Chapter 7: The Woman Who Looked Like Me

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

It wasn’t possible.

That was the only thought my mind could form.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Just impossibility.

The woman in the photograph looked like me.

Not similar.

Not vaguely familiar.

Like me.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same small scar above the left eyebrow.

A scar I got when I was seven years old after falling from my father’s bicycle.

A scar nobody would know unless they had known me for years.

I looked at Sophia.

“Who is she?””

Sophia didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because people who don’t know the truth usually answer quickly.

People who do know the truth choose their words carefully.

“Her name was Eleanor.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Eleanor who?””

Sophia looked at the photograph.

“Eleanor Bennett.””

The room became silent.

I slowly placed the picture on the table.

“No.””

Sophia looked at me.

“I understand why you’re saying that.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“My name is Margaret Bennett.””

Sophia nodded.

“Yes.””

“My parents were Robert and Helen Bennett.””

“Yes.””

“I grew up in Ohio.””

“Yes.””

“Then explain why there is another woman with my face and my family name standing beside my husband before I ever met him.””

Sophia took a breath.

“Because Daniel knew something about your family that you never did.””

I felt anger rise.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone knew something.””

My voice cracked slightly.

“Daniel knew. Adrian knew. Apparently, you knew.””

I looked directly at Sophia.

“And I was the only person left outside the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue with that.

Sophia lowered her eyes.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

“I should have come to you years ago.””

“Why didn’t you?””

“Because Daniel asked me not to.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another secret Daniel carried alone.

Another decision he made for me without me.

“What did he know?””

Sophia opened the folder.

Inside were several old documents.

Birth records.

Letters.

Newspaper articles.

Things that belonged to a life I didn’t recognize.

She pushed the documents toward me.

“Your father’s name was not Robert Bennett.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Not originally.””

My hands went cold.

Sophia continued.

“Your mother changed your family name when you were young.””

“Why?””

“Because she was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Sophia looked at Adrian.

Then at Michael.

Then back at me.

“From the Bennett family.””

I laughed once.

A short, empty sound.

“My family?””

Sophia nodded.

“Daniel discovered the truth when he was investigating the ownership structure of Meridian Aviation.””

I stared at the documents.

“Why would my family have anything to do with this company?””

“Because Meridian Aviation was never just Daniel’s company.””

My eyes lifted.

“What?””

Sophia pointed at the original agreement.

“Before Daniel ever founded Meridian Aviation, the first investment came from a private family trust.””

I looked at the papers.

“Whose trust?””

Sophia answered quietly.

“Yours.””

The room stopped.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I don’t understand.””

“You weren’t supposed to.””

I stood.

“I think I’ve heard enough of people telling me what I was supposed to know.””

My voice echoed through the room.

“My entire life, I believed I built my own path.””

I looked at the documents.

“And now you’re telling me my past was hidden from me?””

Sophia’s expression softened.

“Margaret, listen to me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I want answers.””

She nodded.

“You deserve them.””

Sophia sat down.

“Your grandfather, William Bennett, was one of the original investors in aviation technology companies decades ago.””

I listened despite myself.

“He believed commercial aviation would become one of the most important industries in the world.””

Michael looked through the papers.

“So the Bennett family had aviation investments?””

“Yes.””

Sophia continued.

“But William’s business partners betrayed him.””

A familiar word.

Betrayal.

It followed every corner of this story.

“They manipulated contracts. They transferred assets. They removed him from companies he helped create.””

“And he did nothing?””

“He fought.””

Sophia’s eyes lowered.

“But he lost.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“And Eleanor?””

Sophia hesitated.

“Eleanor was your older sister.””

The words hit like a physical blow.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

“She died when she was nineteen.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You were very young.””

“No.””

My voice became louder.

“My parents told me I was an only child.””

“They did.””

“Then why?””

Sophia looked heartbroken.

“Because they were trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Sophia opened another document.

“After Eleanor died, your family discovered that the people who betrayed William were still trying to gain control of the remaining assets.””

I stared.

“And they thought hiding me would help?””

“Yes.””

“By pretending I had no sister?””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

The pain was not from discovering a sister.

It was from realizing my entire history had missing pages.

“You knew Eleanor?””

Sophia nodded.

“She was my closest friend.””

I looked at her.

“Why do you look so much like me?””

A sad smile appeared.

“Because Eleanor and I were sisters.””

I froze.

“What?””

Sophia looked at the photograph.

“Eleanor was my biological sister.””

The room went silent.

My mind struggled to follow.

“So Daniel’s sister…”

“Yes.””

“Was also…”

“Your sister.””

I sat down slowly.

The pieces were moving too fast.

Sophia took my hand.

A gesture so familiar it frightened me.

“I know this is overwhelming.””

“Why didn’t Daniel tell me?””

“Because he found out something worse.””

“What?””

Sophia looked toward the door.

“Eleanor’s death was not an accident.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

“She died because she found evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Sophia looked at the ownership document.

“Of the same people trying to steal Meridian Aviation now.””

The room became cold.

The past.

The present.

Everything connected.

Daniel wasn’t just protecting a company.

He was protecting a history.

A history someone had spent decades trying to erase.

Michael looked at the agreement.

“Mrs. Bennett…”

I looked at him.

“There’s something else.””

He turned the document around.

“There is a clause here.””

I read the section.

My eyes moved across the legal language.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Michael looked serious.

“This explains why someone wanted control of the aviation division.””

I read the sentence again.

The ownership agreement contained a condition.

A condition Daniel had discovered.

A condition that changed everything.

“If the original Bennett heir returns…”

I looked up.

“What?””

Michael continued.

“…all unauthorized transfers become immediately invalid.””

The room went silent.

Sophia nodded.

“Daniel discovered that.””

“And that means?””

“It means the people who created Bennett Strategic Holdings had one goal.””

“What goal?””

“To make sure you never found out who you really were.””

I stared at the agreement.

The company.

The documents.

The stolen identity.

The fake signatures.

It wasn’t just about money.

It was about removing me.

Because as long as I didn’t know the truth…

they could control everything.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened it.

This time, there was no warning.

No threat.

Just a single photograph.

My hands began shaking.

Because the picture showed Daniel.

The night before his death.

Standing outside his office.

Talking to someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had looked me in the eyes for three years and lied.

Below the photograph was one sentence:

*Daniel did not die because he knew too much. He died because he told her.*

I looked at the image again.

Then slowly raised my eyes.

May you like

Because the person standing with Daniel that night…

was me.
