Chapter 9: The Secret Camille Kept

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of Michael and Vanessa outside the courthouse. Then I saw Elena's handwriting, the forged signatures, and the message Lauren had delivered.

The person who changed the documents was someone Elena trusted enough to give them the originals.

Camille had handled Elena's paperwork.

Camille had access to the trust documents.

And Camille had kept the copies in her safe for seven years.

I hated myself for suspecting her.

But after everything I'd discovered, I couldn't afford to ignore another possibility simply because it was painful.

At six in the morning, I went downstairs.

Camille was already in the kitchen, sitting at the table with a mug of tea. She looked up when I entered.

“You didn't sleep.””

“Neither did you.””

She glanced at the chair across from her.

“Sit down.””

I remained standing.

“Did you ever alter Elena's trust documents?””

Camille's face went completely still.

For a moment, I thought she might slap me.

Then she lowered her eyes.

“Who told you that?””

“A former employee of Michael's. She says someone changed the original documents before Elena died.””

Camille placed her mug on the table.

“And you think it was me.””

“I don't want to think that. But I need to ask.””

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she said, “No, Andre. I did not alter the documents.””

I exhaled, but she raised a hand before I could speak.

“However, there is something I haven't told you.””

My stomach tightened again.

“What?””

Camille stood, walked to the kitchen window, and stared out at the backyard.

“The night before Elena died, she asked me to remove the original trust papers from her hospital room.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“She said she was afraid someone would take them.””

“Who?””

“She didn't know for certain. She suspected Michael, but she also worried that Vanessa might have access to his files.””

Camille turned toward me.

“I took the papers to my house and put them in a locked box. The next morning, I brought them back to Mr. Bennett's office, where he confirmed that the copies I had were consistent with the documents Elena had prepared.””

“Then what was altered?””

“I don't know. I never touched the originals after that.””

I rubbed my face.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Elena made me promise not to involve you until Mr. Bennett could secure the estate. She was afraid you'd confront Michael without evidence.””

I looked down.

That sounded exactly like something I'd have done.

I'd always been quick to confront problems head-on, believing that directness was the same as strength. Elena had often told me that not every battle could be won by charging into the room.

Camille pulled out a chair.

“Sit down, Andre. There's more.””

I sat.

She reached into a drawer and removed a small notebook.

It was not Elena's blue notebook. This one had a black cover and a faded elastic band.

“What's that?””

“My notes from the week Elena died.””

She opened it to a page marked with a folded receipt.

“I wrote down every person who came into the hospital room. I wanted to remember who had access to the documents in case something went missing.””

She slid the notebook toward me.

The list contained four names.

Mine.

Camille's.

Michael's.

And Vanessa's.

Beside Vanessa's name was a note:

Asked to be alone with Elena. Nurse refused.

I stared at the words.

“Did Vanessa get into the room?””

“Not that time. But she returned later with Michael.””

Camille pointed to the final entry.

Michael said Andre had authorized him to collect the estate paperwork. Elena refused.

My hands tightened.

“So Elena confronted him.””

“Yes. She told him she knew the authorization was false.””

“What happened next?””

Camille swallowed.

“He left. Vanessa stayed in the corridor. I heard her say something to him, but I couldn't make out the words.””

I leaned forward.

“Why didn't you tell me any of this?””

Camille's eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid. Not of Michael. Not of Vanessa. I was afraid you'd think I was trying to destroy your marriage before it even began.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at my sister, seeing the exhaustion in her face and the years of hurt behind her careful expression.

“I did think that,” I admitted.

“When you warned me about Vanessa, I thought you were jealous of my new life. I thought you couldn't accept that I was moving forward.””

Camille wiped her cheek.

“And I thought you were so desperate to believe you'd found happiness that you'd rather lose your sister than question it.””

Neither of us spoke.

Then I reached across the table and took her hand.

“I'm sorry.””

She squeezed my fingers.

“I'm sorry, too. I should have found another way to protect Maya.””

We sat together for a moment, two siblings finally acknowledging the damage that had grown between them.

Then my phone rang.

The caller was Lauren.

I put her on speaker.

“Mr. Carter, I'm sorry I hung up yesterday. Someone came into my office, and I panicked.””

“Who?””

“My former supervisor. He works for Michael's company.””

“Did he know you called me?””

“I don't think so. But I need to tell you something before I lose my nerve.””

I glanced at Camille.

“Go ahead.””

“Seven years ago, Michael asked me to prepare a set of revised estate documents. He said they were authorized by the family and that the lawyer had approved them.””

My pulse quickened.

“What did the revisions do?””

“They changed who could receive information about Maya's trust and gave an outside representative more influence over certain decisions.””

“Who was the representative?””

Lauren hesitated.

“Vanessa.””

Camille closed her eyes.

I gripped the phone.

“Did you prepare the documents?””

“I prepared the draft. I didn't sign anything, and I never saw proof of authorization. When I asked Michael about it, he told me to stop asking questions.””

“Did you keep copies?””

“Yes. I saved the original email instructions and the draft documents.””

“Where are they?””

“In a secure storage account. I can send them to your attorney.””

“Please do.””

Lauren's voice trembled.

“There's something else. The draft contained a note from Michael. He said Vanessa needed access because she would eventually become your wife.””

I looked at Camille.

There it was again.

The marriage wasn't simply an opportunity that appeared after Elena died.

Someone had anticipated it.

But I still needed to understand the motive.

“Lauren, did Michael and Vanessa have a relationship before he introduced us?””

“Yes.””

“Were they engaged?””

“I believe so. They broke up publicly, but they continued communicating privately. I saw emails about money and a property deal.””

“What property deal?””

“I don't know all the details. But Michael mentioned a commercial development owned partly by Elena's family. He believed the property would become extremely valuable once the surrounding land was rezoned.””

I remembered Mr. Bennett's explanation.

The investment holding.

The commercial property.

Maya's future inheritance.

Lauren continued.

“Michael thought that if he could influence the estate documents, he could gain control over the family's interest in the development. Vanessa was supposed to help him.””

I felt sick.

“Was the money transferred?””

“I don't know. But I can tell you this: after Elena died, Michael told me the plan had changed. He said Vanessa would marry you, and then everything would become easier.””

The exact words from the handwritten note.

I closed my eyes.

“Thank you, Lauren. Please send everything to the attorney. Don't contact Michael again.””

When the call ended, Camille looked at me.

“Do you think Vanessa ever loved you?””

I stared at the table.

“I don't know what she felt. I know what she did.””

It was the only answer I trusted.

By late morning, our attorney had received Lauren's documents. He reviewed them and confirmed that they provided grounds for a formal investigation into possible fraud and attempted interference with the estate.

He also warned us not to assume every suspicious act had been carried out by the same person.

That distinction mattered.

Michael might have planned the scheme.

Vanessa might have helped him.

But we still didn't know who had altered the original documents, or whether anyone had actually gained control over the property interest.

At noon, I called Vanessa again.

She answered in a whisper.

“Andre, please. We need to talk.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I've already told you.””

“No. You've given me explanations that change every time I show you another document.””

She began to cry.

“I made mistakes.””

“Did you marry me because of Maya's inheritance?””

“No.””

“Did you know Michael was trying to gain control of the estate?””

Silence.

“Vanessa?””

Finally, she whispered, “I knew he wanted to protect his investment.””

“Your investment?””

“Our investment,” she snapped, then immediately fell silent.

I felt my heart sink.

“Thank you.””

“Wait. Andre, please. That's not what I meant.””

“You just admitted there was an investment.””

“I meant the company. Michael said the money would help the business. He told me the estate arrangement was only temporary.””

“And the forged signature?””

“I didn't forge your signature.””

“Then who did?””

She began breathing rapidly.

“I don't know.””

“Who altered the documents?””

“I don't know!””

Her voice cracked.

Then she said something that stopped me cold.

“But I know who took the originals from Elena's room.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Camille.””

I looked across the kitchen at my sister.

Camille stared back at me, her face unreadable.

Vanessa continued.

“She took them the night before Elena died. Michael told me he saw her carrying a folder out of the hospital. He said she must have changed something because she was angry that Elena had left the money to Maya.””

I couldn't speak.

Camille slowly shook her head.

“That's not true,” she mouthed.

Vanessa's voice became desperate.

“Andre, you have to believe me. I didn't know Michael was doing anything illegal. I thought he was helping us. I thought the documents were legitimate.””

“You kept Elena's letter from Maya.””

“I was afraid!””

“Of what?””

Vanessa sobbed.

“Of losing everything!””

I stared at the phone.

“Everything you built with me?””

She didn't answer.

“Or everything you thought you could get from me?””

Her silence told me more than her tears.

I ended the call.

Camille stood motionless by the kitchen counter.

“Did you take the original documents?”” I asked.

“Yes,” she said.

“But I returned them to Mr. Bennett. He verified that they were intact.””

“Did you ever change anything?””

“No.””

I wanted to believe her.

But I needed more than trust now.

I needed proof.

Before I could speak again, the doorbell rang.

Devin went to answer it.

A moment later, he returned holding a large padded envelope addressed to me.

“No return address,” he said.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten note.

The photograph showed Camille standing outside the hospital on the morning Elena died, carrying a black folder.

The note contained one sentence.

Ask your sister what happened to the document Elena signed at 6:15 a.m.

I looked at Camille.

Her face drained of color.

“Camille?””

She stared at the photograph, then slowly sat down.

For the first time since this nightmare began, my sister looked genuinely terrified.

“I thought it had been destroyed,” she whispered.

My heart pounded.

“What had been destroyed?””

May you like

Camille raised her eyes to mine.

“The document that could prove who really tried to take Maya's inheritance.””
