Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Chose Me

Vittorio stared at the photograph until the edges of the phone blurred.

Two girls.

Lucy.

And the dark-haired child beside her.

Both wearing the same red ribbon.

Both looking directly at the camera.

Bianca stood beside him, trembling.

“That's her,” she whispered.

Vittorio looked at her.

“Elena?””

Bianca shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Bianca swallowed.

“The girl your father took.””

Vittorio's eyes narrowed.

“My father's?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

“You've had twelve years.””

“I know.””

He turned toward Daniel.

“Get the cars ready.””

Daniel nodded.

“How many men?””

“All of them.””

“Police?””

“No.””

Daniel hesitated.

“Sir, if those girls are being held—”

“I said no police.””

He looked at the photograph again.

“We don't know who we can trust.””

Bianca stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

Vittorio looked at her.

“No.””

“You need me.””

“Why?””

“Because I know where the old warehouse is.””

Vittorio's expression hardened.

“So does Matteo.””

“I know.””

“Then what do you know that he doesn't?””

Bianca reached into her coat.

She pulled out a folded photograph.

Vittorio opened it.

It showed the warehouse twelve years earlier.

But there was something written on the back.

A sequence of numbers.

Vittorio stared.

“What is this?””

“The vault.””

“What vault?””

“Your father built one beneath the warehouse.””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Is it on the blueprints?””

“No,” Bianca said.

“Then how do you know?””

Bianca looked at Vittorio.

“Because I was there when he built it.””

Vittorio said nothing.

They left twenty minutes later.

The drive took less than half an hour.

The old warehouse sat beyond the industrial district, abandoned for years.

Its windows were boarded.

The loading doors were rusted.

Weeds pushed through cracks in the concrete.

Vittorio stepped from the car.

The air smelled of rain and oil.

Daniel's men spread out.

“Nothing moving,” Daniel said.

Vittorio looked at Bianca.

“Where?””

She pointed toward the building.

“Under the loading platform.””

They entered.

Inside, the warehouse was dark.

Every footstep echoed.

Vittorio remembered this place.

The explosion.

The smoke.

Matteo screaming his name.

Then fire.

Then silence.

He stopped.

“I remember.””

Bianca looked at him.

“What?””

“Matteo wasn't screaming for help.””

She frowned.

“He was shouting a name.””

“Whose?””

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“Sofia.””

Bianca's face changed.

“Sofia was already dead.””

“I know.””

They reached the loading platform.

Bianca moved several crates.

Behind them was a steel panel.

She entered the numbers from the photograph.

Nothing happened.

She tried again.

Still nothing.

Vittorio examined the keypad.

Then noticed four scratches beside it.

Three short.

One long.

He remembered.

As children, he and Matteo had used that pattern to knock on each other's bedroom doors.

He pressed the buttons corresponding to the pattern.

The panel opened.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Daniel lifted his flashlight.

“Stay behind me.””

They went down.

At the bottom stood a steel door.

No lock.

It opened by itself.

Inside was a control room.

Monitors lined the walls.

Most showed static.

One showed Lucy.

She was sitting on a chair.

Her hands were free.

She looked frightened.

Vittorio stepped toward the screen.

“Lucy.””

Her head lifted.

“Daddy!””

He almost broke the monitor.

“Where are you?””

Lucy looked around.

“I don't know.””

“Is anyone with you?””

She shook her head.

Then another voice answered.

“She isn't alone.””

Vittorio turned.

A speaker crackled.

Marcus.

“You made it.””

Vittorio looked at the cameras.

“Bring her out.””

“Not yet.””

“Where is the other girl?””

Marcus laughed.

“Still asking the wrong question.””

Vittorio's voice became ice.

“I have the key.””

The laughter stopped.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

“Then put it into the console.””

Vittorio looked at the control panel.

A small slot sat beneath the main screen.

He inserted the key.

The monitors flickered.

Every screen changed.

Photographs appeared.

His father.

Matteo.

Bianca.

Marcus.

And dozens of other people.

Then one photograph appeared larger than the rest.

Two infants.

The same two girls.

But beneath the photograph were names.

*ELENA ROMANO — DECEASED.*

*LUCIA VALE — MISSING.*

Vittorio frowned.

“Lucia?””

Bianca covered her mouth.

Marcus spoke through the speaker.

“Now you understand.””

Vittorio turned toward her.

“What is Lucia Vale?””

Bianca's eyes filled with tears.

“My sister.””

Vittorio stared.

“What?””

“I had a daughter before I met you.””

“You told me she died.””

“She didn't.””

“Where is she?””

Bianca pointed at the screen.

“The dark-haired girl.””

Vittorio stared at the twelve-year-old face.

Everything fell into place.

Bianca had not taken Matteo's daughter.

She had taken her own.

Her daughter had been stolen by Antonio.

The baby with golden hair had been someone else's.

Lucy.

A child whose real identity had been deliberately erased.

Vittorio looked at the screen showing Lucy.

“Then who is Lucy?””

Marcus answered.

“The only person who knows.””

The screen changed.

A video appeared.

Five-year-old Lucy sat in a room.

Across from her sat an older man.

Not Matteo.

Not Marcus.

Vittorio recognized him immediately.

His father.

Antonio Romano.

Vittorio's knees nearly gave out.

The footage was dated six years earlier.

A year before Lucy had supposedly been born.

Antonio leaned toward the camera.

“Tell me your name.””

The child answered.

“Lucy.””

“Who is your daddy?””

She smiled.

“Vittorio.””

Antonio smiled.

“Good girl.””

Vittorio stared in horror.

The footage continued.

Antonio asked, “What did your mother tell you?””

The child looked frightened.

“She said I'm supposed to forget.””

“Forget what?””

Lucy lowered her head.

“That I'm not Lucy.””

Vittorio's breath caught.

The recording ended.

He turned toward Bianca.

“You knew.””

She shook her head desperately.

“I knew something was wrong. I didn't know what.””

“You raised her.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to her.””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“From whom?””

Bianca looked at the screen.

“Your father.””

Vittorio's phone rang.

He answered.

Matteo.

“Hello?””

His brother's voice was quiet.

“You finally saw it.””

“Where are you?””

“Close.””

“Come here.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the man you think is Marcus isn't Marcus.””

Vittorio froze.

“What?””

Matteo continued.

“The real Marcus died twelve years ago.””

Vittorio looked at the screen.

The man calling himself Marcus stood somewhere behind the camera.

“Then who is he?””

“A man your father hired to become him.””

Vittorio looked at Bianca.

She whispered, “The replacement.””

Matteo said, “Exactly.””

“Where's the real Marcus?””

“Dead.””

“Who killed him?””

Silence.

Then Matteo answered.

“Bianca.””

Vittorio turned.

Bianca's face crumpled.

“No.””

“You don't remember?””

“I remember.””

“You killed him to save Lucia.””

Vittorio stared at his wife.

She sank to the floor.

“I had no choice.””

Matteo's voice softened.

“You always had a choice.””

Bianca began sobbing.

Vittorio looked at the screen showing Lucy.

“Where is my daughter?””

Matteo answered.

“She isn't your biological daughter.””

Vittorio closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“But she is your daughter.””

He opened them.

“What do you mean?””

“Because you were the only one who chose her.””

The lights suddenly went out.

A gunshot echoed through the control room.

Daniel shouted.

“DOWN!””

Vittorio grabbed Bianca and pulled her behind the console.

Another shot.

Glass exploded.

Then silence.

A door opened.

A man stepped into the room.

Older.

Scarred.

Gray-haired.

Vittorio stared.

He knew that face.

He had seen it in photographs.

He had seen it in nightmares.

“Matteo.””

His brother lowered the gun.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

Vittorio couldn't move.

Matteo walked toward him.

They stood three feet apart.

Twelve years disappeared.

“You're alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I had to.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You watched me raise Lucy.””

“I watched you love her.””

Vittorio's eyes filled.

“Was any of it real?””

Matteo looked toward the monitor.

“Yes.””

A tiny voice came through the speaker.

“Daddy?””

Vittorio turned.

Lucy.

The screen showed her crying.

“Daddy, please come get me.””

Vittorio moved toward the door.

Matteo grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

“I’m going to get her.””

“You can't go through that door.””

“Why?””

“Because the warehouse is wired to explode.””

Vittorio stopped.

Matteo pointed toward the monitors.

“Your father built this place to erase evidence.””

“How much time?””

“Four minutes.””

Daniel checked his watch.

“Sir.””

Vittorio looked at the screens.

“Where are the girls?””

Matteo pointed.

“Two rooms below us.””

“Then let's move.””

They ran.

A hidden stairwell opened beneath the control room.

They descended.

At the bottom was a reinforced chamber.

Two doors.

Two locks.

Two girls.

Lucy was behind one.

The dark-haired girl behind the other.

Vittorio ran to Lucy.

“Daddy!””

He pulled her into his arms.

She buried her face against him.

“I knew you'd come.””

“I always will.””

Behind him, Matteo opened the second door.

The dark-haired girl stepped out.

She looked at Bianca.

“Mom?””

Bianca collapsed.

“My baby.””

Lucia ran into her arms.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the alarm began screaming.

Daniel shouted, “We have ninety seconds!””

Vittorio grabbed Lucy.

Matteo took Lucia.

They ran.

Behind them, lights flashed red.

The warehouse shook.

They reached the loading platform.

A deafening explosion erupted behind them.

Vittorio fell.

Lucy screamed.

Matteo grabbed his brother's coat and pulled him upright.

“Run!””

They burst through the doors.

The warehouse exploded behind them.

Fire rose into the night.

Vittorio dropped to his knees in the rain, holding Lucy.

She touched his face.

“Daddy?””

He looked at her.

“Yes?””

“Am I still your daughter?””

Vittorio pulled her against his chest.

“You were my daughter the first time you called me Daddy.””

She smiled through her tears.

“Good.””

Behind them, Bianca held Lucia.

Matteo stood alone.

Vittorio looked at his brother.

“So what happens now?””

Matteo looked toward the burning warehouse.

“Now we tell the truth.””

Vittorio glanced at Bianca.

Then at the two girls.

Then at the flames.

For twelve years, he had believed family was something written on certificates.

Bloodlines.

Names.

Signatures.

Inheritance.

He finally understood.

Family was the person who stayed when the truth became ugly.

The person who came running when you called.

The person who held your hand when the whole world told you to let go.

Vittorio kissed Lucy's forehead.

“You know what?””

“What?””

“I think you owe me a breakfast.””

Lucy giggled.

“Can I have pancakes?””

Vittorio smiled.

“As many as you want.””

Matteo laughed quietly.

Bianca cried.

And for the first time in twelve years, the Romano family stood together beneath the morning sky.

May you like

Not because their secrets had disappeared.

But because they finally had nothing left to hide.
