Chapter 8: The Mother Who Came Back
The hospital bracelet changed everything.
Or maybe it only exposed how much I had been lied to.
I held it beneath the light.
*NIA REED — NOVEMBER 14, 2009.*
My daughter's birthday had always been June 21, 2010.
I had watched her come into the world.
I remembered the hospital room.
The nurses.
Elena's hand squeezing mine.
The first time I held Nia.
Except now those memories felt like photographs someone had edited.
Daniel took the bracelet.
“Where did you find this?””
“Nia had it.””
“No.””
He stared at the name.
“This is impossible.””
I looked at him.
“You've used that word a lot tonight.””
“Because it is.””
“Then explain it.””
He shook his head.
“I can't.””
“Try.””
Before he could answer, the police entered the house.
An officer shouted my name.
“Marcus!””
“Upstairs!””
He and another officer climbed into the hidden nursery.
They looked around.
One of them stopped when he saw the television.
“What's this?””
I didn't answer.
The officer lifted the photograph.
“Sir, we need to leave.””
“Why?””
“We found a vehicle outside.””
“Whose?””
“Vanessa's.””
I looked toward the window.
“Is she here?””
“No.””
“Then what's the problem?””
The officer's expression tightened.
“The vehicle is registered to a man named Daniel Reed.””
Everyone looked at my brother.
Daniel went still.
“That isn't possible.””
The officer pulled out a photograph.
“You're Daniel Reed?””
“Yes.””
“You've been reported dead for twelve years.””
Daniel stared at him.
“I know.””
The officer reached for his handcuffs.
I stepped between them.
“Wait.””
“Sir, move aside.””
“He's my brother.””
“We'll sort that out at the station.””
Daniel didn't resist.
But before the officer could cuff him, he looked at me.
“Don't let them take Nia.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
He didn't answer.
The officer pulled him away.
Nia grabbed my arm.
“Dad.””
“I'm here.””
“Where's Ava?””
I had no answer.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's breathing.
Then:
“Marcus.””
My heart stopped.
“Elena?””
“Yes.””
“Where is Ava?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“I can't tell you yet.””
“You don't get to keep doing this.””
“I know.””
“You've been alive for six years.””
“I know.””
“You let me grieve you.””
“I know.””
My voice broke.
“Then tell me why.””
There was silence.
Finally, Elena said,
“Because the day I disappeared, I was told Nia had been taken.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Who told you?””
“Vanessa.””
“She lied.””
“I know that now.””
“Where were you?””
“At the old house.””
“When?””
“November 14.””
I looked at the bracelet.
“You were there when Nia was born?””
Elena went silent.
Then she whispered,
“No.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“I gave birth to another child that night.””
I couldn't breathe.
“What?””
“A girl.””
I looked at Nia.
“Where is she?””
Elena's voice trembled.
“She died.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
“I held her.””
“No.””
“She lived for six minutes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then who is Nia?””
Elena began crying.
“The girl you raised.””
My mind couldn't process it.
“Nia is your daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“I was told she was the baby who died.””
I looked at the hospital bracelet.
Elena continued.
“They switched the babies.””
“Who?””
“Vanessa.””
“Why?””
“Because she needed a living child with a particular identity.””
I stared at Nia.
“Why Nia?””
“She wasn't supposed to be called Nia.””
“What was her name?””
Elena took a shaky breath.
“Amara.””
Nia looked at me.
“That's my name?””
“No.””
Elena spoke again.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
“She had a twin.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at the two cribs.
Two babies.
Two names.
Nia.
Ava.
Elena whispered,
“Your daughters were twins.””
I couldn't speak.
“Ava and Nia were born on the same night.””
“That can't be.””
“It can.””
“You said Ava was born in 2017.””
“That was the identity they gave her.””
My legs weakened.
“Then who is Ava?””
Elena was silent.
I already knew the answer.
But I needed to hear it.
“Elena.””
“She is not your biological daughter.””
The words landed like a gunshot.
“But Nia is?””
“Yes.””
I looked at my daughter.
She was staring at me, terrified.
“Then why did you say Ava was with you?””
“Because she is.””
“Why?””
“Because she's my daughter too.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything suddenly connected.
The photograph.
The two babies.
The false birth dates.
The blue box.
The warning.
Only one was supposed to survive.
“Elena,” I whispered, “who was supposed to die?””
She didn't answer.
“Which daughter?””
Still nothing.
Then I heard a child's voice in the background.
“Mom?””
Ava.
My daughter.
My little girl.
I almost dropped the phone.
“Ava?””
“Daddy?””
“Baby, are you okay?””
“Yes.””
“Where are you?””
“I don't know.””
“Is Mom with you?””
“Yes.””
I heard Elena take the phone.
“Marcus, you need to listen carefully.””
“I'm listening.””
“Vanessa wasn't trying to kill Nia.””
“Then what was she doing?””
“She was trying to find out which child had the original identity.””
I frowned.
“Why does that matter?””
“Because one of them inherited something.””
“What?””
“A key.””
“To what?””
“A bank account.””
I almost laughed.
After everything, it came down to money.
“How much?””
“Enough to make people kill for it.””
“Where is it?””
“Inside the child's original birth record.””
I looked at the hospital bracelet.
“Then the records are the key.””
“Yes.””
“Who has them?””
“Elena.””
A man's voice suddenly shouted in the background.
“Get away from the phone!””
Elena screamed.
The call dropped.
I called again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
*COME TO THE HOSPITAL. ALONE.*
Below it:
*BRING THE GIRL WITH THE ORIGINAL NAME.*
I stared at the screen.
Nia whispered,
“Dad?””
I turned.
“Which girl?””
The message disappeared.
Then another arrived.
*YOU KNOW WHICH ONE.*
I looked at Nia.
Then at Ava's empty bedroom upstairs.
For the first time, I wondered whether I had spent eight years calling one daughter by the wrong name.
And whether the other daughter had been carrying a stolen identity all along.
The police officer returned.
“Marcus.””
I looked at him.
“We need you to come with us.””
“Why?””
He held up a photograph.
It was Vanessa.
But beside her was a second woman.
A woman I recognized immediately.
Elena.
The officer said,
“We found this in Vanessa's car.””
I took it.
On the back was a hospital address.
And one handwritten sentence:
*The truth about the girls is in Room 214.*
I looked at Nia.
“Stay behind me.””
She nodded.
Then the officer added quietly,
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
“The hospital called.””
My heart stopped.
“They said a woman matching Elena's description was admitted thirty minutes ago.””
I stared at him.
“Is she alive?””
“Yes.””
“Where is she now?””
The officer's face tightened.
“She left Room 214.””
“With Ava?””
“No.””
“Then who was with her?””
He looked at Nia.
“A man.””
“What man?””
The officer lowered his voice.
“He gave the hospital a name.””
May you like
I waited.
“Daniel Reed.””
