Chapter 7

Five years to the day after I walked out that door.

I stood on a stage, speaking to a room full of women. I held up an empty hand.

“I used to carry a notebook,” I told them. “Filled with every lie he told. Every time he hurt me. Every promise he broke. I thought I needed proof to be believed. I thought if I just showed everyone the truth, everything would be fixed.”

I paused.

“I burned it. Because I realized the truth wasn’t in the notebook. It was in me. In my voice. In my survival.”

Afterward, a woman approached me. Quiet. Shaking. She looked at me with eyes I recognized.

“He hasn’t hit me yet,” she whispered. “But he slammed his fist through the wall last week. And looked at me like it was my fault. I’m so afraid. No one believes me. Everyone says he’s the best thing that ever happened to me.”

I took her hands.

“They said that about mine too,” I said. “That’s how it starts. With the wall. With the look. With making you feel like you’re the one who has to be careful. Like you’re the one ruining everything.”

“What do I do?”

“Leave before it becomes physical. Before you have bruises to explain. Before you forget what safety feels like. And remember: he will try to convince everyone you are the problem. That is what they do. They tear you down so no one will believe you when you tell the truth.”

She squeezed my hands. “How did you be brave enough?”

“I wasn’t brave,” I said. “I was terrified. But I realized something: staying was more dangerous than leaving. And one day, you will look back and wonder why you were ever afraid. Because life on the other side… it is beautiful.”

I gave her my number. My lawyer’s name. The address of the shelter.

She walked away stronger than she arrived.

That evening, I stood in my garden as the sun set. Golden light spilled over the flowers. The air smelled of rain and jasmine.

I thought of Daniel. Somewhere far away. Living with what he did. Living with the truth he could never erase.

He had told everyone I was the one who ruined everything.

But here I stood. Free. Loved. Whole.

And him? He had destroyed his own life with his own hands. I didn’t need to lift a finger.

Because lies always collapse. And truth always survives.

I took a deep breath and smiled.

The perfect life I once thought I wanted was a lie.

The imperfect, beautiful, safe life I had built myself?

May you like

That was forever.

And no one could ever take it away.
