Chapter 7: The Hospital Night Nobody Would Explain
My father read the six words again.
Ask Thomas Reed about the hospital night.
The courthouse steps were crowded with people leaving their hearings, but Dad seemed oblivious to them. He stood with my mother's letter in his hand, staring at the handwriting as though the paper had opened a door to a room he'd spent three years trying to forget.
Aunt Rachel looked terrified.
Denise looked triumphant.
"Well?"" my stepmother demanded.
"Are you going to pretend you don't understand what that means?""
Dad lifted his eyes.
"What happened at the hospital?""
Denise's smile widened.
"Ask Thomas.""
"You're standing right here. Tell me.""
"I've told you everything I'm going to tell you.""
She turned to leave.
Dad caught her with one question.
"Why did Evelyn write your name on that letter?""
Denise stopped.
For the first time since I'd known her, she seemed unable to decide whether to speak or remain silent.
Then she leaned toward him.
"Because she knew I was the only person willing to tell you the truth.""
She walked away before he could respond.
I watched her disappear into the crowd.
"Dad?"" I whispered.
He folded the letter carefully.
"We're going to find Thomas Reed.""
Rachel shook her head.
"Marcus, I don't think we should rush into this. That letter could be incomplete, or someone could have altered it.""
"Then we'll verify it.""
"But if Thomas knows something about Evelyn's final night—"
"Rachel, my daughter has been threatened with removal from her home, my wife's trust may have been tampered with, and Denise is using a letter from my dead wife to justify it. I'm done waiting for answers.""
He took my hand.
"Let's go home first.""
On the drive back to Atlanta, I sat in the passenger seat while Rachel followed behind us. The courthouse buildings gave way to storefronts, then neighborhoods lined with tall trees and brick houses.
Dad kept both hands on the steering wheel.
Finally, I asked the question that had been pressing against my chest.
"Did Mom do something bad?""
His head turned slightly.
"No, sweetheart.""
"But Denise said—"
"I don't know what that letter means yet. Neither do you. We're not going to let Denise decide what your mother was or wasn't.""
I looked out the window.
"I don't remember much about the hospital night.""
Dad's grip tightened.
"You were there.""
"I know. But I remember being told to wait in the hallway. Then I remember you coming out crying.""
He swallowed.
"Your mother had asked me to speak to her doctor privately. She was in a lot of pain. I thought she wanted to discuss her treatment.""
"What happened?""
"I never asked Thomas about it because he wasn't there that night. At least, I didn't think he was.""
That made me turn.
"Why would Mom mention him, then?""
Dad had no answer.
When we arrived home, Daniel was waiting in the living room. He'd already begun organizing the documents from the hearing.
Dad placed the letter on the table.
"Can you authenticate this?""
Daniel studied the handwriting and the paper.
"I can arrange for a document examiner to compare it with verified samples. But I can't tell you whether the contents are true just by looking at it.""
"Then find Thomas.""
Daniel picked up his phone.
"I'll start with the contact information in Evelyn's estate records.""
Rachel sat beside me.
"Your mother trusted Thomas more than almost anyone outside the family," she said.
"He was her closest friend long before she met Marcus.""
"Why did he stop visiting us?""
"After Evelyn died, he said he needed time away from everything that reminded him of her.""
"Did Denise tell you anything about him?""
Rachel hesitated.
"She said he had betrayed your mother.""
Dad turned sharply.
"When?""
"About a month after the funeral. Denise told me Thomas had made a promise to Evelyn and broken it. She wouldn't explain what the promise was.""
Dad stared at her.
"And you never told me?""
"I thought it was a private disagreement. I didn't want to cause more pain when you were already grieving.""
He exhaled slowly.
It was becoming clear that Denise had used our grief like a curtain, hiding whatever she wanted behind it.
That evening, Daniel called back.
He'd found an address for Thomas in Savannah, where he had moved nearly two years earlier.
There was also a phone number.
Dad called immediately.
The first attempt went to voicemail.
The second was disconnected.
On the third attempt, someone answered.
"Hello?""
Dad stood up.
"Thomas? It's Marcus Williams.""
Silence.
Then a tired voice replied, "Marcus.""
"Where have you been?""
"I could ask you the same thing.""
"You disappeared after Evelyn's funeral.""
"I was asked to stay away.""
Dad's face hardened.
"By whom?""
Thomas didn't answer.
Dad paced toward the window.
"Did you know Denise filed a petition to take control of Maya's guardianship and interfere with Evelyn's trust?""
A sharp breath came through the phone.
"She did what?""
"Thomas, I need you to tell me what happened at the hospital the night Evelyn died.""
Another silence followed.
When Thomas finally spoke, his voice was barely audible.
"Did Denise show you a letter?""
"Yes.""
"Then she's desperate.""
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn left something out of that letter.""
Dad stopped pacing.
"What did she leave out?""
Thomas exhaled shakily.
"Marcus, I should have told you this three years ago. I wanted to, but Evelyn made me promise to wait until Maya was safe.""
Dad glanced at me.
"She's sitting right here. She's safe.""
"Then you need to know what happened.""
Thomas began to speak, but suddenly his voice changed.
"Wait. Someone's at my door.""
We heard a muffled sound, followed by footsteps.
"Thomas?"" Dad asked.
There was a brief struggle, a sharp crash, and then a woman's voice in the background.
I recognized it instantly.
Denise.
"Give me the phone, Thomas.""
Dad went rigid.
"Denise? What are you doing there?""
Thomas shouted something we couldn't understand.
Then the call went dead.
Dad immediately called back.
No answer.
He tried again.
Voicemail.
Daniel took the phone from him.
"We need to contact the local authorities and request a welfare check.""
Rachel stood.
"She went to Savannah?""
"Apparently," Dad replied.
I stared at the silent phone.
Denise had left our house the previous morning. She had attended the hearing, lost her emergency petition, and watched her financial plans come under scrutiny.
Yet somehow, she'd reached Thomas before we could get the truth from him.
I remembered her words outside the courthouse.
Your wife wasn't the woman you thought she was.
For the first time, I wondered whether Denise was hiding something about my mother that had nothing to do with money.
Something that had happened before I understood what adults were capable of doing.
My father looked at me.
"Maya, we're going to find out what happened. I promise.""
I wanted to believe him.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened for several seconds, and slowly lowered it.
"What is it?"" Dad asked.
Daniel looked at all three of us.
"The police have reached Thomas's address.""
My heart pounded.
"Is he okay?""
Daniel swallowed.
"They found him unconscious in his apartment.""
Rachel covered her mouth.
Dad grabbed his jacket.
"And Denise?""
Daniel looked down at his phone.
"She's gone.""
May you like
Then he added the words that changed everything.
"Thomas's apartment has been searched, and the original copy of Evelyn's trust amendment is missing.""
