Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Building
Nobody moved.
The sound of a luggage cart rolling somewhere behind the elevators seemed impossibly loud.
Victoria stared at Richard Brooks as if she had just discovered that the floor beneath her feet was about to disappear.
“You own this hotel?”” she repeated.
Richard didn't answer her.
He was still looking at Marcus.
“I'm waiting.””
Marcus straightened his jacket, struggling to recover the professional smile that had served him so well moments earlier.
“Mr. Brooks, I can explain. There was a disagreement between two guests, and I was attempting to maintain order.””
Richard gestured toward Danielle's cheek.
“Does that look like order to you?””
“Sir, Mrs. Langford reported that your daughter was being aggressive.””
“My daughter says she was slapped. A witness says she recorded the assault. Security cameras cover this entire lobby. What exactly have you done to establish the truth?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Victoria recovered first.
“Mr. Brooks, I'm sure this has all been blown out of proportion. Your daughter was standing in my way, and she spoke to me disrespectfully.””
Richard finally turned toward her.
“Did you strike her?””
Victoria's chin lifted.
“I may have pushed her hand away.””
Danielle looked at her in disbelief.
“You slapped me across the face.””
“Don't exaggerate.””
“I didn't move toward you. I didn't touch your bag. I didn't even know your name until you demanded that everyone listen to you.””
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
“Your father has clearly made you accustomed to getting your way.””
Richard's expression didn't change.
“No. I taught her that she doesn't have to purchase the right to be treated like a human being.””
He looked toward the witness who had recorded the incident.
“Ma'am, would you be willing to show us what you captured?””
The witness nodded immediately.
“Absolutely. My name is Eleanor Price. I was sitting near the reception desk.””
She unlocked her phone and handed it to one of Richard's attorneys.
The video began with Victoria approaching Danielle.
The audio was clear.
People like you shouldn't be in this hotel.
Then came the slap.
The sharp crack echoed from the phone's speaker.
Someone in the crowd whispered, “Oh my God.””
The video continued.
Danielle protecting her baby.
Danielle asking for security footage.
Marcus apologizing to Victoria.
Marcus ordering Danielle to leave.
The final seconds captured him instructing security to stop Eleanor from recording.
When the video ended, Richard handed the phone back.
“Thank you, Ms. Price.””
Eleanor nodded.
“I couldn't believe what I was watching. That poor woman was holding a newborn, and nobody would listen to her.””
Richard's eyes softened.
“You did. That matters.””
He turned to his attorneys.
“Preserve that recording. Make sure the original file and the hotel's footage are secured. No one deletes anything.””
The attorney with the leather case nodded.
“Understood.””
Marcus took a cautious step forward.
“Mr. Brooks, we should discuss this privately.””
Richard looked at him.
“Why? Were you planning to treat my daughter differently if she weren't related to me?””
Marcus froze.
“That's not what I meant.””
“Then explain why you refused to investigate her complaint before ordering her out.””
“I was trying to prevent a scene.””
“A scene?”” Richard repeated.
He gestured toward Grace.
“My daughter came here to sit quietly with her baby. A woman assaulted her. You chose to protect the woman who threatened your business interests instead of the guest who needed your help.””
Victoria interrupted.
“This is ridiculous. My husband is a major investor in several hotel developments. You cannot seriously believe a single slap justifies this kind of treatment.””
Richard turned toward her.
“Your husband's investments don't give you permission to assault people.””
She laughed sharply.
“Do you have any idea who my husband is?””
“No,” Richard replied.
“And at this moment, I don't particularly care.””
A few guests exchanged astonished looks.
Victoria had spent years using her husband's connections to make other people nervous. She expected important men to recognize the Langford name and become accommodating.
Richard appeared unimpressed.
She tried another approach.
“Perhaps your daughter should learn not to provoke people. She could have apologized and avoided all of this.””
Danielle felt her hands tremble.
Richard noticed.
He gently took Grace from her, supporting the baby's head, and handed her to the attorney standing beside him after Danielle nodded that she was comfortable with it.
Then he faced Victoria.
“Repeat that.””
Victoria blinked.
“What?””
“Tell my daughter again that she should apologize to the person who slapped her.””
“I didn't mean—”
“You said it clearly enough the first time.””
Victoria looked around for support.
The guests who had laughed earlier now stared at the marble floor.
Marcus cleared his throat.
“Mr. Brooks, perhaps we could arrange a meeting with Mrs. Langford and resolve this matter discreetly.””
Richard gave him a cold look.
“Discreetly? You were perfectly comfortable humiliating my daughter in front of everyone. Why should the truth become private now that the consequences might reach you?””
Marcus's face reddened.
“I'm sorry, sir.””
“Are you sorry because you failed to protect a guest, or because you just learned whose daughter she is?””
The question hung in the air.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“I apologize for how this situation was handled.””
Danielle shook her head.
“You didn't just handle it badly. You watched me tell you I had been hit, looked at my face, and decided that her money mattered more than my safety.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I understand.””
“No,” Danielle said quietly.
“You understand now because my father walked through those doors.””
Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.
“She shouldn't have to explain that to you.””
He turned toward the hotel's director of operations, who had arrived after receiving an urgent call.
“Please suspend Marcus's authority over guest complaints while an independent investigation is conducted. Preserve all relevant footage and records. I want a written report by tomorrow morning.””
The director nodded.
“Of course, Mr. Brooks.””
Marcus looked stunned.
“Sir, I've worked for this company for eleven years.””
“And today you demonstrated exactly why experience without judgment can be dangerous.””
Victoria's phone began ringing.
She glanced at the screen and rejected the call.
It rang again.
This time, she answered with a strained smile.
“Hello, darling. There's a small misunderstanding at the Grand Sterling.””
A man's voice boomed through the speaker.
“Victoria, what have you done?””
Her smile vanished.
“What are you talking about?””
“Someone just sent me a video. Are you out of your mind?””
Victoria turned away from the crowd.
“It's being exaggerated. The woman was rude, and I—”
“You slapped someone holding a baby?””
“Keep your voice down!””
“I'm at a meeting with people who are already asking questions. Get out of that hotel and don't say another word to anyone.””
The call ended.
Victoria stared at her phone.
Richard had heard enough.
“Mrs. Langford, I suggest you leave the premises peacefully. Our legal team will contact you regarding the incident.””
Victoria's eyes widened.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No. I'm informing you that this matter will be handled through the appropriate channels.””
She turned to Danielle.
“You've ruined my life over one stupid mistake.””
Danielle looked at the woman who had struck her, mocked her, and tried to have her removed while she held a newborn.
“No,” she said.
“You made a choice. Now you don't like the consequences.””
For several seconds, Victoria seemed unable to respond.
Then she snatched her handbag from the velvet chair and stormed toward the entrance.
Nobody stopped her.
Nobody applauded.
The silence followed her all the way through the doors.
Danielle exhaled shakily.
Richard turned to her.
“Let's get you somewhere comfortable.””
“I don't want a special suite, Dad. I just want somewhere quiet to feed Grace.””
His face softened.
“Then that's exactly what you'll have.””
He led her toward a private family lounge.
As they passed the reception desk, Danielle noticed a young employee standing behind the counter. She couldn't have been more than twenty-two. Her eyes were red, and she kept glancing at Marcus.
Danielle stopped.
“Are you okay?””
The employee looked startled.
“I'm fine, ma'am.””
“What's your name?””
“Emily. Emily Carter.””
Danielle noticed the way Emily twisted the edge of her sleeve.
“Did you see what happened?””
Emily glanced toward Marcus.
“I did.””
“Why didn't you say anything?””
The young woman swallowed.
“Because I was told last month that if I ever embarrassed an important guest, I'd lose my job.””
Danielle's stomach tightened.
“Who told you that?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she looked directly at Richard.
“Mr. Reed did. And he wasn't the only one.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“What do you mean, not the only one?””
Emily glanced toward the management corridor.
“There are other complaints. From employees. From guests. People who tried to report things that happened here.””
She lowered her voice.
“And someone has been making sure those complaints disappear.””
Richard stared at her.
“Who?””
Emily took a breath.
“I don't know who gives the final orders. But every time a complaint involves a VIP guest, the records get changed before they reach corporate.””
She looked at Danielle, then at Richard.
“I think you should check the incident reports from the last six months.””
Richard's attorney immediately opened her document case.
“Can you provide those records?””
Emily's hands shook.
“I can tell you where to find them.””
May you like
Then she added something that made Danielle's blood run cold.
“Because this isn't the first time Mrs. Langford has done something like this.””
