Chapter 8: The Brother Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Dr. Julian Vale survived.

The paramedics reached him in time, and by noon he was in a private hospital room under observation. His condition was serious, but the attending physician believed he would recover.

Theron did not leave the hospital until Marcus arrived with an emergency preservation order for the documents Vale had supplied.

The papers were secured.

The recording was copied.

The investigator documented Edmund's arrival at the cemetery and recorded the statements of two witnesses who had seen the confrontation.

But none of that explained the sentence the doctor had whispered before collapsing.

She had a child before you.

Theron sat in the hospital corridor, staring at the rain sliding down the windows.

Seraphina arrived carrying two coffees and a paper bag of sandwiches.

She placed one coffee beside him.

"How is he?""

"Stable. He hasn't regained consciousness.""

"And Father?""

"Gone.""

Seraphina sat down.

"Did he say anything else?""

Theron shook his head.

"Just that Mother had another child.""

Seraphina went still.

"That's impossible.""

"Apparently, it isn't.""

"Our mother had one pregnancy before you?""

"Not according to anything we've ever been told.""

Seraphina stared at the floor.

"Could he have meant a miscarriage?""

"He said she had a child.""

"Maybe he was confused.""

"Maybe.""

But Theron did not believe that.

The terror in Vale's eyes had been unmistakable. He had not been describing an old medical detail. He had been revealing something that frightened him more than the possibility of being arrested.

Theron opened his phone and searched for the hospital records from Eleanor's final admission. He had never requested them before. His father had handled the funeral arrangements, the medical paperwork, and the estate administration.

Now Theron understood how easily a person could be made ignorant of his own history.

Marcus arrived half an hour later.

"I've spoken to the hospital," he said.

"Dr. Vale's records will be preserved. We have also contacted the relevant authorities about the suspected poisoning and the irregular financial transfers.""

"What about the death certificate?""

Marcus opened his briefcase.

"The original certificate lists cardiac failure following a sudden medical deterioration. There is no mention of a suspected toxic exposure.""

"Which is exactly what Vale said he concealed.""

"Yes. But we need the original medical records, the toxicology results, and testimony from the people involved before drawing a final conclusion.""

Theron leaned forward.

"Can we get the original records?""

"We're making the request.""

"And what about the child?""

Marcus glanced at Seraphina.

"What child?""

Theron repeated Vale's words.

Marcus listened without interrupting.

When Theron finished, the lawyer closed his briefcase.

"That's a separate question, and we need to approach it carefully. There may be records, adoption documents, or evidence of a previous pregnancy. But until we establish the child's identity, we should avoid assumptions.""

Theron looked toward the hospital room.

"Vale said my father never told me.""

"That doesn't prove your father knows where the child is now.""

"No. But it gives us somewhere to start.""

Marcus nodded.

"I'll have the investigator search public records and historical documents. We should also speak to the family solicitor who handled Eleanor's estate.""

Seraphina stood.

"I'll search Mother's papers.""

"Carefully," Marcus reminded her.

"Don't discard anything, and don't alter the documents.""

"I know.""

She turned to Theron.

"I'm going home to collect the rest of the box. There were letters I didn't examine.""

Theron nodded.

Before she left, she placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Whatever we discover, you are still you.""

He looked at her.

"What if everything I believe about my life is a lie?""

"Then we'll find out which parts are true.""

She squeezed his shoulder.

"And you don't have to solve all of it today.""

For once, Theron listened.

He returned to the mansion that evening and found Eirlys waiting in the drawing room.

She had built a small tower from wooden blocks and was trying to balance a stuffed rabbit on top.

When he entered, she looked up.

"Daddy!""

He knelt, and she ran to him.

"Did you see Grandpa?""

"Yes.""

"Was he nice?""

Theron thought of the smile Edmund had worn at the cemetery.

"Not very.""

Eirlys frowned.

"Did you tell him to be nice?""

"I did.""

"Did he listen?""

Theron let out a quiet breath.

"No.""

She considered this with the grave seriousness of a child who had recently learned that adults could refuse to behave.

"Then he needs a time-out.""

Theron laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh he had managed all day.

"You're probably right.""

Eirlys climbed into his lap.

"Can we have tea?""

"Of course.""

She led him to the low table where her toys were arranged. Three plastic cups stood beside the yellow teapot.

One cup was pink.

One was blue.

The third was white.

"Who gets the white one?"" he asked.

"Grandma.""

Theron looked at the empty chair.

"You're saving it for her?""

Eirlys nodded.

"Because she can't come.""

His throat tightened.

He poured imaginary tea into the white cup.

"Then we should make it a good one.""

Eirlys smiled.

For twenty minutes, he let himself be a father instead of an investigator, a son, or a man whose family had become a maze of lies.

Then Mabel entered carrying a small package.

"Mr. Viremont, this was delivered to the front desk. It was addressed to you personally.""

Theron took it.

There was no return address.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Eleanor standing outside a hospital, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

She looked younger than Theron remembered, but unmistakably happy.

On the back, someone had written:

*October 14. One week before Edmund told the family the baby had died.*

Theron stared at the date.

The photograph was twenty-seven years old.

He was born the following year.

Beneath it lay a second piece of paper containing a name.

*Adrian Vale.*

Theron read it aloud.

"Adrian.""

Mabel, who had been watching from the doorway, suddenly covered her mouth.

Theron looked at her.

"What is it?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing, sir.""

"Mabel.""

The housekeeper looked toward Eirlys, then back at him.

"I knew your mother had been pregnant before you were born. But Mr. Edmund said the baby didn't survive.""

Theron's pulse quickened.

"You knew?""

"Not the details. I was working in the household at the time, but I was young. Mrs. Eleanor was taken to a hospital in the city, and when she returned, she was devastated.""

"Did she say the baby was dead?""

"No, sir.""

Mabel's voice dropped.

"She said someone had taken him.""

Theron felt the words land like a blow.

"Who?""

"I don't know. I only heard her speaking to your father in the library. She begged him to tell her where the baby was. He said she needed to accept what had happened.""

Theron gripped the photograph.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"I thought it was a private tragedy. Then Mr. Edmund told the staff that discussing it would only upset Mrs. Eleanor.""

Theron stared at the photograph again.

His mother had been holding a living baby.

She had been smiling.

And someone had told her that child was dead.

Eirlys tugged at his sleeve.

"Daddy?""

He looked down.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"You're squeezing the picture.""

He immediately loosened his grip.

"I'm sorry.""

She studied his face.

"Is it a sad picture?""

"Yes.""

"Do you want a hug?""

Theron felt something break inside him.

"Very much.""

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

He held her until she pulled away.

Then he called Marcus.

Within an hour, the lawyer and Daniel Cross were back at the mansion. They examined the photograph, the note, and the delivery packaging.

The handwriting on the back of the photograph was not immediately identifiable.

The date, however, matched a period when Eleanor's medical records showed an unexplained hospital admission.

Marcus made a list.

"We need the hospital's archived maternity records, the original birth registration, and any documents relating to the baby's reported death. We'll also need to verify whether Adrian Vale is a real person connected to Dr. Julian Vale.""

Theron looked at the name.

"Why Adrian Vale?""

"Possibly the doctor's son. We don't know yet.""

"Find out.""

Daniel Cross began searching public records.

The first result appeared before midnight.

Adrian Vale had been born in October, twenty-seven years earlier, at the same hospital where Eleanor had been treated.

The birth record showed a mother whose name had been withheld from the public index.

The father's name was blank.

But the registration had been amended two months later.

The child had been placed with a family in another county.

Theron read the entry.

"Someone changed the record.""

Marcus leaned over his shoulder.

"It appears so.""

"Can we find the family?""

"Possibly.""

Daniel searched again.

A name appeared.

*Nathaniel and Grace Mercer.*

The couple had adopted a boy named Adrian, who had grown up in a coastal town several hours away.

He had attended university, become a financial analyst, and eventually founded a small forensic accounting firm.

Theron stared at the screen.

"A financial analyst.""

Marcus nodded.

"Someone who might understand the trust transfers.""

"And someone who might know what happened to his birth mother.""

Daniel opened another page.

Adrian Mercer had recently filed a formal complaint against a financial holding company connected to the Viremont family.

The complaint alleged that the company had concealed transfers from a private trust for more than twenty years.

Theron felt the hairs rise on his arms.

"He knows.""

"Or he suspects," Marcus replied.

The investigator continued scrolling.

A recent photograph appeared.

A man stood outside a courthouse, wearing a dark suit and carrying a leather folder.

He had Eleanor's eyes.

The same gray-blue color.

The same slight downward tilt at the corners.

Theron stared at the photograph until the screen blurred.

Seraphina came into the room.

"What happened?""

He turned the laptop toward her.

She studied the image.

Then she whispered, "Oh, my God.""

Theron could barely speak.

"That's him.""

"Theron, we don't know that.""

"He looks like her.""

"That doesn't prove anything.""

He nodded, forcing himself to slow down.

Marcus was right. A photograph and an amended birth record were not enough to establish the truth.

But they were enough to justify a search.

Daniel clicked on the accounting firm's website.

There was an office address.

A business telephone number.

And a brief biography.

Adrian Mercer specialized in investigating financial misconduct, hidden assets, and fraudulent trust arrangements.

At the bottom of the page was a statement from the firm's founder.

*My work is personal. I believe people deserve to know where their money went, who profited from their suffering, and why the truth was kept from them.*

Theron read the sentence twice.

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

"Theron Viremont?""

The man's voice was calm, measured, and strangely familiar.

"Yes.""

"My name is Adrian Mercer.""

Theron stopped breathing.

"I believe you have a photograph of my mother.""

Silence filled the room.

Then Adrian continued.

"I've been looking for Eleanor Viremont for twenty-seven years.""

Theron gripped the edge of the desk.

"How do you know that name?""

"Because it's the name on the birth record my adoptive parents gave me when I turned eighteen. They told me I was adopted, but they didn't know who my biological parents were.""

He paused.

"Three months ago, I found a sealed envelope among my father's papers. It contained a copy of my original birth registration.""

Theron glanced at Marcus.

"What did it say?""

"It named Eleanor Viremont as my mother.""

Seraphina pressed a hand to her mouth.

Theron could hear his own heartbeat.

"Do you have proof?""

"Not enough. That's why I've been investigating the trust.""

"Why the trust?""

"Because my adoption records were amended shortly after a large payment was made to the agency that handled my placement. The payment came from an account connected to the Viremont family office.""

Theron closed his eyes.

The pieces were beginning to fit.

The missing child.

The altered documents.

The money.

His father's voice on the recording.

"Adrian," he said carefully, "I need to ask you something.""

"Go ahead.""

"Do you know who your father is?""

A pause followed.

"No.""

Theron swallowed.

"Would you be willing to take a DNA test?""

Another silence.

Then Adrian gave a quiet, bitter laugh.

"I've been waiting twenty-seven years for someone in your family to ask me that.""

Theron stared at the photograph on the screen.

"I didn't know you existed.""

"I believe you.""

"How can you be sure?""

"Because if you had known, you would have found me years ago. You have the resources.""

The answer hurt because it was probably true.

Theron lowered his head.

"I am sorry.""

Adrian did not respond immediately.

Then he said, "I don't want an apology from a man who has never met me. I want the truth.""

"So do I.""

"Then we need to meet.""

"Where?""

"Tomorrow. My office.""

Theron agreed.

Before ending the call, Adrian added one final sentence.

"Mr. Viremont, there is something else you should know.""

"What?""

"I have reason to believe your father didn't simply hide my birth. He paid someone to ensure I would never return to the family.""

Theron's stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"I don't know yet.""

Adrian paused.

"But I found a payment made six months ago to a private investigator. The instructions were simple.""

His voice hardened.

*If Adrian Mercer discovers his biological family, make sure he never reaches them.*

The line went dead.

Theron stood motionless.

Then Marcus's computer chimed.

A new email had arrived from Corisande's attorney.

It contained a formal demand for immediate temporary custody of Eirlys, accompanied by a sworn statement alleging that Theron had concealed a dangerous family history.

The statement was signed by Corisande.

At the bottom, she had added a handwritten note.

*You wanted the truth, Theron. Now everyone will learn what your family really is.*

May you like

And beneath her signature was another name.

Edmund Viremont.
