in love with me, Marcus. You trusted me. If I'd told you that I was the daughter your family erased, would you have believed me?””

I had no answer.

She picked up the ledger and opened it to a marked page.

“Look at this.””

The page contained a list of transactions made over thirty-five years. Several names were highlighted, including Eleanor's, Alexander's, and a company Daniel had once managed.

But one entry was different.

It was dated three years earlier.

The night of my accident.

Beside it was a transfer for ten million dollars, authorized under my signature.

I stared at the page.

“I never approved this.””

“I know,” Brielle said.

“Your signature was forged.””

“By whom?””

She turned the page.

A photograph had been clipped to the ledger.

It showed a man standing beside my car shortly before the crash.

Daniel.

I looked up sharply.

“That's impossible.””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“He was there that night.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I was trying to stop the driver.””

“Then why did you leave Marcus in the car?””

“I didn't!””

Brielle pulled a second photograph from her pocket.

This one showed Daniel standing beside Eleanor outside the hospital, holding a small bundle wrapped in a blue blanket.

A newborn.

My newborn.

The image was dated three years earlier.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is that baby?””

His face crumpled.

“Ethan.””

My throat tightened.

“You were there when my son was born?””

Daniel nodded.

“Anna gave birth in secret because Alexander had discovered she was pregnant. I helped her hide the baby until the night of your accident.””

“Then why did you tell me you didn't know about Ethan?””

“Because I thought Anna had taken him somewhere safe. I didn't know she was still being hunted.””

I turned back to Brielle.

“Where is he?””

She closed the ledger.

“Before I tell you, you need to understand why Anna disappeared.””

“I'm listening.””

Brielle took a shaky breath.

“Three years ago, Anna found evidence that Alexander had arranged Thomas Reed's disappearance. She also discovered that Eleanor had helped him conceal the truth about your adoption.””

“And the accident?””

“Anna believes Alexander ordered the driver to stop you from reaching the police. Eleanor made a separate arrangement to ensure you wouldn't remember what you had discovered.””

I stared at the photograph of Daniel.

“Was he involved?””

“No. He tried to save you. But he arrived too late.””

Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“I pulled you out of the car, Marcus. I held you until the ambulance arrived. You kept asking for Anna. You kept saying you needed to find your daughter.””

I felt a memory stir.

Daniel's voice.

Rain on my face.

A woman's hand slipping from mine.

Then darkness.

I gripped the bench.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Eleanor said the truth would destroy you. And because I was ashamed that I had let you grow up believing I was your brother.””

I looked at Brielle.

“What happened to Anna after the accident?””

“She went into hiding. She believed you were dead. When she discovered you had survived, Eleanor convinced her that you had lost your memory permanently and would never recognize her.””

“That was a lie.””

“Yes.””

Brielle's voice softened.

“She tried to contact you twice. Both times, someone intercepted her messages. Eventually, she realized the only way to reach you was through Lily.””

I looked down the platform.

“Then why did she leave Lily at the church?””

“Because she knew you would protect her. She also knew Eleanor wouldn't risk exposing herself in front of three hundred witnesses.””

I swallowed.

“And the gun?””

Brielle looked ashamed.

“It wasn't loaded. I wanted you to believe I was dangerous so you would stay away from the safe until I could get the ledger.””

“You could have killed someone.””

“I know.””

For the first time, I saw the frightened young woman beneath her calculated cruelty.

But understanding her reasons didn't erase what she had done.

“Where is Anna now?””

Brielle looked toward the tracks.

“She went after Alexander.””

My heart stopped.

“Alone?””

“She believed he had Ethan.””

“Does he?””

Brielle shook her head.

“Not anymore.””

“Then where is my son?””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

An address.

A small farmhouse outside town.

“Anna left him with someone she trusts,” she said.

“She told me to give you this if anything happened.””

I took the paper.

“Why didn't you tell me sooner?””

“Because the last thing Anna asked me was to make sure you understood one thing.””

“What?””

Brielle's eyes filled with tears.

“She said that if you ever remembered everything, you would have to choose between the family you built and the family you lost.””

I looked at the ledger.

At the photographs.

At the names that had shaped my life without my knowledge.

Then my phone rang.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

“Marcus Hale. You have something that belongs to me.””

“Alexander.””

“Very good. You're learning.””

“Where is Anna?””

A brief chuckle.

“Your wife is with me.””

My blood turned cold.

“Let her go.””

“I will. In exchange for the ledger.””

I looked at Brielle.

She shook her head urgently.

Alexander continued.

“You have until sunrise. Bring the original ledger to the old Hale estate. Come alone.””

“And if I refuse?””

His voice became colder.

“Then Anna dies.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless on the platform.

Brielle gripped my arm.

“Don't go.””

I looked at her.

“She's my wife.””

“And Alexander is waiting for you.””

“Then he'll have to wait.””

I handed the ledger to the detective and called the farmhouse address Brielle had given me.

A woman answered.

When I asked whether Ethan was there, she said yes.

I heard a child's laughter in the background.

For the first time in three years, I heard my son's voice.

I nearly collapsed.

“Keep him safe,” I whispered.

“I will,” the woman promised.

I ended the call and looked toward the dark tracks.

I had my son.

I had the evidence.

And I finally knew who had betrayed me.

But as the police prepared to move, Brielle took my hand.

“There is one more thing,” she whispered.

“What?””

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Alexander isn't holding Anna.””

I froze.

“Then who is?””

May you like

Brielle swallowed hard.

“Your mother.””
