Chapter 8: The Meeting My Mother Planned

My father sat down slowly.

The silence between us felt heavier than shouting.

I had spent years believing my mother's death was the moment our family broke apart.

Now I wondered if the breaking had started long before.

"Dad.""

He looked at me.

"Who sent that?""

"I don't know.""

"Emma, you need to be careful.""

I almost smiled.

"Careful?""

I held up my phone.

"I spent years being careful. Careful not to upset Gwendolyn. Careful not to make Chloe feel jealous. Careful not to make you feel guilty.""

I stepped closer.

"I was so careful that nobody noticed I was disappearing.""

My father closed his eyes.

The words hurt him.

Good.

Some truths were supposed to hurt.

"I need to tell you about that day," he finally said.

I waited.

"The day your mother changed the documents.""

I nodded.

He looked toward the desk.

"Your mother found out about Gwendolyn.""

The room went silent again.

"How?""

"She saw messages.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Between you and her?""

He nodded.

My father sat there, the man who had once been my hero, admitting the thing I had spent years not knowing.

"Mom confronted you?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

He swallowed.

"She asked me if I was already planning a life without her.""

The sadness in his voice almost distracted me.

Almost.

"What did you say?""

He looked down.

"I said I didn't know.""

My heart cracked.

Because that was somehow worse than a lie.

He didn't know.

My mother was dying, and he didn't know if he wanted the woman he built a family with.

"What happened after?""

"She told me she was changing the trust.""

"Because of Gwendolyn?""

"Because of me.""

I froze.

"What?""

My father looked at me.

"Your mother wasn't trying to punish Gwendolyn. She was protecting you from my weakness.""

That sentence stayed with me.

My mother knew him.

She knew exactly who he was.

Not cruel.

Not evil.

Just weak.

And sometimes weakness could destroy people just as badly.

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

Gwendolyn stood at the office door.

I didn't know how long she had been there.

But based on her expression, she had heard enough.

"We need to talk.""

I laughed.

"No.""

She stepped inside.

"Emma.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

And that seemed to bother her more than anger.

"I spent years listening to everyone explain why my feelings were wrong.""

I pointed toward the door.

"I'm done.""

Gwendolyn looked at my father.

"Samuel, are you really letting this happen?""

There it was.

Again.

The expectation that he would choose her.

But this time, he didn't immediately move.

And that hesitation made her angry.

"You promised me.""

The room froze.

I looked at my father.

"What did she mean?""

Gwendolyn's face changed.

"Nothing.""

But it was too late.

My father looked terrified.

"What did you promise her?""

Nobody answered.

I walked toward Gwendolyn.

"What did he promise?""

She looked at me.

"You don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

Her expression hardened.

"You think you're the only person who lost something?""

I stared.

She continued.

"I came into this family after years of being treated like an outsider.""

I almost laughed.

"An outsider?""

"Yes.""

She pointed around.

"This house was filled with memories of a woman who wasn't here anymore. Samuel was trapped in the past. Chloe felt like she didn't belong.""

I shook my head.

"So you decided I didn't belong either?""

Her eyes flashed.

"I decided this family needed to move forward.""

"No.""

I stepped closer.

"You decided your comfort mattered more.""

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Your mother hated me.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She knew about me.""

My father looked shocked.

Gwendolyn continued.

"She blamed me for everything.""

I looked at her.

"Did she?""

The question made her hesitate.

Because deep down, she knew.

My mother wasn't cruel.

She wasn't the type to hate someone without reason.

"What did Mom say to you?""

Gwendolyn looked away.

"She told me I would never have this house.""

My heart stopped.

"Because she knew.""

Gwendolyn's eyes snapped toward me.

"Because she thought she knew everything.""

The way she said it made me realize something.

She wasn't just angry.

She was still fighting a battle against a woman who had been dead for years.

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Evelyn.

*Emma, don't trust anything Gwendolyn says next. She is going to tell you the one thing your father has hidden for years.*

I looked at my father.

Then at Gwendolyn.

"What did you hide?""

My father went pale.

Gwendolyn smiled sadly.

May you like

And for the first time, I saw confidence return to her face.

"Ask him about the night your mother died.""
