Chapter 2: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

My father stared at the phone like it was a ghost.
The screen continued glowing.
My mother’s name.
A name that should have disappeared from his phone years ago.
“Dad?”” I whispered.
He immediately turned the phone face down.
Too quickly.
That was when I knew.
Something was wrong.
“What was that?”” I asked.
“Nothing.””
I laughed quietly.
“Nothing?””
His eyes avoided mine.
“Emma, you should just go tonight. We’ll talk another time.””
“No.””
The word surprised both of us.
For years, I had accepted silence.
I had accepted excuses.
I had accepted being ignored.
Not anymore.
“What is happening?”” I asked.
My father rubbed his face.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Before he could answer, Vanessa shouted from downstairs.
“Daniel? Are you coming?””
My father flinched.
That reaction told me everything.
He was afraid of her.
Not of losing me.
Of her.
He lowered his voice.
“Please. Just trust me.””
I looked at him.
The irony almost hurt.
Trust.
A word he had not earned in years.
“You’re asking me for trust after letting her throw me out?””
His shoulders dropped.
“I made mistakes.””
“Your mistake was choosing her?””
His silence answered.
I picked up my suitcase.
“I’m done waiting for you to become the father you promised Mom you would be.””
I walked past him.
But before I reached the stairs, he grabbed a small envelope from his desk drawer.
“Take this.””
I looked down.
It was old.
Yellowed.
My name was written across the front.
Emma.
My heartbeat changed.
“Where did you get this?””
He swallowed.
“Your mother gave it to me before she died.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“I was supposed to.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
The honesty shocked me.
For the first time in years, my father admitted something without defending himself.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
My mother.
My father.
And a man I had never seen before.
On the back, my mother had written one sentence.
“Daniel knows why he cannot tell Emma the truth.””
I looked up.
“What truth?””
My father stepped back.
“Emma…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like you’re protecting me.””
His eyes closed.
“There are things your mother discovered before she died.””
“What things?””
He didn’t answer.
Because Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.
“What’s going on?””
My father immediately hid the envelope.
That tiny movement destroyed whatever hope I had left.
Even now.
Even after everything.
He was still protecting secrets.
Vanessa looked between us.
“What are you hiding?””
“Nothing,” my father said.
But Vanessa noticed the envelope.
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What is that?”” she asked.
I held it tighter.
“My mother’s.””
Vanessa went pale.
“That should have been destroyed.””
The hallway became completely silent.
My father looked at her.
“Vanessa.””
But it was too late.
I heard every word.
Destroyed.
My mother’s belongings.
My mother’s secrets.
My history.
“What did you just say?”” I asked.
Vanessa recovered quickly.
“I mean old things. Things from before.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You said destroyed.””
Her face hardened.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Maybe she believed that.
Maybe she thought I was still the quiet girl who accepted everything.
But something had changed.
That night, I stopped being afraid of losing them.
Because I finally understood.
I had already lost them.
“I’m leaving,” I said.
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“Good.””
I walked down the stairs.
My father followed.
“Emma, wait.””
I turned around.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
Because for once, he didn’t have an answer.
I opened the front door.
Cold rain air rushed inside.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
The message contained only six words.
“Your father did not abandon you.””
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Another message appeared.
“He was forced to.””
