Chapter 7: The Hospital of Secrets
At 11:24 p.m., I stood in a motel bathroom, staring at my reflection while the water ran in the sink.
Thirty-six minutes.
That was all the time I had before Richard Cole expected me to arrive at the hospital where my son had been born, where my wife had begged for help, and where someone had apparently decided that my family could be divided like property.
I slipped Emily's original letter into the inside pocket of my jacket.
Then I stopped.
Richard had specifically demanded the letter.
Not the hospital records. Not the adoption papers. Not the photographs.
The letter.
Whatever Emily had written, it frightened him more than anything else I possessed.
I pulled it out and read the final paragraph again.
If anything happens to me, Daniel, please remember that I did everything I could to bring our son home.
There was no mention of Richard.
No explanation of the accident.
Just a desperate promise from a woman who had known she might never see her family again.
I folded the letter carefully.
Behind me, Patricia appeared in the doorway.
“You can't go alone,” she said.
“He asked me to come alone.””
“Richard has spent seventeen years manipulating people. Do you honestly believe he'll keep his word?””
“No.””
“Then why are you going?””
I met her eyes.
“Because Ethan is my son.””
Patricia looked toward the other room, where Nia sat on the bed with her backpack beside her.
“And your daughter is your daughter,” she said quietly.
“If something happens to you, she'll lose another parent.””
The words struck harder than I expected.
I looked through the doorway.
Nia had fallen asleep sitting upright, her head tilted against a pillow. She was still wearing the clothes she'd put on after leaving home. Emily's photograph rested against her chest.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
I'd promised that girl I'd always be there when she woke up.
I couldn't break that promise.
I crouched beside her and gently brushed a strand of hair from her forehead.
“Nia,” I whispered.
Her eyes opened.
“Daddy?””
“I need you to do something important for me.””
She sat up immediately.
“Are we going to find Ethan?””
“Yes.””
“Can I come?””
“No, sweetheart.””
Her face fell.
“Why not?””
“Because I need you somewhere safe while I bring him home.””
She stared at me for several seconds.
Then she reached into her backpack and took out Emily's photograph.
“Take Mommy with you.””
My throat tightened.
I accepted the picture.
“I will.””
Nia threw her arms around my neck.
“Please bring my brother home.””
I held her for a long time.
“I promise I'll do everything I can.””
Patricia agreed to take Nia to the home of a retired colleague she trusted, a woman named Helen who had once worked with Emily. We would call the police if Richard failed to release Ethan by midnight.
I didn't like leaving my daughter with someone she barely knew.
But Patricia assured me Helen had been expecting us and had already prepared a room.
At 11:41 p.m., I left the motel.
I carried the original letter, the photograph of Ethan, and a small recorder I'd borrowed from Patricia.
I didn't know whether the recording would help me, but I wasn't going to let Richard control the evidence again.
The hospital stood at the edge of the city, its upper floors dark against the cloudy sky. The maternity wing had been renovated since Emily gave birth, but the old emergency entrance remained beside the ambulance bay.
A black sedan waited outside.
Richard stood beneath the canopy, checking his watch.
He wore a charcoal overcoat and the same silver watch I'd recognized in the photograph.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Daniel. I'm glad you came.””
“Where's my son?””
“Straight to business. I suppose I shouldn't expect anything else.””
He extended his hand.
I ignored it.
“Where is Ethan?””
Richard's smile disappeared.
“Inside. He's unharmed.””
“Then take me to him.””
“First, the letter.””
I kept my hand inside my jacket.
“You'll show me Ethan before I give you anything.””
Richard studied me.
“You've become very difficult.””
“You've stolen seventeen years from my family.””
“I saved your son.””
“You forged my wife's signature.””
“I made a decision that the adults around me were too emotional to make.””
I stepped closer.
“You had no right.””
Richard adjusted his cuff.
“Rights are complicated things, Daniel. The law is not always as simple as you would like it to be.””
“Funny. I don't remember asking you for a legal opinion.””
His jaw tightened.
For the first time, the polished businessman disappeared, revealing the impatient man beneath.
“Your son was sick. The Whitmores had money, connections, and access to the best doctors. Emily was desperate, and you were struggling to keep your company afloat. I gave the boy a chance at life.””
“You lied to everyone.””
“I did what was necessary.””
The same words I'd heard in the recording.
My stomach turned.
“And when Emily tried to bring him home?””
Richard looked away for half a second.
“She became unreasonable.””
“She became a mother.””
“She threatened to expose a situation that could have destroyed an entire hospital.””
“You mean your reputation.””
He gave a humorless laugh.
“You have no idea how many people would have suffered if she had gone to the police.””
“Did you kill her?””
Richard's expression went perfectly still.
The wind moved beneath the canopy.
Then he leaned toward me.
“Be very careful what you accuse me of.””
I stared at him.
“That isn't an answer.””
“No,” he said.
“It's a warning.””
I took out the letter but kept my fingers wrapped around it.
“Show me Ethan.””
Richard glanced at the paper.
Then he nodded toward the entrance.
“Come inside.””
We walked through the hospital corridors, past the reception desk and a row of empty waiting chairs. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead.
Every step brought back memories I didn't want.
Emily's final visit.
The unanswered questions.
The years I'd spent believing I had lost everything I could possibly lose.
Richard stopped beside a door marked STORAGE.
He unlocked it.
Inside, a single light illuminated a metal table and two chairs.
Ethan sat in one of them.
His hands were free.
His face was pale, and a bruise darkened his left cheekbone, but he was alive.
He looked up when I entered.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
I had imagined this moment a thousand different ways during the drive.
I'd imagined anger, tears, questions.
I hadn't imagined how difficult it would be to stand in front of my own child and realize he had no reason to trust me.
“Ethan,” I said softly.
He stared at me.
“Who are you?””
The question nearly broke me.
“My name is Daniel Hayes.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Vanessa said you'd come.””
“She was right.””
“Are you my father?””
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
He looked away.
“Then why did you leave me?””
I took a step forward.
“I didn't know you existed until today.””
“That's what everyone says when they don't want to admit what they did.””
“I know you have every reason not to believe me.””
“Do you?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I spent seventeen years thinking my mother didn't want me. My adoptive parents told me she was dead. Vanessa told me my father had abandoned me. And now you're standing here telling me you didn't even know I was born.””
I felt the words like blows.
“I can't give you back those years,” I said.
“But I can tell you the truth about what happened.””
He looked at me.
“Then tell me why my mother died.””
Before I could answer, Richard closed the door behind us.
“That's enough.””
Ethan flinched.
Richard walked toward the table and held out his hand.
“The letter, Daniel.””
I looked at my son.
Then at Richard.
“No.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“You have no idea what you're risking.””
“I know exactly what I'm risking.””
I pulled the recorder from my pocket and placed it on the table.
“And I know what you're afraid of.””
Richard's eyes dropped to the device.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely frightened.
Ethan noticed.
“What is that?””
I pressed the button.
Emily's voice filled the room.
“If anything happens to me, Daniel will find out.””
Richard lunged for the recorder.
I grabbed his wrist.
“Don't touch it.””
His face twisted with fury.
“You stupid, sentimental fool.””
He shoved me backward into the table.
Ethan jumped to his feet.
“Get away from him!””
Richard turned toward the door.
“Call security!””
But before he could reach it, the handle turned from the other side.
The door swung open.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, breathing hard.
Behind her were two uniformed police officers.
And in her trembling hand was a document I recognized immediately.
Emily's original death report.
Vanessa looked directly at her father.
“It's over, Dad.””
Richard's face turned white.
May you like
Then she said something I never expected to hear.
“I know what you did to Emily.””
