Chapter 6: The Person My Mother Erased
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The room felt too small.
Too quiet.
I looked between Diane and Renata.
Neither of them wanted to say the name.
That scared me more than anything.
"Who is it?""
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
Renata sat down.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had been carrying this secret for years.
"Her name is Evelyn.""
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing to me.
"Who is Evelyn?""
Renata looked at Diane.
Then back at me.
"Your mother's sister.""
I froze.
"My aunt?""
Renata nodded.
"You have an aunt you've never met.""
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
"My mother has a sister?""
"Yes.""
"Why don't I know about her?""
No one answered.
That was the answer.
I stood up.
"Someone needs to explain this.""
Diane sighed.
"Your mother cut Evelyn out of her life twenty-five years ago.""
"Why?""
"Because Evelyn knew the truth.""
I looked at the papers again.
"What truth?""
Diane leaned forward.
"Your mother has always needed control.""
I nodded slowly.
"I know that.""
"No, Marcus.""
Diane's expression was serious.
"You know what she does when she feels challenged. You don't know what she does when she feels exposed.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What did she do?""
Diane looked at Renata.
"Tell him.""
Renata shook her head.
"I don't want to be the one.""
"Why?""
"Because he just started believing me.""
The words hurt.
Because they revealed how much damage had already been done.
I reached for her hand.
"Tell me.""
She looked at me.
Then whispered:
"Evelyn contacted me before our wedding.""
My eyes widened.
"What?""
"She found me online.""
"Why?""
"To warn me.""
I stood still.
"What did she say?""
Renata looked down.
"She said your mother destroys people who threaten her image.""
My heart pounded.
"And you believed her?""
"No.""
Renata shook her head.
"Not at first.""
"Then?""
"Then your mother proved it.""
I remembered the first months after our wedding.
My mother visiting constantly.
Making comments.
Giving advice nobody asked for.
Always smiling.
Always watching.
"What did Evelyn tell you?""
Renata hesitated.
"She said your mother didn't just push people away.""
"She said your mother erased them.""
I looked at Diane.
"What does that mean?""
Diane opened the folder again.
Inside were old photographs.
One showed my mother.
A younger version.
Standing beside a woman who looked almost identical.
Evelyn.
Another showed family gatherings.
Everyone smiling.
Except my mother.
"Your mother wanted everyone to believe Evelyn was unstable," Diane said.
"She told people Evelyn had problems.""
I stared at the pictures.
"Did she?""
"No.""
"How do you know?""
"Because Evelyn was the person who helped your father discover the truth.""
The room went silent.
"My father.""
Diane nodded.
"Your father didn't leave because he stopped loving you.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Then why?""
"Because your mother gave him a choice.""
"What choice?""
Diane looked at me.
"Stay quiet or lose everything.""
I couldn't breathe.
The man I remembered leaving.
The man I had spent years resenting.
Maybe he wasn't the person I thought he was.
That night, I searched for Evelyn.
Not online.
Not through social media.
Through old family records.
And I found something.
An address.
A phone number.
A woman living two hours away.
Someone my mother had spent decades pretending didn't exist.
Before I could call, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice responded.
"Marcus?""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
A pause.
Then:
"My name is Evelyn.""
I stood up.
The timing was impossible.
"How did you get my number?""
"Your wife gave it to me.""
I looked at Renata.
She looked confused.
"I need to ask you something.""
"What?""
Her voice became quiet.
"Did your mother tell you that your father abandoned you?""
My throat tightened.
"Yes.""
A long silence followed.
Then Evelyn said:
"She lied.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why?""
Because the answer mattered.
It mattered more than anything.
Evelyn whispered:
"Because your father found out what she did.""
"What did she do?""
I heard her take a breath.
Then:
"Marcus, your mother didn't just manipulate your family.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What are you saying?""
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"She changed the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The ones that decided who got custody of you.""
I couldn't move.
The room disappeared.
There was only her voice.
"Your father didn't leave you.""
A pause.
"He was forced out.""
My heart stopped.
Because suddenly the story of my childhood wasn't the story I remembered.
And the person who had told me that story my entire life...
Was the same person who had just been caught hurting my wife.
Evelyn whispered one final sentence.
May you like
"Marcus, you need to know the truth about the day your father disappeared.""
Then the call dropped.
