Chapter 7: The Secret Danielle Took to Her Grave
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Tasha stood beside the bedroom door, her hands trembling.
Vanessa looked at her as though she were seeing a complete stranger.
And I stood in the middle of the room, still holding my phone.
“What did you do before Danielle died?”” I asked.
Tasha shook her head.
“Marcus, you don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
“I was trying to help her.””
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
“By forging documents to steal money from her children's trust?””
“I didn't steal anything!””
“Then why did the solicitor say your name?””
Tasha turned toward me.
“Marcus, please. You have to believe me.””
I looked at her.
“I've spent three years believing you.””
She began crying.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I was desperate.””
“For money?””
She nodded.
I felt sick.
“How much?””
“I don't remember.””
“How much, Tasha?””
She covered her face.
“Forty thousand dollars.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Forty thousand?””
Tasha quickly added, “I never got it. The transfer was blocked.””
I stared at her.
“You tried to take forty thousand dollars from two children?””
“It was going to be temporary!””
“That's not an answer.””
“I had debts. People were calling me. I was going to lose everything.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Can you believe this?””
My sister shook her head.
Then Tasha said something unexpected.
“Danielle knew about the debts.””
I turned.
“What?””
“She knew I was having financial problems. That's why she gave me the envelope.””
“What was inside?””
“A letter.””
“What's in it?””
Tasha looked at the floor.
“I don't remember everything.””
“You just told me you threw it away.””
“I did!””
“Then how do you know what was inside?””
She began crying harder.
“Because I read it!””
I stepped closer.
“What did Danielle write?””
Tasha wiped her cheeks.
“She said she knew I'd tried to access the trust. She said she'd already contacted the solicitor. She told me to stop before I destroyed my life.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I knew you'd leave me.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“So you married me knowing that you had tried to steal my children's inheritance?””
“I loved you!””
“You loved the money!””
“No!””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Marcus, don't let her turn this into an argument about your marriage. We need to find out exactly what happened.””
She took out her phone and called the solicitor.
He answered almost immediately.
“Ms. Reed?””
“This is Vanessa. I'm with Marcus. We need to know what the emergency guardianship arrangement means.””
“Of course. Your sister-in-law's statement raises serious concerns.””
“What happens now?””
“The trust documents are being reviewed. However, I need to inform you that Danielle also left a separate statement concerning the children's welfare.””
I looked at the phone.
“What statement?””
“A sealed affidavit.””
“When can we see it?””
“Tomorrow morning. There are formal procedures we must follow.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Does it mention Tasha?””
The solicitor paused.
“Yes.””
Tasha immediately looked up.
“Don't read it.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“Please, Marcus. Don't read it.””
“Why?””
“Because Danielle didn't understand everything.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Then why are you so afraid of what she wrote?””
Tasha didn't answer.
The following morning, I took the children to my parents' house.
My mother welcomed them with breakfast, fresh fruit, and the kind of warmth I hadn't realized they had been missing.
Imani sat beside her grandmother.
“Grandma, can I have another pancake?””
My mother smiled.
“Darling, you don't need permission to eat breakfast.””
Imani looked at me.
I smiled.
“Enjoy yourself, princess.””
Caleb immediately raised his hand.
“Can I have another one too?””
My father laughed.
“Looks like I'm making another batch.””
For a moment, the house felt peaceful.
Then my mother approached me.
“Marcus, I need to tell you something.””
I followed her into the kitchen.
She closed the door.
“Danielle came to see me a few weeks before she died.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“She asked me not to.””
“What did she say?””
My mother looked toward the children.
“She was worried about someone.””
“Tasha?””
She nodded slowly.
“She said Tasha had been asking strange questions about the children's inheritance.””
I gripped the kitchen counter.
“What questions?””
“She wanted to know how much money Danielle had saved for them. She also asked whether you had access to the account.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Danielle said she had it under control. She didn't want you worrying.””
My mother touched my arm.
“She also asked me to promise something.””
“What?””
“That if anything happened to her, I would never let anyone make those children feel unwanted.””
My throat tightened.
I looked toward the dining room.
Imani was laughing at something my father had said.
Caleb was trying to stack pancakes into a tower.
I had almost missed what was happening right in front of me.
“Mom, I think I've failed them.””
She shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. You trusted the wrong person. What matters now is what you do next.””
At eleven that morning, Vanessa and I arrived at Daniel Foster's law office.
He greeted us and led us into a private meeting room.
A thick folder lay on the table.
“I've reviewed the original documents,” he said.
“What's the truth?”” I asked.
He opened the folder.
“Danielle established a trust worth approximately two hundred and eighty thousand dollars. It was intended to cover the children's education, healthcare, and future expenses.””
I stared at him.
“Two hundred and eighty thousand?””
“Yes. There were also separate life insurance benefits.””
“Why didn't I know about this?””
“Your wife arranged everything independently. She wanted the children's future protected regardless of what happened to her.””
He turned a page.
“Three years ago, an authorization request was submitted to transfer a substantial portion of the trust funds.””
“By Tasha?””
“The signature was attributed to you, but the handwriting analysis later raised concerns.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Was the transfer completed?””
“No. The financial institution flagged it.””
I exhaled.
“Thank God.””
The solicitor continued.
“However, the affidavit contains something more troubling.””
He opened a sealed envelope.
The handwriting on the front was Danielle's.
To Marcus, if the truth is ever revealed.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
My darling Marcus,
If you are reading this, something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.
There is something you need to know about Tasha.
I did not meet her by accident.
I stopped reading.
Vanessa looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
I continued.
She approached me through a woman named Eleanor. At first, I believed she genuinely wanted to help with a charity project.
Then she began asking questions about our finances, the children's trust, and what would happen if I were no longer here.
I became suspicious when I discovered that she had previously used a different surname.
I looked up.
“What surname?””
Daniel turned another page.
“Danielle identified her as Tasha Miller.””
I stared.
Tasha Reed had once been Tasha Miller.
I continued reading.
Marcus, I don't know whether she truly cares about you. But I know she has been hiding something.
I discovered that she had been involved in a financial dispute with someone who claimed she had stolen money from a previous employer.
I was afraid she might use our family to solve her problems.
My hands began shaking.
The final paragraph was even worse.
If she ever becomes part of your children's lives, please don't allow her to control their inheritance or isolate them from the people who love them.
And Marcus, if you discover that she has been cruel to Imani, believe your daughter.
Children often know when someone doesn't love them properly long before adults are willing to admit it.
I lowered the letter.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then the solicitor placed another document in front of me.
“There's one additional matter.””
“What?””
He pointed to a paragraph.
“Danielle named Vanessa as the children's backup guardian, but she also specified a condition.””
I read the sentence.
If Marcus became unable to provide a safe environment for the children, Vanessa would assume temporary guardianship pending a court review.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Marcus…”
I nodded.
Then Daniel Foster spoke again.
“Mr. Reed, there's a witness statement attached to the affidavit.””
“Whose?””
He turned the page.
I recognized the name immediately.
*Eleanor Price.*
But beneath it was another signature.
One that neither Vanessa nor I expected.
*Tasha Miller.*
The solicitor looked at us.
“Your wife signed a statement confirming that she knew about the attempted financial fraud before Danielle's death.””
I stared at the page.
Then he added:
“And she also acknowledged receiving a payment from the person who arranged the original introduction between her and Danielle.””
I felt cold.
“Who paid her?””
Daniel Foster pointed to the final line.
The name was written clearly.
*Robert Reed.*
My father's name.
I stood so quickly that my chair scraped across the floor.
“That can't be right.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The solicitor remained silent.
I looked at the signature again.
My father.
The man who had held my hand at Danielle's funeral.
The man who had spent the previous evening defending Tasha.
The man who had told me to protect my children.
I picked up my phone.
May you like
I needed to speak to him.
Immediately.
