Chapter 5: Emily’s Last Warning

I couldn’t open the letter.

Not immediately.

I sat there holding it while my entire life rearranged itself.

There are moments when you realize the past you trusted was built on missing pieces.

This was one of those moments.

Michael sat beside me.

“Dad.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Do you want me to leave?””

The question hurt.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“I don’t want secrets between us anymore.””

He looked down.

“Okay.””

I opened the letter.

Emily’s handwriting filled the page.

The first thing I noticed was how normal it looked.

That hurt.

Because the person who wrote those words was gone.

But the handwriting remained.

*Marcus,*

*If you are reading this, something happened that made you question Sarah.*

I stopped.

My breathing changed.

Michael watched me.

I kept reading.

*I hope I’m wrong. I hope I’m being paranoid. More than anything, I hope you never have to read this.*

My eyes burned.

Emily always apologized before she expressed fear.

Even when she had every reason not to.

*Sarah came to see me at the hospital. She told me she cared about you. She told me she could give you and Michael a life after I was gone.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*At first, I thought she was being kind. Then she started saying things that didn’t feel kind.*

I swallowed.

*She told me Michael needed someone stronger than me. She told me children need mothers who can stay.*

Michael looked away.

I felt anger rise.

But I kept reading.

*The worst part wasn’t what she said about me. It was what she said about you.*

My eyes moved faster.

*She told me you were exhausted. She told me you were already grieving me before I was gone.*

I closed my eyes.

Emily had been dying.

And someone had tried to make her feel abandoned.

*Marcus, I don’t want you to hate her. Hate is a heavy thing to carry. But I need you to be careful.*

A tear fell onto the paper.

*Sarah does not love broken things because she wants to heal them. She loves broken things because they are easier to control.*

The room was silent.

Michael whispered:

“She knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knew.””

He touched the box.

“Mom knew.””

I nodded.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because Emily had been trying to protect us from someone she feared.

And we walked straight into that person’s hands.

I continued.

*If Sarah becomes part of your life, watch how she treats Michael when nobody is looking. That is where people reveal themselves.*

I stopped.

Because Emily had been right.

Exactly right.

The dinner plate.

The bedroom.

The silence.

All of it.

*Love is not proven by how someone treats you when they want something. It is proven by how they treat the people who cannot give them anything.*

I lowered the letter.

Michael wiped his eyes.

“I should have told you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“I should have known.””

“You were busy.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I chose not to see it.””

Michael looked at me.

That was the hardest truth.

Not that Sarah lied.

That I believed her because believing her was easier.

I folded the letter carefully.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A woman’s voice.

“Marcus?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not Sarah.

Someone older.

Someone familiar.

“Who is this?””

The woman hesitated.

“It’s Linda.””

My stomach dropped.

Linda.

Sarah’s older sister.

I stood.

“Why are you calling me?””

“Because I heard Sarah left.””

I looked at Michael.

“How?””

“Because she called me.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What did she tell you?””

Silence.

Then Linda said:

“She told me you found Emily’s letter.””

My blood went cold.

“How would Sarah know about the letter?””

Linda didn’t answer.

That answer was enough.

“Linda.””

Her voice shook.

“Marcus, you need to listen to me.””

“I’m listening.””

“Sarah has been lying to you for years.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t know everything.””

“What else?””

She breathed in.

Then said:

“Sarah didn’t just burn the photograph.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

“She didn’t destroy one memory.””

The silence stretched.

“She destroyed evidence.””

My grip loosened.

“Evidence of what?””

Linda whispered:

“The night Emily died.””

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything except those words.

The night Emily died.

“Linda…”

“I’m sorry.””

“What happened that night?””

May you like

Her voice broke.

“Sarah was there.””
